Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News It doesn’t matter what you celebrate in December. You might wish to celebrate the National Fruitcake Month, or Hanukkah, even the winter solstice. I like Humbug Day, National Hamburger Day, Twelfth Night, and National Twins Day. Some folks have a good time during Kwanzaa but, in my house, it’s called plain ol’ Christmas. And I love it. Every little thing about it. I love the lights, the tree, the carols, especially writing Christmas cards to friends; but mostly, I love t... Full story
Thank you to Mr. Lewis for his response to Mr. Terrell. I had a retort in mind, but couldn't muster up the energy or the proper attitude to respond. Mr. Lewis said all the right things as far as I am concerned and I would venture to say many others in the community would agree. President Trump did indeed keep promises. I recall when I complained about gas prices (early on) and was reprimanded for indicating that the Biden administration was responsible, it was just the beginning. The Biden group has put this country in so... Full story
Thank you all for supporting the Fallbrook Chorales Christmas gift to the community Saturday, Dec. 11. We had such a good time singing, and to see all the smiling faces in the audience made it perfect. Again, thank you, and we look forward to seeing you for our "Fallbrook Joe" fundraiser on Saturday, April 2., and our Spring Concert on Saturday, May 21. The Fallbrook Chorale is a not-for-profit organization. Ann Frederick Fallbrook Chorale... Full story
Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District I’m focused on reflection and gratitude this holiday season. As I reflect on the changes brought in 2020 and 2021, there’s a lot I’ve missed in light of our new normal. I’ve missed going out to our different communities in District 5 and interacting with all of our wonderful constituents. While we’ve returned to some normal activites, it’s still not feeling entirely the same. I am grateful, because this year we’ve been able to hold some revitalization meetings in person. I've attended nume... Full story
Julie Reeder Publisher Christmas is a special time in our culture when we connect as a family and friends. We spread love and good cheer and catch up on each other's lives. We give gifts to each other after the model of Christ's birth and the gift of salvation to everyone. But family has always been complicated. Everyone has their own individual beliefs. Last year, Christmas was pretty much canceled due to COVID-19 and this year, with the emergence of the omicron variant, we are being urged to be very careful. If we were in... Full story
I read with interest John H. Terrell's commentary in the opinion section on Dec. 16. Since a fetus is a living thing, when does it stop being "no one else?" When it is born? When it is given a name? When it is weaned? When it is no longer dependent on adults for survival? These are questions people have been asking and answering in different ways since the beginnings of the human race. I like to think, we, in a modern society, can be a little more compassionate about the sanctity of human life than Mr. Terrell. Richard H.... Full story
The Spay-Neuter Action Project commends the Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary for its tireless work in finding homes for orphaned dogs and cats and for supporting the community of Fallbrook. Our partnership with FAS began in early 2021 when SNAP implemented “SNAP North” to serve Escondido, Fallbrook, Oceanside, and Tribal Nations. FAS has limited medical capacity thus we perform important spay and neuter surgeries on intact dogs and cats from their facility aboard our Neuter Scooter mobile surgical unit. Our deeply discounted spa... Full story
Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 I recently spoke at the Southern California State of Reform Health Policy Conference in San Diego. The daylong discussions covered a wide range of health care initiatives and policies that impact all Californians. During my presentation, I discussed major topics slated by the legislature for next year. This year we dealt with telehealth, opioids and substance abuse, access to health care, Medi-Cal and mental health. My legislation included creating a grant program framework for Medication... By now everyone has heard of Trump Derangement Syndrome, often abbreviated as TDS, which is that bizarre hatred and fixation on anything "Trump." A typical characteristic of TDS, which has remarkable persistence and is likely chronic, is a tendency to lash out angrily at any mention of Trump. Another is the inability to admit to any positive accomplishments ever done by President Trump, no matter how glaringly obvious. Which brings me to John H. Terrell's letter of Dec. 2, entitled "Promises: empty words or real... Full story
Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District Far too often those suffering from behavioral health issues end up in our jails. While I believe that those violating our laws should be held accountable, without the proper assistance to manage their mental illness, the cycle of being released and ending up back in jail will continue. A few months ago, I took a tour of the Behavioral Health Court and was inspired to see a renewed outlook on life for those who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness and are involved in the crimina... Over 20 years ago, I was managing a 24-hour business in town. During the night, the water heater decided it was no longer going to function. What fun, right? So, I contacted a man named Ed Shobe of Shobe Plumbing. I was amazed that he arrived within 10 minutes. I was impressed with what happened next. He popped right out of his work vehicle and identified himself with just the biggest smile. So, where is this water heater? I recalled him asking and I imagined in a tone of voice that mocked a medieval knight about to face... Full story
Ms. Julie Reeder, this long-delayed letter is written to express my appreciation for your accomplishments as Editor and Publisher of The Fallbrook Village News, the contents of which, after my many years of reading, stand out as somewhat unique in comparison to the other newspapers I’ve read over many years. While my wife's parents, who moved to Fallbrook back in 1973 from Flintridge/ La Canada, had often mentioned what a wonderful community it was, I had no full appreciation of the extent of its uniqueness! Growing up in H... Full story
