  • Daily Thought: Remembering Psalm 8

    Updated Jul 29, 2010

The closer you live to God, the smaller everything else appears. -Richard Warren “God is Good and God is Great” is the beginning of a common prayer for grace at meals… “and we thank Him for this food.” A simple prayer with a simple thought, which, as I grow closer to God, I feel the depth and breadth of its meaning in increasingly developing ways. “God is Good and God is Great” echoes in my ears as I live closer to God. The closer I get to God the more depth of life I feel and know, the less “surface” is my thinking, the les... Full story

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” --Proverbs 27:6 Wounds from a friend can come about several ways. The friend can be trying to show us something that we are blind to, trying to protect us, but may have to wound us to get our attention. It brings to mind the old gag of hitting someone with a 2 x 4 across the forehead to get their attention. When that happens it is well to consider what they are trying to say to us, knowing that a faithful friend has our best interest at heart. Or... Full story

“Ointment and perfume delight the heart, and the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.” -Proverbs 27:9 In other words, the heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. When we sit down to talk to a real friend, during that process of communication, we reveal ourselves to one another. We say what we really think and make ourselves vulnerable to each another. The intimate relationship of true friends requires an open dialogue and trust. When we ask for the advice from a friend, we tru...

  • Life Coach: Wisdom from the Proverbs

    Updated Jul 1, 2010

“The talk of fools is a rod for their backs, but the words of the wise keep them out of trouble.” --Proverbs 14:3 Foolish talk can end up hurting the fool who is doing the talking. It can be a rod or an instrument that beats its own foolish self. Another translation calls this rod a rod of pride. Pride, as it has been said, goes before a fall. Pride can bring a beating. It is far better to stay out of pride and be humble than to be humiliated by our own mouth. On the other hand we see that the words of the wise keep them out...

  • Life Coach: Wisdom from the Proverbs

    Updated Jun 24, 2010

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion.” –Proverbs 8:12 At a time when young people are graduating and making choices for their futures, I am reminded that all of us daily make choices that will affect our futures. What wisdom or advice would we give to a high school graduate who is about to go off to college or launch out in some other endeavor? We would say to them, “Make good choices. Don’t go along with the crowd and think something is all right to do just because ‘everyone is doing... Full story

We cannot abandon life because of its storms. The strongest trees are not found sheltered in the safety of the forest, ather they are in the open spaces -- bent and twisted by the winds of all seasons. -Tammy Felton I remember walking the Oregon coast as a boy and being amazed at the twisted, windblown trees that marked the summit of the hills overlooking the rocky shore. Those trees saw wind and rain and cold and even snow at times. They were molded by the storms that flowed steady off the endless ocean, only to be... Full story

    Updated Jun 10, 2010

“Give to us clear vision that we may know where to stand and what to stand for -- because unless we stand for something, we shall fall for anything.” -Peter Marshall What a great prayer for us to pray in our quiet times alone with God. So often we live lives more like a pinball in a machine, than an arrow in flight. We bounce off the challenges of life and get re-launched by a flipper… taking brief advantage of the opportunities that happen our way, only to roll progressively down the board to end up falling into the inevi... Full story

  • Wisdom from the Proverbs - Life Coach

    Updated Jun 3, 2010

“A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” -Proverbs 17:22 In this proverb we see that it is talking about the person on the inside, not just the outward appearance. So easily we can put on a smile and act happy, but that is not the same as a merry heart. The merry heart or broken spirit is what is truly on the inside of a person. When we have a merry heart, it does good like medicine and conversely a broken heart or spirit dries the bones, or in other words, removes the moisture that kee...
