The church family, in turn, commits to pray for their wisdom, blessing, and the ultimate faith of that child. • The Bible: sacred endeavor

    Updated May 10, 2007

Last week we discussed the Bible as a historical document, but how about the Bible’s experiential qualities? To that end, may I suggest the ancient practice of Lectio Divina, or Divine Reading. There are four steps that characterize Lectio Divina: Read a Bible passage slowly several times. Reflect on the passage thinking how to apply it to one’s own life. Respond to the reading by opening your heart and beginning a conversation with God. Then listen to God, yep…listen. This will free you from your own thoughts. In this way,... Full story

  • "Moving on without getting lost"

    Updated May 10, 2007

We are like ships that leave familiar harbors to explore new lands, new horizons, and new opportunities. But like ships, we face dangers of getting lost in storms at sea or simply losing touch with where we came from. Dangers lurk at the edge. Each of us has had a beginning. As children we are kept close to home by parental direction. When raised with caution, stability, and security, we keep close to those who gave us life and a continuing support system. However, we each have in us Adam’s wayward seed. Until we come of a... Full story

  • PRAYER: Celebrating Something Very Right!

    Updated Apr 26, 2007

Have you noticed how much easier it can be to criticize something wrong than to stand for something right? Take for instance…Prayer! Christians have been appalled in recent decades to watch prayer ripped from the fabric of our country. First it was pulled from classrooms and then graduation ceremonies. Students had to fight to maintain their legal right to organize themselves for prayer even on their own time. Today, prayer has largely disappeared from civic events and activities. Christians have pointed out that to deny p...

  • Historical Jesus

    Updated Apr 26, 2007

I have always had an experiential understanding of God. I can attest to God’s power and love in my life, felt deep within my soul. But to explain this to a non-believer in terms both of us could grasp? That seemed very daunting until I started reading, “Evidence That Demands a Verdict” by Josh McDowell. Let’s face it, I’m not a theologian. The material was hard to wrap myself around at first, but after much prayer, a practical reason for needing concrete information to defend our Christian faith began to unfold. Check out the...

  • Christ is risen indeed!

    Updated Apr 19, 2007

Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! It has now been about two weeks since Christians celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The day we call Easter. A few months ago, we celebrated Christmas; the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. About two weeks after Christmas, most people begin to put away their Christmas decorations. For some reason, our celebration of Easter does not include nearly the same amount of decorations and other items indicative of the season. But, whatever Easter decorations we do...

  • Peter's hope

    Updated Apr 19, 2007

During this post-Easter season, I can’t help but wonder how Peter felt after he betrayed Jesus. What was it like for Peter to lock eyes with Jesus across that courtyard as he blew off their relationship to complete strangers? According to scripture accounts, Peter walked away and wept bitterly. Peter had witnessed people being healed by Jesus’ touch, had seen him bringing the dead back to life. Peter even proclaimed Jesus as God in front of all their friends. But what did Peter say under the heat of the moment when Jesus was...

  • Do you have a letter of blessing from your father?

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

If you’re like me, you don’t; but if you did, there would be only one word to describe it. Priceless. There’s a new ministry emerging which is capturing the hearts of fathers throughout the country. It’s called Letters From Dad. Men, it will change your life! (Dr. Ken Canfield, National Center for Fathering). Dr. Gene Getz, author of The Measures of a Man says, “Our heavenly Father has written a personal love letter called The Bible. Letters From Dad’follows a solid Biblical model as it teaches men how to write words of fa...

  • So, How Did Peter Know?

    Updated Apr 12, 2007

The Easter baskets are back up in the garage, you’re officially sick of egg salad, and your permission to eat too much chocolate has come to an abrupt halt. So, what did Easter really mean to you and me? After my first article introducing this new section of the Village News, I have pondered and prayed a great deal about the direction of this section of the paper. What kept creeping into my mind was Peter’s answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?” And of course, Peter’s lightning quick response, “You are the Son o...

  • "The Easter Train"

    Updated Apr 5, 2007

Once there was a spider who lived in a tree. The webs he wove were the strongest, the glossiest, the stickiest webs that a spider could ever construct. Many bugs and beetles, many ants and other insects found themselves caught, quick-dried and stored away in his loaded pantry. One thing alone troubled his tranquil existence. Close to his tree there ran a railroad track, and each morning when the train whooshed by, his whole house shuddered and shook. Sometimes he even lost a few of the tasty tidbits he had intended for a...
