Wow! It’s always a privilege to be a part of Jesus’ people here in Fallbrook! As God’s people we can never forget our call to love all of our neighbors here in the name of Christ. I love how Kay Kupka describes her own honest response to this call of Jesus. She says: “I’ve been thinking about the story of the Good Samaritan and how Jesus uses it to teach us about loving our neighbor. I don’t know about your neighborhood, but in mine folks aren’t very friendly. Well, maybe that’s not quite true. Everyone waves and smiles, but...
Here are a few observations to consider: • Discoveries in astronomy have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that the universe did, in fact, have a beginning. There was a single moment of creation. • Advances in molecular biology have revealed vast amounts of information encoded in each and every living cell, and molecular biologists have discovered thousands upon thousands of exquisitely designed machines at the molecular level. Information requires intelligence and design requires a designer. • Biochemists and mathe...

When do you stop being a kid? For many of us, never. When do you start being an adult? That’s a trickier question. There are dozens of little milestones that mark your physical and emotional development. Was there a time in your life you felt yourself stepping across that line? When you turned 21 or got your driver’s license or graduated from school or got a full-time job or joined the Marines or got married and left home? And now you’re grown up. Last week at our church it was Confirmation Sunday. Thirty middle-school teens...
In their book “What if Jesus Had Never Been Born?” D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe attempt to answer this question, at least partially. They begin with the assumption that the church – the body of Christ – is Jesus’ primary legacy to the world. Then they examine what has happened in history that displays the influence of the church. Here are a few highlights they cite: • Hospitals, which essentially began during the Middle Ages. • Universities, which also began during the Middle Ages. In addition, most of the world’s g... It must have been a confusing as well as a convicting moment for the disciples when Jesus removed his outer cloak and began washing their feet. (John 13:4-5). They had gathered to celebrate the Passover. Only moments after rebuking the disciples for arguing about who among them would be the greatest (Luke 22: 24-27), Jesus quietly stood up, removed his outer garment, wrapped a towel around his waist, filled a basin with water and began, one by one, to wash their feet. This gesture must have shocked the disciples, because foot...

For Mother’s Day I coerced my 19-year-old son, Chris, into an overnighter in Orange County. Once he turned 19, between college, work and his active social life, he has become a ghost in our home. As part of our excursion, we were hitting Pep Boys looking to for a synthetic oil called “Royal Purple” for his much beloved 240SX. Because of its popularity store after store were out of it, and time after time, I sat in the car seeing that grimace on his face become more intense in disappointment. Why do I bring this up with you?...
We, as believers, have to deal with problems of every sort – at work, school, in our neighborhood, in civic organizations, in our churches. It would be much easier for us to deal with problems if we could keep our focus on who we are and to whom we belong. The Word of God gives us very positive guidelines for the way we should act and react. In light of our relationship with Christ, there are critical areas which each of us face. As Christians we live in a society made up of communities of people living, working, playing a...

Although I’ve always believed in God, my spiritual journey began as I watched my husband, Terry, draw his last breath. After seven days in intensive care, he took on an ashen color I can only describe as ghastly. Early that Saturday morning, I frantically circled his bed, rubbing his feet and hands, trying to recover circulation in his darkened limbs. Suddenly, alarms rang, and I was shoved out of the room as a medical team began to resuscitate him. I looked up into the neon lights and prayed a desperate prayer. “Lord, if...
Scholars have described the present time as the Post-Christian Era. If they are looking at Europe, it’s pretty easy to see how they could reach that conclusion. In a recent presentation to the Fallbrook Ministerial Association, Chuck Boatman, Professor of Biblical Studies at Hope International University in Fullerton, California, stated that on any given Sunday, “There are more people in church on Sunday in communist China than in all of Western Europe.” I can even see how they could reach that conclusion when refer...

Understanding the Bible as a unique historical document through apologetic study enables us to defend our faith in concrete ways. Evidence That Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell covers the historical spectrum: “The Bible was written over a 1500-year span, by over 40 authors from every walk of life: Moses, a political leader, trained in the universities of Egypt; Peter, a fisherman; Amos, a herdsman; Joshua, a military general; Nehemiah, a cupbearer; Daniel, a prime minister, Luke, a doctor; Solomon, a king; Matthew, a tax c...
I sat down, put my feet up and turned on the tube so I could relax and watch the news. There was a French nun talking about her healing from Parkinson’s. The next morning I came upon an article about the canonization process of Pope John Paul II (“by canonizing some of the faithful, i.e., by solemnly proclaiming that they practiced heroic virtue and lived in fidelity to God’s grace, the Church recognizes the power of the Spirit of holiness within and sustains the hope of believers by proposing the saints to them as model...
