The Fallbrook Pregnancy Resource Center’s (FPRC) annual fundraising banquet was a great success. The Fellowship Center of Zion Lutheran Church was filled with people enjoying a delicious meal prepared by the Knights of Columbus on Jan. 23. A silent auction with many attractive items added to the funding needed to continue the Resource Center’s helpful mission for the coming year. Laughter filled the room as Mike Williams’ very funny monologue entertained the group as the main feature of the evening’s program. The winner... Full story

  • A bird does not sing because it has an answer; it sings because it has a song

    Updated Feb 11, 2010

The song, “Go Tell it on the Mountain” is a favorite hymn of mine. I don’t particularly like the music or the sing ability of it, as much as I appreciate its simplicity. It doesn’t make a heavy or complicated doctrinal claim; it doesn’t proclaim a difficult truth. It simply sings the song, which is the story-telling of the birth of a Savior. It doesn’t proclaim Jesus as the answer. It simply names Him as the Messiah. It simply points to the beginning of a blessed opportunity. “Go Tell it on the Mountain, that Jesus Christ... Full story

  • "Death and Life are in the power of the tongue" - Proverbs 18:21

    Updated Feb 11, 2010

We have all experienced other people’s words spoken to us that have affected us either for the good or for the bad. And we have spoken words to others that have resulted in blessing them or hurting them. But do we fully realize how our words affect us when we speak them? What we say affects the one who is speaking as well as others who hear those words. Death and life is in the power of the tongue. How do we change what we speak? It has been said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, in other words, what we...

  • We were dead, but are now alive

    Updated Feb 4, 2010

In Ephesians 2, Paul explained how God gave the Church new life: “And you did he make alive, when ye were dead through your trespasses and sins […] even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace have ye been saved.” Paul gives a glimpse of life for believers before they knew Christ in Ephesians 2:1 – we were “dead through our trespasses and sins.” Obviously, we were not physically dead. This death left us powerless, unable to change our circumstances, unresponsive and void of lif... Full story

While hundreds of thousands of children will be directly affected by the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti, children everywhere will experience distress as they hear of people who have suffered and watch displaced people on TV. Parents and other adults can take steps to help children cope with their fears and live with hope. Here are 10 suggestions. 1. Allow children to express their concerns through art work and play. 2. Pray with children for those affected by the earthquake. 3. Limit the amount of television coverage... Full story

  • Help children learn about Jesus Christ

    Updated Jan 21, 2010

Jesus loves the little children; every one is precious to The One. The disciples over time became increasingly protective of Jesus as the crowds grew and people became more aggressive to get close to Him. I suppose it’s no surprise that when the children were brought to Jesus for a blessing, (Matthew 19:13-15) that the disciples attempted to keep them back. Jesus invited them nonetheless. Jesus never held them back… from anything. God wants to account for every child under heaven. God wants our commitment to help bring the...

  • The new man

    Updated Jan 21, 2010

There was once a market where everyone would go to sell their wares. One particular old farmer had brought a flock of quails to sell, and kept them from flying by tying a string to each of their legs, and connected the string to a ring that was staked in the ground. These birds would walk around the stake in a monotonous manner, circling the stake for hours. A particular merchant, who had a love for animals, saw the poor birds and asked to buy the entire flock of quail. After the merchant bought the quail, he asked the... Full story

  • Your behavior should match what you believe

    Updated Jan 14, 2010

In Ephesians 5, Paul stated that our behavior should match what Christians believe because we have been delivered. If we have belief, but our behavior does not match it, we will cause harm and confusion to those who are trying to embrace the kingdom of God. Our old nature has been conquered through the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we are now freed from the bondage of sin. Because of this, we should now be “imitators of God” now that we have been set free (Eph. 5:1-2). The Greek word for imitator lit...

  • Religion and control in the People's Republic of China

    Updated Dec 31, 2009

The wind flowed through my hair as I stood at the front of the boat, arms stretched out, marveling at the natural beauty of the Three Gorges as we approached it. A herd of middle-aged Chinese men anxiously pushed their way through the crowd behind me; with cameras clutched in hand, each was eager to have a photo in front of China’s most famous picturesque landmark. Each of them posed in a similar fashion: serious-faced, proud posture, upright, arms pinned to their sides, l... Full story

  • Listen for God's voice during the Christmas season

    Updated Dec 24, 2009

“In the very midst of our busy preparations for the celebration of Christ’s birth in ancient Bethlehem, Christ is reborn in the Bethlehems of our homes and daily lives. Take time, slow down, be still, and be awake to the Divine Mystery that looks so common and so ordinary, yet is wondrously present.’ -Edward Hays It seems that secular expectations of decorating, gift-giving, entertaining, and attendance has attempted to rob this 2009 season of Christmas of the sense of Peace and Shalom it intends. Shifting cultural expec...

  • Are you expecting the worst to happen? Are you ready to ask for His help?

    Updated Dec 17, 2009

“Worry is like a rocking chair: It gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.” – Erma Bombeck It is almost as if our lives are not complicated enough…we want to worry about things that have not yet happened and even are rather unlikely to ever happen. Nevertheless, we bother ourselves with a whole string of what-ifs to busy our minds with what some call “being ready for the worst.” Of course we would all rather respond than react to emergent situations, but what if we trusted God to provide the appropriate r... Full story
