Celebrations were recently held at grocery/produce stores and specialty shops across the southwest of the U.S. in honor of a chile – the world famous Hatch chile. The spicy food store Chile Hedz, located in Old Town Temecula, was among the celebrants as it hosted a Hatch Chile Festival Sept. 17-18. These special chiles are grown in the valley around a town called (surprise!) Hatch, a small village in southeastern New Mexico located between Las Cruces and Truth or C...

There is some question whether the band Toto took its name from Dorothy's dog in The Wizard of Oz or from the Latin word for entirety. The Toto concert Sept. 10 at Pala Casino's Palomar Starlight Theater weighs the belief toward the concept of entirety. Toto singer and guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboardists David Paich and Steve Porcaro have been with the band since Toto was formed in 1977. The current band also includes lead vocalist Joseph Williams, drummer Shannon Forest, and bassist Leland Sklar. The touring...
While the main attraction to the Fallbrook Jazz and Wine Festival on Sept. 16 was the music, Fallbrook restaurants and wineries did a fantastic job representing themselves as well. Guests were able to enjoy food from all over North County, but for those in the VIP area, it was hard to pull away from the delicious food prepared by The Veranda, Grand Tradition’s own restaurant. As VIP guests entered the Beverly Mansion, they were given a spread of beautiful appetizers, such a... Full story

Ian Murdock Special to the Village News When I first read the synopsis of the film Hell or High Water – having not even seen the previews – I thought to myself, this looks like a goldmine. In anticipation of seeing it, I read a couple of reviews from big national newspapers. Both ranked it a one hundred – and I can't recall seeing that happen before, or very often. I also noted that it was the same writer as Sicario – which arguably ranks as one of the finest drug cartel...
A true potluck is totally unplanned and can be an adventure in eating. I remember one grange potluck that consisted of several dishes of beans of various kinds and there was one Daughters of Norway (DON) potluck that was mostly desserts, but those were exceptions. In my experience, potlucks are usually delicious meals. It is amazing how well a potluck can turn out, especially if there is a theme to it. The DON potluck lunches usually feature several Scandinavian dishes but als... Full story

With schools back in session, some parents may be looking for tips on filling their children's lunch boxes, but students aren't the only ones who take lunch with them when they leave home in the morning. I have been making my own lunch since I started first grade (that's what happens when you are the sixth of 10 kids and Mom gets tired of making lunches). My lunches weren't very healthy back then (sandwich, chips and cookies), and pre-packaged lunch items later on weren't much... Full story
Ian Murdock Special to The Village News In the post Oscar months, it is, normally, exceedingly challenging to find quality dramas - 2016 has been no exception. Fortunately, a few weeks ago I saw a preview for a film that would qualify - part of that standard, truth be told, includes no regrets for having paid full theater prices. Some of the great movies ever made tell "seemingly simple" life stories. Of course, what puts these mundane stories on a revered level, is the...

Dining choices at the last Fallbrook Summer Nights event on Aug. 19 included pulled pork sandwiches, Maine lobster and personal size pizzas, but the delightful aroma of hamburgers and hot dogs cooking on a grill attracted just as many customers to the Veterans of Foreign War’s (VFW) food stand. An appealing meal for families as well as for a group from the sheriff department's Volunteer Senior Patrol, Fallbrook VFW Post 1924 also offered cheeseburgers (“with American che...
