Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News It started way back in my childhood. We were poor. At the time, I was even convinced I must have been switched at birth. Surely, I belonged to another family. Like most kids, I didn’t appreciate how hard my parents worked just to keep us alive. The only thing I saw was that my friends had nicer clothes than I had. Jealousy sparked my lifelong love affair with ironing. After all, if my clothes were wrinkle-free, they might pass for new. Call me crazy. To this day, I s... Full story
Julie Reeder Publisher Last week I wrote about how it seems we are fighting fascism. I want to explore a bit more on something I mentioned last week. I think it goes without saying, for anyone who has really considered it that the First Amendment is the most important Amendment and the reason it’s first is to protect all our other freedoms. We need free speech in order to discuss ideas and to evaluate their merit. We need a free press as accountability for the government and we need the right to be a watchdog for our g... Full story
The week after I wrote my column on zestimates, Zillow, the creator of the zestimate, discontinued their i-buyer program because they owned 9,790 homes at a value of $3.75 billion, with two-thirds of them underwater. Zillow is trying to unload 7,000 homes with a value of approximately $1.8 billion. Their CEO, Richard Barton, cited price forecasting volatility as the main reason that Zillow had been overpaying for homes. Turns out that their very own zestimate program was not... Full story
Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 Last Thursday was Veterans Day, or Armistice Day to an older generation, originally commemorating the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when the guns fell silent in World War I. It’s a day we set aside to honor our veterans, with speeches and parades. But we need to do more. Going forward, we should provide tangible support for veterans and their families, and a big step here in California would be to stop taxing veterans’ retirement pay. California is one of just three sta... Full story
Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District San Diego County and the State of California have spent hundreds of millions of dollars helping those who are experiencing homelessness. However, we continue to see the problem expand with no visible results. In fact, it seems more widespread and worse. So, what can we do? I believe that the majority of those who are experiencing homelessness struggle with substance abuse. As a society, we have gone from one extreme – the war on drugs, by incarcerating anyone using or selling drugs – to... Full story
Driving up the 15, the freeway sign reminds us: Severe Drought Please Conserve Water! Easy to read, harder to do. How about we share ideas of how we can actually do this? Here are some habits I've acquired which might work for you too. 1. Keep a garden watering can by or in your kitchen sink. Fill it when you're waiting for hot water (instead of it going down the drain). (I have to waste five gallons of water before hot water gets to all parts of our house.) A recirculating system doubled our propane bill, so this works... Full story
Sarah Nagle Senior Advisor Californians for School Choice The California public school system is currently sinking like the Titanic. A couple of decades ago California public schools were some of the best in the country. But those days are long gone. The last two years have been a wakeup call for parents, and a disaster for children. In Sacramento when politicians talk about school choice, they are usually talking about money. But when parents talk about school choice, they are talking about something far more personal and fa... Full story
We all wonder the same about you. How can educated people be so naive and gullible? Yes, we are blessed to be in a country free from all the diseases you mentioned. However, those vaccines were well tested for years compared to months for this CCP virus vaccine we have now. Those vaccines actually prevented the diseases you describe with very little to no side effects. And our government wasn't hiding all the facts and falsifying the data. I don't remember reading your letters about all the BLM and Antifa "rallies" burning... Full story
Julie Reeder, you are correct. It just doesn't make sense. None of it. It's not right. It's not constitutional. It just doesn't make sense... Unless our current president and his administration intend to dismantle and destroy this United States of America, our constitutional republic, that many or even most of us have come to know and to love. “The Disaster at Our Southern Border” is a case in point. That is the title of an article published by Hillsdale College based upon a lecture given in July of this year by Mark Morgan.... Full story
I just read a news article about AB3121 that I bet few people have read. California Assembly Bill 3121 establishes the Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans, with a Special Consideration for African Americans Who are Descendants of Persons Enslaved in the United States (Task Force or Reparations Task Force). The purpose of the Task Force is: (1) to study and develop reparation proposals for African Americans; (2) to recommend appropriate ways to educate the California public of the task... Full story
Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District Last week, SANDAG’s Board of Directors received a report on their $160 billion transportation plan. One of the big questions when it comes to their ‘ambitious’ plan is, how are they going to pay for it? Well, we are starting to get a clearer picture. One aspect is to track and tax all San Diegans. San Diegans would be charged a set price for every mile traveled within the State of California. The money collected from vehicle drivers would then be used to pay for public trans... Full story
While I am not surprised, I continue to be disappointed in the reporting done by the Fallbrook Village News. Rick Monroe’s article on the Fallbrook High School Board of Trustees’ meeting of Oct. 25 was so blatantly one-sided that it isn’t reporting at all, but more like pandering. He didn’t mention one word about the members of the public in attendance that commented on the board’s responsibility to follow the State mandate and help keep our residents safe and healthy. He didn’t say one word about the racist, hateful and... Full story
Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 The San Pedro Port Complex handles 40% of containerized cargo that enters the United States. The complex is also the primary gateway for all U.S. trade to Asia. Disruptions in the global supply chain are driven by multiple factors. These include impacts of COVID-19 on the workforce and terminal operations, increased online shopping and more overseas purchases, lack of trucks and rail cars, lack of warehouse space to store containers and a failure to implement modern port... For the first time in 20 years, we celebrate Veterans Day in relative peace. On Nov. 11, 1918, Ralph Lindsey wrote from his hospital bed in France “Armistice signed at 11 o’clock. Grand celebration all over France. War is at last over and I am still alive!” Later in life if you asked him about the scars on his chest he would simply respond with a shrug and say, “I zigged when I should have zagged.” Ralph was my great-grandfather, and now, nearly 103 years after he wrote those words, our nation once again finds ourselves... Hoover Institution’s Victor Davis Hanson is certainly a good choice to tell us about lying, since he has first hand experience, which he presents here. He starts with saying Dr. Fauci lied when he said masks were of little use. According to Reuters: “A video circulating on social media shows Dr Anthony Fauci, … saying ‘there’s no reason to be walking around with a mask.’ Fauci’s remarks were made on March 8, 2020 and do not represent his current stance on face coverings nor the updated guidance issued by the Centers for Disea... Julie Reeder Publisher Merrium Webster defines Fascism as “a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition,” or (2) “a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control.” What do you have when your president mandates things that are unconstitutional and illegal and has a host of unel... Was the election in the Commonwealth a bellwether for the 2022 midterms? It appears that the deep blue state of Virginia has come to its political senses. McAuliffe could not be saved from his humiliating defeat even with the parade of leftist luminaries coming to his aid, including the two-term "King of Narcissism" himself. Not only did Virginia elect a Republican governor, but they also elected a Republican Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. And to think that these two new inductees to the state's leadership posts,... Full story
Victor Davis Hanson The Daily Caller In a controversial passage in Plato’s “Republic,” Socrates introduced the idea of the “noble lie” (“gennaios pseudos”). A majestic fiction, he says, could sometimes serve society by persuading uninformed citizens of something good for them. Ever since, many prevaricators have used the excuse that they lied for the common good. Take Dr. Anthony Fauci, our point man on the COVID-19 epidemic. Fauci misled the country about mask-wearing during the pandemic by claiming they were of little use... Full story
The Fallbrook Post Office at the corner of Mission Road and Fallbrook Street is a staple in the lives of most Fallbrook residents. Whether it’s conducting business inside the lobby or just dropping off mail at the remote mailboxes, we all pass through this Fallbrook landmark from time to time. I have noticed for many months now that the landscaping of our post office has deteriorated to the point that it is almost nonexistent – unless dead shrubs, loose trash, broken branches, weeds, and tumbleweeds are all the rage the... We in Fallbrook are fortunate to have a newspaper managed by a person who strives to report news as it should be, based on fact. Julie Reeder is a very knowledgeable, outstanding journalist whose rebuttals to criticisms over what goes into her paper are not based on what she has gleaned from what many think are reliable sources of information. These, in reality, are often publications supported by and controlled by those whose goal is to control our thinking and get us to believe what they want us to believe. Instead, she... Full story
I was so thankful that a good friend beat COVID within a very short period of time despite (or perhaps) because that person never had the vaccine. I am thankful that the drugs hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin started turning things around quite quickly for the better for my friend (a Fallbrook resident.) Fortunately, there are doctors who know the benefits of these drugs and are using them with great success in the treatment of this virus. These two drugs have been helping people and saving lives for many years. In fact,... Full story
Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News It’s hard to recall when it started, but now that I think about it, this has been going on for more than three decades. Sometimes it’s so vague, I forget to even think about it, believing instead that my coordination is slipping. But, not really. It’s him. I have never believed in ghosts, ghouls, spirits, or things that “go bump in the night.” Yet, there is a certain energy in my aura, I know this sounds hokey, I can’t believe I am saying it out loud. But, the fact of... Full story

Assemblymember Marie Waldron AD-75 On Nov. 7, the annual ritual of “falling back'' will be upon us again, despite 60% voter approval for Proposition 7 in 2018 that was aimed at eliminating the bi-annual time change. So what’s going on and why are we still doing this? Daylight saving time was first imposed as a temporary energy saving measure during World War I, and was reinstated during World War II. After World War II ended, states were allowed to decide the issue, and in 1949, voters approved Proposition 12, per... Full story
One really effective way to exploit workers is to employ them as independent contractors, rather than employees. So, no hourly wages, no employee perks like vacation, paid sick leave, or health insurance. This puts all the risk on the IC’s. A prime example of this ploy is multi-level marketing MLM – think Amway, Mary Kay. Last year, MLM’ s were noted as a $36 billion industry in the U.S. That is a lot of money. But how well did their IC’s do? According to Prnewswire, of the 20 million IC’s, nearly half (47%) lost money and a... Full story
