The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is using 200 goats to clear brush on 120 acres along the mountainside of State Park Road on Palomar Mountain throughout the month of December to reduce the fire threat. The mountainside being treated separates the Bailey Meadows community at the top of the mountain from the La Jolla Indian Reservation at the bottom. The San Diego Association of Governments board approved the allocation of $1 million for habitat management and monitoring implementation activities during Fiscal Year 2006. The December 16 vote also approved the process to allocate the funds, including a call for projects. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved a pest exclusion revenue contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The $1,417,369 contract combines three previously separate contracts and reimburses the county for the nursery stock inspections, seed services, and Sudden Oak Death programs. A 5-0 Board of Supervisors vote December 14 authorized Agricultural Commissioner Kathleen Thuner to sign the necessary documents.
