  • Who are you?

    Updated Aug 10, 2007

After being arrested for having “church” and teaching about Jesus, then being miraculously released, then rearrested, Peter and the Apostles were forced to stand in front of the High Priest for questioning. After being questioned, Peter replied, “We must obey Jesus.” In his discourse, Peter referred to Jesus as “Prince and Savior” (Acts 5:27). In the Bible, followers of Christ have used many different names to describe Jesus, including: Lord and Christ, Holy and Righteous One, the Author of Life, Anointed One, Son of Man,...

  • Embracing His faith

    Updated Aug 10, 2007

In defending our Christian faith, I think it’s important to know who we are in Christ and what it means that we embrace His faith so we can share the good news properly. Basically, really… when you think about it… it all boils down to love. What did Jesus say? The greatest of these is what? LOVE. And why is that important? For one thing, Jesus draws us into community (with all our shortcomings) so we can build each other up and keep his light in the foreground of our lives through shared experiences. A few weeks ago, my fr...

  • Having a heart for Africa

    Updated Aug 2, 2007

Youth and adults from Christ The King recently went on a “Heart for Africa” short-term mission trip to Kenya. “Heart for Africa” is a faith-based humanitarian aid organization that is working to provide real solutions to the issues plaguing Africa, including hunger, orphans, poverty and education. Following is a brief account of our experience there, an experience we believe God will continue to use in our lives and in the lives of those we met in Africa. On July 9 fifty-two Christians from different states, differe...

  • Baptism to rebirth

    Updated Aug 2, 2007

Vacationing this past week on the steamy Colorado River where desert temperatures topped off at 124 degrees, I found myself pondering the meaning of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River. Where our family’s vacation home is situated at the foot of Parker Dam, the water is drawn from the bottom of Lake Havasu, leaving it shockingly cold to dive into when you’ve been roasting in the inferno-like conditions. Standing perched to dive in, I would look deeply into the darkness of the rushing emerald river teeming with life. My body...

  • Cross-filled living?

    Updated Jul 19, 2007

The other night, I rented a video. I don’t remember the name of the movie, but one scene in particular struck me. The main character, who was having Job-like experiences, losing everyone and everything in his life, ended up in church. The preacher was dynamic and the crowd loved every word. The problem was that he was preaching a message of prosperity. He was telling the folks they had nothing to worry about because God was about to intervene in their lives and make them prosper. The audience was made up of poor folks who s...

  • So where did you get that conscience?

    Updated Jul 19, 2007

I don’t know about you, but I have been blessed (or cursed) with a conscience that works overtime. “Why on earth did I say this or that?” “How could I have ignored that opportunity to help so-and-so?” “Why does he get on my nerves and I react like a kid?” “I know I should have acted differently.” And all that in one day! But how do we know when we’ve crossed the line on a moral issue? What is it about our conscience that yaps at us when we do something wrong? Many believe that God’s laws are written in our hearts. Many theo...

  • Spiritual fitness

    Updated Jul 12, 2007

Recently, I’ve been so blessed to be working out with a wonderful fitness trainer. (Thanks, Roy!) He instills confidence in my fitness program because he is a knowledgeable guide to keep me on track. So when I wanted to exercise my Christian understanding for this column, I had to find some real experts in the field of apologetics who make it their business to defend faith. Lee Strobel, a savvy Chicago Tribune reporter, is one such expert. Lee traveled the US for 21 months interviewing thirteen leading scholars and a...

  • 'Why?'

    Updated Jul 12, 2007

A professor of philosophy had given his students an examination. The last question simply read: “Why?” The professor passed only two of his students. One had written, “Why not?” and the other answered, “Because.” Some of life’s most profound questions are put in the single word “Why?” Why must people suffer? Why can’t I be like everyone else? Why do I have to have this disease? Why am I poor and unlucky? Why did my mother have to die? Why am I a victim of floods? Why is my son missing in action? Why can’t we have a chi... Full story

  • Where they're always glad you came

    Updated Jul 5, 2007

Over the years I’ve noticed something fairly common in churches: most operate with a slogan that “Everyone is Welcome.” But oddly enough, most outsiders don’t really feel welcome when they go. One of the all-time most popular television series was “Cheers.” Set in an unspectacular sports bar in Boston, it featured a lineup of characters who were all a few ticks off center, nearly drove each other crazy, but hung together anyway out of friendship and necessity. Like the theme song said: “Where everybody knows your name, and th...

