  • What are you grateful for?

    Updated Nov 2, 2007

As we begin the month of November, a most appropriate question is: What are you grateful for? I, for one, am grateful for the words of Jesus in Luke 6:35. In this verse He speaks of God and says: “He is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked!” I am grateful for these words, because if anyone has been ungrateful, it is me. The list of things I have complained about or taken for granted is pretty much an endless list. It includes, but is not limited to: my air conditioned car; my lovely home; my wonderful wife; this great nation... Full story

  • Why be contemplative?

    Updated Oct 18, 2007

If you want a deeper relationship with the Lord, Contemplative Prayer is a great avenue. My practice for the past nine years basically boils down to sitting in silence for 20 minutes twice a day (called Centering Prayer) and meditating on Scripture (called Lectio Divina or Divine Reading). I can’t even imagine life without this resting in the Lord. My son Chris, when he was young and in big trouble, would nonchalantly say: “Mom, why don’t you go do that prayer for awhile so we can talk?” He knew innately that the prayer...

  • Give church another chance!

    Updated Oct 18, 2007

You may be someone who likes to get up on Sunday mornings and catch the early football games, or go off to a morning round of golf, or maybe just sleep in a little bit later and read the Sunday paper over your cup of coffee. Perhaps you’ve watched your neighbors drive off to church, and you’ve wondered, “Why would anybody want to get up early on a Sunday morning and go to church?” For most of us, it’s because we’ve found something exciting and even unexpected. We were expecting to find that God was mad at us and waiting to...

  • The world thinks a Christian looks like you

    Updated Oct 11, 2007

Anglican worship is full of symbolism…everything we see, say and do is intended to convey a special spiritual meaning. When we stand, sit or kneel; the colors of the vestments, hangings and even the flowers; the lyrics and tempo of the music; etc., etc., etc. are all meant to “say something special”. To us the symbols seem fairly obvious and most people do, in fact, easily figure out what is being “said” without ever being told. Occasionally, however, we have someone ask what something means, and I always ask, “What do...

  • Seek and ye shall find

    Updated Oct 4, 2007

Jesus said, “Seek and ye shall find.” He gave to us a simple and profound principle. We will find what we look for. We become what we believe. Once a person has determined a goal, his or her thoughts and energies begin to work toward that end. This is a building process and it can be positive or it can be negative. There is a parable of an old, wise man sitting in his chair watching the world go by. One day a stranger stopped in the town and he asked the old, wise man, “What kind of people live here in this town?” The man...

  • Celebrating the temporary

    Updated Oct 4, 2007

My friend Rosie works at Fallbrook High. She was sharing about the sudden loss of Coach Hauck and how many lives he impacted for the better. Rosie reflected that death reminds us to celebrate the temporary. Our lives are temporary, every minute counts. Her words made me realize on a deep level that everyday is a special gift. Every experience is a chance to be God’s light in what can be a dark world. Smile, take in the fresh air, be a blessing, treat others with the respect they deserve and have a good belly laugh. One e... Full story

  • Total Victory Moment Trusting in God

    Updated Sep 27, 2007

Early last week I received a call from my friend Porry, one of the most spiritually connected people I know. She sensed God had a message for me in Psalm 37:3-4. Needless to say, I dropped what I was doing and scrambled for my Bible. It goes like this: “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Being the good neurotic I am, I have spent the time ever since memorizing the lines and applying them to my life. I had to...

  • What is Genesis 1 all about?

    Updated Sep 27, 2007

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.“(Gen 1:1 ESV) The Bible begins with God’s creation of the world. But this is no longer universally accepted. Thus Christians see much that must be defended against critics. God created the world ex nihilo in six days. Because of that we are compelled to examine the meaning of our existence, life, and everything else as creatures made for God’s glory. This is important. And by all means, let us pursue it with diligence. But is this really the point of Genesis 1? For...

  • It's all about healing

    Updated Sep 20, 2007

Toothless, with a broken jaw, Gilbert stood before me. Twice a year we visited when he was either coming or going to work as a migrant worker in central California. Sometimes he’d stop by when he needed a jacket or something to eat, but one thing was for sure: his stop always included prayer with one of our pastors where I work as a church secretary. If you looked past the scruffy unkempt hair into those incredible chocolate eyes you could see him as a boy. Strong with squared shoulders. It always made me wonder what had b... Full story

  • What is worship?

