Nineteen years ago, Sept. 11, 2001, an unexpected attack occurred in America. My desire and motivation for starting the Remembering 9/11 Art Competition was to remember this very tragic day in our history. The attack on 9/11 on American soil took us all by total surprise. The shock of the attack is still hard to comprehend. Residents of New York and Washington D.C. went to work or went about their day as usual. Many of them died that tragic day and so many of our first respond...
Watercolors, acrylics, oils and photography are just some of the art mediums visitors will find at the Fallbrook Art Association, 127 N. Main Ave., Suite B, in Fallbrook. Julie Compton and Ruther Parker, co-directors for The Gallery and co-presidents of Fallbrook Art Association, both have been artists for quite some time. "I've been painting for over 30 years," Parker said. "There's so many facets to it, so many avenues; doors can open up." Compton has been painting for...
Fast forward from Nov. 2, 2019, when the "Take A Seat" art bench auction was held at Vince Ross Village Square, the artists who painted their creations and the buyers who lovingly placed them in their yards said they have found it a challenge to stay healthy and positive. The art bench auction was started to raise funds to support Save Our Forest's environmental education programs through chair Jackie Heyneman and retired Fallbrook elementary school teacher Jean Dooley who,...
The Fallbrook Beautification Alliance is seeking a $5,000 grant from the American Society of Landscape Architects to improve the South Mission Road medians, and the grant application requires two letters of support from community organizations. The Fallbrook Public Utility District board approved one of those letters of support. A 5-0 vote Tuesday, July 28, authorized a letter to be signed by Ken Endter, the FPUD board president. "Our board's been supportive of the efforts...
FALLBROOK – Artists of all kinds understand the value of keeping art available for browsing and buying – especially during these challenging times. Art provides escape and healing, both for artist and viewer. Some artists have found it hard to create while others have found it becomes their own form of traveling to places undiscovered or those being captured from memory. Summer travel is severely limited; the usual "free to go about our business " manner has been replaced by...
Nancy Heins Glaser Special to Village News Save Our Forest's "Take A Seat" project along with the buying patrons' and artists' lives have changed significantly since the amazing art benches were auctioned off November 2019. We wanted to follow the benches during this transition. Artist Leslie Sweetland's, of The Green Art House, created "Take A Seat in The Meadow" which is a vibrantly painted canvas attached as a full sling back which features iconic California poppies dotted...

The new art show was installed June 23 and consists of 44 artworks: paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, collages and assemblages. "The Sun and The Moon" show opens without the benefit of a r...
Christal Gaines-Emory Intern When communities go through hard times, such as the coronavirus pandemic, some people react with fear, others with indignance. Then, there are some who decide to do whatever they can to assist others. One such example is Julie Compton and Nancy Heins-Glaser, both of Fallbrook. They began making homemade masks for friends, family and essential workers all over the country as well as connecting with other potential mask-makers. Heins-Glaser, a retired nurse, worked to connect anyone interested in...

During the days following 9/11, my mother, Joan Roche, a celebrated Fallbrook watercolor artist and board member of the Fallbrook Art Association and incumbent president of National Watercolor Society, was moved to capture the emotion displayed by a New York firefighter kneeling in the 9/11 rubble with his head and helmet in his hands during the aftermath of the tragic collapse of the World Trade Center. The watercolor was unfinished when Joan suddenly died less than one month later. This unfinished watercolor was then sold... Full story
San Diego’s jobless rate is currently at 25% according to the San Diego Association of Governments. That number is expected to grow until the “stay at home” mandate is lifted, and people are able to return to work. To put some perspective on this number, consider that in 2008 because of the Great Recession, the jobless rate was 11.1%, and we thought that was disastrous. Do you recall the fallout in real estate because of an 11.1% jobless rate? I do. Thousands of people lost... Full story

Wendy Hammarstrom Special to Village News One of the fascinating things about Fallbrook I noticed since my first day here is the abundance of wise and creative women of all ages, each with their own story to tell. I recently met Alicia Santacroce, who is in her mid-80s and has the spirit and grace of a young woman. Known by many for her goat cheese with the garlic and herbs she grows, much of her time is taken up with her anthroposophy studies based on the work of Rudolf Stein... Full story

The Dallas Arts District unifies culture and commerce with integrated and exemplary artistic, residential, cultural, educational, recreational, religious and commercial life. The art in public places unite... Full story

While 2019 seemed to pass in the blink of an eye, there were many notable happenings in Fallbrook and Bonsall during those 12 months. Weather-wise, the year started out much the same way as it ended, wet and cold. More streets flooded in February than in recent storms which affected several holiday events. The biggest crime story of the year was the trial of Charles Merritt for the killing of the McStay family. While the trial took place in San Bernardino, the family was from Fallbrook and went missing almost 10 years ago.... Full story

FALLBROOK – David Root will be the featured speaker at the Tuesday, Dec. 10, Fallbrook Garden Club meeting at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane. Root's career as a floral designer was a natural outgrowth of his 11 years as a hair designer. In 1990, his creative instincts spontaneously led him to become one of the hundreds of volunteers, known as "petal pushers," who work on the spectacular floats in Pasadena's Rose Parade. Since that time, his talent and s... Full story