  • Of angels and wonders

    Updated Jul 5, 2007

At times we ask ourselves what we truly believe. Does God truly hear our prayers? Does he send comfort in our time of need? I was questioning all of the above as my life irreversibly changed becoming a widow and sole support of my little seven-year-old son who looked up to me for security when my safety net was also abruptly taken away. At the time we lived on nearly two acres butted up against a ravine. The entire westerly vista of our house was glass which made it a haven for sunsets but left me feeling vulnerable and sleep... Full story

  • Blessed by God in many ways

    Updated Jun 28, 2007

The Dead Sea Scrolls will be on display in San Diego from June 29-December 31, 2007. They are so named because of their discovery in caves near the Dead Sea. These amazing Scrolls provide a unique look into the ancient world and are well worth a trip to the San Diego Natural History Museum. Leaving the Scrolls aside, focus for a moment on the Dead Sea, for which they are named. The Jordan River flows into the Sea of Galilee and then out, eventually making its way into the Dead Sea, where it can go no further. The Dead Sea and...

  • So what's so scintillating about the scrolls?

    Updated Jun 28, 2007

As part of my research for this apologetics column, I have been digging (pardon the pun) for archeological finds to defend Christian faith. So the Dead Sea Scrolls have peaked my interest. They substantiate a link from our Christian faith to a tangible ancient belief system embedded in the ancient scrolls. The exhibition on display in Balboa Park from June 29-Dec 31, is the largest, longest, and most comprehensive ever assembled in any country. Spanning two floors and 12,000 square feet, 27 Dead Sea Scrolls—Ten exhibited f... Full story

  • Jumping out of airplanes

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

My good friend Mark received a rather unique gift from his wife for his birthday a few years ago. I truly believe she had no ulterior motive (in her heart, she alone knows!), but the gift was for one “skydive!” He loved it and now he’s hooked and has done it a few more times. Now, for the jump, he was lashed to a professional skydiver, but Mark relates that the experience was absolutely awesome! Maybe I’m jealous; then again, maybe I’m still in my right mind! I would really rather be sick when I die. Mark’s “falling do...

  • Seeing light in darkness

    Updated Jun 21, 2007

Working in a church, sometimes it’s hard to see light in the midst of darkness as we witness great losses, hear the heart-wrenching cries of those left behind. I remember grappling with my own despair over the loss of my husband during a silent reflection period at a retreat I was attending. I kept repeating, “Why, Lord, why?” As I closed my eyes praying intently for an answer, in my mind’s eye I could see my husband, Terry, off in the distance standing 50 feet away surrounded by pure white. I quickly opened my eyes and shook...

  • Growing up: taking the plunge

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

When do you stop being a kid? For many of us, never. When do you start being an adult? That’s a trickier question. There are dozens of little milestones that mark your physical and emotional development. Was there a time in your life you felt yourself stepping across that line? When you turned 21 or got your driver’s license or graduated from school or got a full-time job or joined the Marines or got married and left home? And now you’re grown up. Last week at our church it was Confirmation Sunday. Thirty middle-school teens...

  • How influential was Jesus?

    Updated Jun 7, 2007

In their book “What if Jesus Had Never Been Born?” D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe attempt to answer this question, at least partially. They begin with the assumption that the church – the body of Christ – is Jesus’ primary legacy to the world. Then they examine what has happened in history that displays the influence of the church. Here are a few highlights they cite: • Hospitals, which essentially began during the Middle Ages. • Universities, which also began during the Middle Ages. In addition, most of the world’s g... Full story