    Updated Sep 20, 2007

Once a week, and on special days, Christian believers set aside time to gather for worship of the Triune God. Christian worship takes different forms and expresses itself in different ways. But, what is at the heart of Christian worship? What is a Godly attitude toward Christian worship? Christian worship comes from faith in Christ Christian worship is an expression of Christian faith. It is a fruit of faith. It is the believer’s response to God’s love shown them in Jesus Christ. By grace the Holy Spirit plants personal fai...

  • Pardon my indiscretion

    Updated Sep 13, 2007

Hello. Have you ever been in trouble? Have you ever wronged someone, whether it be your spouse, your boss, your parents, maybe a close personal friend? Maybe you didn’t even know that you wronged them. But nonetheless, they were angry with you over something you supposedly did. Have you ever asked forgiveness from that person? What was the response? Were you forgiven or not? This is the subject we will talk about today. It is my opinion that there is far too much un-forgiveness in our society, today. When someone wrongs us w... Full story

  • Senses make sense

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

Once upon a time, in the Land of Disbelief, came a third argument believers are called to defend: “The reliability of sense perception.” Those opposed to this ideal basically believe they cannot really trust causal relationships (cause and effect) to explain certain aspects of reality (such as the existence of God) because perceptions can’t be trusted. What hogwash! And here’s why… In this Land of Disbelief there lived a misled fellow by name of David Hume. Hume argued that we cannot determine precisely a cause of a particu...

  • God, greatness and the believer

    Updated Sep 7, 2007

“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.” Psalm 145:3 It is a simple enough statement to make: God is great. Scripture is filled with His greatness. Greatness is part of His character, part of His Person, part and parcel of Who and What He is. He can do nothing apart from greatness, for it is His fingerprint, and all He does is alive with it. But to define greatness in such a short space is difficult, so I will try to define greatness by considering what it is not: namely, mediocrity, whi... Full story

  • Quieting the rage in your life

    Updated Aug 31, 2007

“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” Philippians 4:5 I read a statistic once that said it takes a person, on average, 11 seconds to become physically agitated while waiting for the elevator. That’s not very long considering it probably takes five seconds just to push the elevator button and look up to see if the arrow light is on. Not only do we get upset, we blame anything and everyone for our ill-temper. We blame the guy driving 55 in the fast lane, the lady with 12 items in the 10-items-or-less lane... Full story

  • How to get the most of our church service

    Updated Aug 28, 2007

We desire to be part of an exciting church. To have a church that meets the needs of everyone involved is important and possible. It involves working to add several principles. • Worship - is to glorify Jesus who transforms us. It is to give “Worth” to the Godhead. Col. 3:17 says, “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (NIV) • Prayerful Attitude - must be maintained and taught from childhood. In Matt 21:13, Jesus says, “It is writ...

  • Everything for Him alone

    Updated Aug 28, 2007

As I write this, the temperature has spiked to 122 degrees and I am overcome by the greatness of God I see before me. I’m dockside on the Colorado River, where the majestic volcanic mountains tower over the rushing green river as carp flip joyfully toward the sun and ski boats rumble by with their bronzed occupants. I am reading Charles de Foucauld (a one-time rebellious soul): “May our only treasure be God, may our heart belong totally to God, everything in God, everything for God… for him alone.” Then I flip to my next wr... Full story

  • The Message of the Kingdom, Matthew 5-7

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

When Jesus saw the crowds he went up on a hillside. The people who wanted to be disciples gathered around him. And he sat down (as teachers do) and he began to teach them. He said: “God bless you who are spiritual zeroes. Who are absolutely broke…beggars. The kingdom of heaven is open to you. God bless you who are heartbroken. You will know the comfort of God. God bless you who are powerless. In God’s kingdom you’re going to win everything. The whole wide earth will be yours. Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty...

  • Apologetics 101

    Updated Aug 16, 2007

Yesterday, as I worked out with Roy, my fitness trainer, we started out for a walk, which to me at first glance, looked impossible. Sure enough, my ego ruptured as I stopped halfway up the hill, sucking air like a fish out of water. Oh, how I wish I could have slid unnoticed down a storm drain out to sea. Being the perfect guide, Roy reminded me that we were going at my pace and this glitch was just something we were working on improving. Problem solved. As we advance on the spiritual journey our road ahead is covered with gl...
