  • Art stolen from front yard

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

FALLBROOK — After moving to what they thought was the safe Friendly Village of Fallbrook, Bob and Patti Hahn were fortunate to able to acquire a beautiful life-sized bronze sculpture of a boy and his dog crossing an eight-foot log. They had the sculpture placed on their fenced-in front lawn so their neighbors could enjoy it too. Being dog lovers, the statue was the Hahns’ pride and joy. “People would come by our house just to see the statue,” Patti said. In the late night hours of Friday, December 1, or very early morning hou... Full story

  • Living her dream by working with fresh flowers, plants

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Kris Trejo, owner of End of the Rainbow Gardens, is living her dream. On Mother’s Day 2005 she opened a flower shop right in her own front yard. Because she home-schools her three children, she didn’t want a career that would take her away from the house. That, combined with her lifelong love of gardening and flower arranging, made her choice a natural. The house that was built in the 1920s sits on five acres and belonged to Kris’s father, Mike Matcham. He was a beekeeper in Fallbrook and owned Beebo’s Beesness for 20 year...

  • Giving new life to old Christmas cards

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

An Englishman, Sir Henry Cole, is credited with the idea of the first commercial Christmas card. In 1843 he commissioned London artist John Calcott Horsley to work on the design. The end result was a card that portrayed a party of adults and children drinking and making merry. The card read: “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.” The British Temperance Movement criticized the card and thought the holiday revelers featured on the card were making a little too merry. However, a tradition was born and now cards around th...

  • New program for posting military signs on East Mission fence

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

The San Diego County Department of Public Works, Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green and the Fallbrook Beautification Alliance have joined together in a cooperative venture to provide military families with a maintenance program and a location for posting “Welcome Home” signs when family members return home from deployment. The fence on the north side of East Mission Road just west of I-15 is the property of San Diego County and is now being reserved for the posting of military Welcome Home signs only. All other individuals or gro...

  • Save Our Forest receives augur

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Save Our Forest (SOF), a “branch” of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy (FLC), has received a truly exciting Christmas gift: a Ground Hog two-man power augur, which will make their business of planting trees for the community a lot easier. During a recent conversation with Sheila Walson, Jackie Heyneman said SOF was going great guns with a new grant to plant trees in the community. The only problem was that most of the volunteers are “getting on in years,” finding it harder and harder to dig those holes. The answer to the pro...

  • A big thank you

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

The Rotary Club of Bonsall would like to thank Gordon Stone and the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation for allowing us to use their facilities to host a Christmas party for needy children in the community. Also, thank you to Peggy Butterworth for organizing this event and to Regina Branson and Joe Bill Carter for helping out. A big thank you also goes to Santa’s helper, Henry Mendez. It is through money raised from our fundraisers, such as our annual North County Wine and Food Festival, that we are able to give back t... Full story

  • Opportunity squashed by FUESD

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Janice Shultz states FUESD’s attorney’s opinion on approving a zoning resolution for The New School “would give an implied ownership of the program.” To Ms. Schultz I say, “In your dreams.” FUESD should have jumped on the opportunity to support a successful school in their own backyard. You’d be shouting from the rooftops if one school in your district had the educational success and scores of our school. It’s crystal clear the FUESD doesn’t want The New School to survive because we make them look bad. They don’t want compet...

  • Thank you for remembering troops in Iraq

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Thank you from our troops in Iraq. With the help of many individuals and businesses we sent 50 boxes weighing 897 pounds to Iraq. The goal was to provide Christmas for 510 troops. Because of your generosity we sent 630 boxes. The boxes were filled with nuts, beef jerky, candy, cookies, hot chocolate, chips, tuna and crackers, games, white tube socks, hygiene items, small Christmas trees and decorations for the tents. Thank you for supporting our troops. Special thanks for two racing bicycles and a carrier for a raffle to...