In December 1965, the Mama's and the Papa's hit single "California Dreamin" was released, slowly moving up the charts to be atop the Billboard song list. Inspired by a cold snap on a dreary New York winter's day, two collaborating songwriters wrote a song dreaming of California's sunny days. Michelle Phillips penned the lyrics while her bandmate husband John added the hypnotic melody that would transcend the lives and imaginations of a generation of teenagers across the land. California Dreamin', the song that immortalized... Full story
I will refer to Benson as the author. The author purports to have “read the science of COVID-19.” However, there’s no indication of that in her letter. For instance, the author begins by incorrectly stating that prior vaccines were well tested for years before use. The Salk polio vaccine certainly was not. It did take them over a year, but it wasn’t because they were more meticulous. That was in 1953: their problem was they didn’t have the computers and specialized software to rapidly collate and analyze their test data like... Full story
Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District This Friday, Dec. 10, the SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) will be voting on the most expensive transportation project ever. More expensive than the international space station, SANDAG’s regional transportation plan is estimated to cost (in today’s dollars) $160 billion. Almost the entirety of the plan will focus on public transportation in the downtown-region of San Diego, meaning once again North County will be shut down. In 2004, SANDAG came to elected officials and the vot... Full story
It was with great interest that I read Supervisor Jim Desmond’s recent column in the Village News. Of particular note was his closing paragraph: “It’s simply inhumane to live like this on the streets. As a society we can do better. Some may say it’s inhumane to force people off the streets and into treatment, but I think it’s more inhumane to keep people on the streets.” I wonder if a large part of our fear/revulsion about institutionalizing mentally ill or addicted people relates to the iconic 1975 movie “One flew over the C... Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News Is it just me or do you feel that when your car is clean, it drives better? Maybe so, yet after two years in the garage, I felt it was prudent to take her for a safety check in lieu of just a wash before driving north to see my 10-week-old-twin-great grandsons, Levi and Grayson. Although my car wasn’t due for an oil change for another 7,000 miles, a road trip of this distance required a safety check at the least. Apparently, the mechanic sniggered when he read I had j... Julie Reeder Publisher Years ago during a potential cancer scare (which didn’t turn out to be an issue), I was researching cancer treatments. I learned a lot about alternative treatments. Another thing I stumbled upon was the collusion and corruption between government agencies and big pharmaceutical companies. One doctor in Texas, Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, is a medical doctor and pioneering biochemist. He discovered a unique and proprietary method of successfully treating most cancers, called Antineoplastons AS2-1. His r... Full story
This is a scary moment. This term, the 6-3 hyper partisan supermajority on the Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments on some of the most consequential cases of our lifetime. These cases open the door to gutting gun safety laws, further rolling back a woman’s right to choose, and undermining clean air protections. Our fundamental rights hang in the balance. But there’s a way to fight back, which is why I’m urging Congress to pass the Judiciary Act of 2021. The Judiciary Act would rebalance the Supreme Court by adding four... Full story

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 California’s State Auditor, Elaine Howle, is retiring after 21 years. The Auditor’s office is an invaluable resource, investigating inefficiency and waste, along with fraud and abuse in government agencies. Over the years, Howle has not shied away from some of the most contentious issues/failures of state government. Examples include probes into the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Employment Development Department and the state’s efforts to combat homelessness. At the DMV, auditors found... Full story
This letter is written by a concerned citizen and it is not intended to be a political statement. I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I have chosen to register to vote as NPP (No Party Preference). As with all Americans who believe in the Democratic process, elections should represent the will of the people and each vote should be cast only by the actual person submitting a ballot. I voted in the 2012 election and gave my name as usual to the person in charge of distributing the ballots. I stated my name, Gary Vix.... Full story
Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District I don’t think there’s ever been a more important Thanksgiving than this year. Now more than ever is a time for reflection, for sitting down and thinking about all the things for which we are grateful. I was grateful to sit down with my family this year, have a wonderful meal and just spend time with each other. It’s been a hectic year and we haven’t had enough opportunity to all sit down, talk about our lives and be together. No matter how or where you spent your Thanksgiving this year, c... Full story
With cultural appropriations redefining what is and isn't acceptable in our lives today, my passion for eating Neapolitan ice cream may be coming to its culinary end. You see, I savor the taste of all three flavors without prejudice from one delectable flavor to the next. I love the decadent taste of chocolate as much as I do the mouthwatering flavor of strawberry and enjoy vanilla with equal amounts of impartiality and vigor. On the surface, eating ice cream seems like an innocuous thing, if not a most enjoyable endeavor.... Full story
Early in Trump’s career as a public figure, he found that if you promise people something they’d really, really like to have, you can get their undivided attention. He also developed the persona of complete confidence: that he could deliver the goods. But there’s a downside to promises: if you deliver, then you have to come up with something else to capture the peoples’ interest. Trump’s solution: never deliver on a promise – just keep stringing the people along. Here are two prime examples: 1. Trump vowed to “build the... Full story
