  • What am I missing?

    Updated Jul 21, 2021

I must be missing something. You see, I had a request for a receipt of an old purchase. Since I am good at documentation, I retrieved the receipt immediately. Challenge: It was printed with disappearing ink and I lost out. Why do businesses use that paper that will allow the ink to disappear? For me, this means scanning that receipt now which is equivalent to doing their job. No thanks, I have a job. So, this leaves me with a few thoughts: 1) Ask for a different receipt, 2) Try to not think the business is shady, else why... Full story

  • Re: 'High School recall group offers to pick up signatures' [Village News, 7/8/21]

    Updated Jul 21, 2021

As I have written before regarding the recall of FUHSD Board President, I find it appalling that this group wishes to have the district use even more funds to recall one board member, when there are five, especially since the claim is that the district will be operating in a deficit for the 2022-2023 school year. As far as the claim of grades plummeting and mental health issues, we are coming out of a pandemic. Poor grades and mental health are a problem at every single school. As far as 88% not meeting state standards in... Full story

Ethan Yang Special to Village News The climate activist and Time Magazine’s 2019 Person of the Year Greta Thunberg made the following remark at the 2019 U.N. Climate Action Summit, "You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet, I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!" Thunberg’s remarks are riddl... Full story

  • Kicking It in Home Economics

Elizabeth Youngman Westphal, Special to The Village News|Updated Jul 17, 2021

Back when I was a freshman in high school, we only had a few electives. As it happened, all of the girls I knew registered for Home Economics. Reflecting over the years, I find it astonishing to realize it was that two-semester class that prepared me for the rest of my life. In Home Economics, under Miss Olson’s keen eye, I learned to follow directions by reading the instructions for recipes. I learned when paying close attention to exact measurements, mixing instructions, tem... Full story

  • Help for domestic violence victims

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jul 17, 2021

A lot has happened during my first three years on the Board of Supervisors, but there is nothing that I’m prouder to be a part of than the Family Justice Center, coming to San Marcos. Over the last year, I’ve worked with District Attorney Summer Stephan to bring this unique and life- saving center to North County. The Family Justice Center is safe haven for those suffering from domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking. Victims and their children can come to the... Full story

  • Why can't we just follow the science?

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jul 17, 2021

Why can’t we just follow the science? What are we following? We put up with lockdowns and distancing, masks and experimental jabs. Now our politicians are encouraging students and pregnant women to take a shot that clearly has a high rate of negative incidents, health issues, miscarriages and deaths as proven by the government VAERS database. Why are we masking our children when they have almost a zero chance of getting the virus or passing it? Three recent studies out of t... Full story

  • Re: '7th annual Charity Golf and Dinner event cancelled' [Village News, 7/8/21]

    Updated Jul 17, 2021

We wanted to let our community and donors know that we are clarifying last week’s article to reflect the comment regarding grant funds received from the Fallbrook Regional Health District. Last year we wrote three grants, one of which was a collaborative with the Foundation for Senior Care, requesting a total of $201,000 and received $186,000. This year we wrote two grants, again one with the Foundation for Senior Care, requesting a total of $154,547 and received $109,340 – reflecting a total difference from last yea... Full story

  • Re: 'Critical Race Theory - What's the big deal' [Village News, Terrell letter 6/24/21] and 'Woke Foundations' [Village News, Terrell letter 7/8/21]

    Updated Jul 17, 2021

Mr. Terrell's critique of this whole subject of CRT and actually the correct reporting of Chris Rufo is all a smoke screen and a big fat lie. There is not one ounce of truth or even common sense as to what Terrell is saying. Did you even read the whole series reported by Ms Reeder on the CRT subject? CRT is nothing more than divisive ideas disguised as "diversity training." In reality it is Brainwashing for Idiots 101. Some have mastered language to manipulate and twist words to make it fit their agenda. Nevertheless still a... Full story

  • California homicides on the rise

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th Assembly District|Updated Jul 17, 2021

According to a report by the FBI, 2020 was the deadliest year in California since 2007, with homicides increasing by 31%. Public safety should be our priority, but we’ve been moving in the wrong direction. In California, 28% of homicides last year were gang-related, 7% were the result of domestic violence. Minority populations suffered the most as Hispanics accounted for 45% of homicide victims, and African Americans, 31%. The homicide rate in 2019 was the lowest since 1966, m... Full story

    Updated Jul 17, 2021

SACRAMENTO – The California State Assembly unanimously approved, July 8, Senate Concurrent Resolution 12 by Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) to designate a portion of Interstate 5 in Carlsbad as the “CAL FIRE Chief William R. Clayton Memorial Highway.” With the Senate previously approving SCR 12, it will soon become law as it does not need Governor Newsom’s approval. Chief Clayton, who passed away in 2018 at his home in Carlsbad, helped rescue hundreds of people during his career and twice received Califor... Full story

  • Re: 'Woke foundations use dollars….' [Village News, 6/24/21]

    John H. Terrell|Updated Jul 10, 2021

For brevity, I will refer to the subject letter’s author as “you” and will not comment on its Trumpisms. You say: "Black Lives Matter thugs” have extorted billions of dollars from hapless businesses. Briefly, that’s ludicrous. You may want to believe otherwise, but the social justice reform movement is widely popular today, not only here but in other developed countries as well. You can get an idea of its broad scope here: “Companies Taking A Public Stand In The Wake Of George Floyd’s Death” (Forbes (6/04/2020). Th... Full story