  • Horses need room to move around

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

I am shocked at the seemingly uninformed people who are making judgments on this decision. How many of them own and house horses? How can you house and train 60 horses on such a small place? It’s insane to think this will have no real impact on the whole area. Most of us horse trainers/owners look for open land areas so as not to cram so many horses onto such a small property in a small community. I have trained horses of all breeds, including saddlebreds. They all need to have some room to move around. The comparison to g... Full story

  • People encouraged to express their grief

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Thank you for the announcements in the Village News about the Annual Remembrance Occasion, which was held December 10 at Phyllis Sweeney’s Encouragement Factor. People came and received encouragement to express their grief and to receive needed support as their heartfelt experiences involving loved ones were shared. It is so important to acknowledge people’s grief not only during this Christmas season but every day of the year. My personal experience in sharing was helpful and healing for me. My mother died of liver can...

  • The public saw through attempted bamboozlement

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

It wasn’t the public that was “bamboozled;” the public saw through the lies and attempted bamboozlement. If you believe they didn’t want the Marines out, you have not been listening to the Airport Authority. The Airport Authority in the early fall said they knew that “joint use” wouldn’t work. So why put ballot language out there for the public that implies joint use, unless you’re hoping the Marines go away? The electorate saw through the muddied waters and lies. You can fool some of the people some of the time, and some... Full story

  • The horses will suffer

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

You may wonder why a resident of Modesto would comment on a zoning issue in Bonsall. My interest is based on the fact that I am an ongoing customer of the Claytons and my valuable show horses are specifically the horses that will suffer from the development of such a large facility on such a small piece of land. I breed and keep a small herd and am a lifetime horse owner. I know that 60 stall-bound horses create a large amount of manure and flies, require constant exercising or turnout and use a great deal of water,...

  • Bring the troops home

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Senator Kunichi (Dem.) has declared his candidacy for President of the USA in ’08 and was one of the few with the moral courage to stand against Bush’s war with Iraq from the very beginning. It’s taken three years for the rest of both houses to come around to a similar point of view. The recent US elections demonstrated to those politicians that it was now “safe” to also oppose the war. What a bunch of spineless public servants! What is troubling, however, is that even now, neither of the party’s leadership have the moral c...

Bill Powers will address the Fallbrook Democratic Club at their next meeting. His topic will be the Sunrise Power Link, a $1.3 billion transmission power line project proposed by Sempra Energy to run from near Mexicali across the Anza-Borrego Desert to a termination in north San Diego County. Powers is a registered professional engineer, principal of Powers Engineering, an engineering consulting firm, and the chairperson of the Border Power Plant Working Group, a bi-national advocacy group for environmentally sustainable...

  • RYLA talk brightens Rotary meeting

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

FALLBROOK — Elaine Allyn, past president of the Rotary Club of Fallbrook and an administrator at Fallbrook Union Elementary School District, recently brightened everyone’s day with her narrated video presentation on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). RYLA has its basis in the “Four-Way Test of Rotary” in that it “is the truth,” “is fair to all concerned,” “will build goodwill and better friendship” and “will be beneficial to all concerned.” The program is designed to encourage strong leadership in youth and members ar...

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Elston, also a member of Fallbrook Rotary, had already picked up and delivered several bags full of toys earlier in the day from drop points in businesses around the Village of Fallbrook. Information for Toys f...

  • Nifty nibblers for New Year's festivities

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Ringing in the new year can be as elegant or casual as you want. From a few to 50… the party is all about how you want to entertain. So, let the party you plan reflect your style, your favorites and also, says the practical side of me, the time and assistance available. For many, there is a happy compromise between a fully catered affair and letting someone else do part of the food preparation. After all, you want to enjoy the festivities, too, and who can be the belle of the ball when they’ve been slicing, dicing and pee... Full story

  • Toddler's haircut continues family tradition at barbershop

    Updated Dec 28, 2006

Gary, Dave and Tyler Pedretti all got their hair cut on Saturday, December 16, by Jerry the barber. Gary and Dave have been going to Jerry since 1971, when they first moved to Fallbrook. Four years ago, Dave got married and moved to Upland but still comes down to Fallbrook when he needs a haircut. This time his son Tyler, 14 months, came for a haircut too. Jerry has been a popular barber in Fallbrook since 1968. He has been in the same location on Main and Alvarado for many years, though he is planning to move to a new... Full story