  • Water for tribal governments

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th Assembly District|Updated Jul 10, 2021

In the late 1800s, the federal government granted San Luis Rey River water rights to the cities of Vista and Escondido, depriving local tribes of water they had used for thousands of years. In essence, allocating the water rights twice. According to Bo Mazzetti, Rincon Tribal Chairman, “The cattle were dying. The Trees were dying.” In the 1960s the tribes sued, leading to a final settlement that was eventually agreed upon 50 years later. As a member of the Escondido City Cou... Full story

I want to thank you for the excellent coverage you provided to our community when the key message of Memorial Day was observed at our local Fallbrook cemetery. This is as it should be for it affords men, women and children a time to be reminded that the blessings of freedom Americans enjoy throughout the world have been paid for by the sacrifice of the lives of millions of men and women who fought and died so that freedom might continue to prosper. Likewise, thank you for the clear and thorough descriptions you have provided... Full story

  • While we were celebrating, the NEA was voting to teach systematic racism

    Julie Reeder|Updated Jul 10, 2021

Publisher’s Note: I am using this piece below as a response to those who have written to me that CRT is not being taught in schools and that it’s another conspiracy theory. My response to them was “It’s another conspiracy theory until you figure out that it’s not.” Critical Race Theory is real and now the NEA has decided to proudly fight for it with their $350,000 annual budget. I believe they are out of step with many of their members as they have been for decades. I’ve obser... Full story

  • My transportation vision

    Superviser Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jul 10, 2021

In last week’s op-ed, I talked about SANDAG’s latest proposal for a ‘road charge.’ For those who didn’t read it, this would be a set price all San Diegans are charged for every mile traveled within the state of California. The money would then be used to pay for public transportation. While I believe public transportation has its place, I’m completely against a per-mile road charge and continuing to add taxes to San Diegans. But the question has come up, “If you were in charge, where would you want to see transportation money... Full story

  • Legislative update

Senator Brian Jones, District 38|Updated Jul 10, 2021

My “Porch Pirates” measure, SB358, has been approved by the Assembly Public Safety Committee. The increase in Californians ordering more food, medicine‚ and other products for home delivery has unfortunately been accompanied with a rise in thefts of those items. So-called ‘Porch Pirates’ often follow delivery trucks throughout a neighborhood and commit multiple thefts in the same day. Allowing judges to impose up to a year, rather than just six months, in jail should be an effective deterrent. SB 549 - Makes social workers e... Full story

Dr. Rick Koole, LifePointe Church|Updated Jul 10, 2021

Having just celebrated the Fourth of July, let's pause to remember there was a reason the founders of our country chose to place the following amendment first among those in the Bill of Rights. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. • Transcendent Touch helps switch from survival to wellness

    Zach Branch|Updated Jul 10, 2021

My fiancé had a massage from Craig Lozzi at Transcendent Touch that profoundly influenced her spiritual awareness. The massage was a gift from me, and when she came home telling me about the shift in consciousness she had, I was so happy that she had a good experience...yet I'm ashamed to admit I also would not allow myself to accept how profound whatever had happened was. I'm writing this review because I moved from unbelief to unreserved acceptance after having my own massage with Craig. Around the same time my fiancé h... Full story

  • FUESD leadership changes

    Updated Jun 30, 2021

Through no fault but my own, I was unable to get these comments heard at the FUESD Board meeting Monday, June 21. I sent this email to the board members and my hope is that by sending them in as a Letter to the Editor, the comments will be made known to members of the public as well. I am writing this email because I was unable to get to a working computer in time to send a request to speak at the board meeting tonight. I want to add my voice to those who have great concerns about the change in leadership of the elected...

  • A breath of fresh air

    Updated Jun 30, 2021

What a blessing to hear our USA cheerleader, President Trump, this evening. He speaks extemporaneously, from the heart with vigor and power. It invigorates our hope and our spirit. What a beautiful, enthusiastic difference from the last six months. We, who are conservatives, needed this "shot in the arm." I, one of many, have missed our "get the job done" President. The difference between "do nothing" Biden and President Trump is mammoth. There is more to come. Praise the Lord! Orolie Gubser...

  • Kicking It in my car

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal, Special to the Village News|Updated Jun 30, 2021

While my ride is nothing more than a hunk of metal and leather, the old girl is still considered stylish. Maybe it’s her collapsible roof that makes her chic? I don’t remember the exact year my car model was introduced, but I believe it was about 10 years after the brand came to the U.S. in 1990. Still recognized for its quality, this nameplate has remained in fashion as the luxury brand for a well-known Japanese automaker. The reason I sold my former two-seater convertible wa...

  • Vaccine insanity for employers

    Updated Jun 30, 2021

As I read the article on “Employers Now Not Required to Report Vaccine Related Injuries” in the Epoch Times June 2-8, I wonder how many of you think this is insane? So let me get this straight and I am sure some of you on the left will enlighten us with your absurd justification, but OSHA is suspending the requirement of employers to report injuries caused by the vaccine that employers are requiring their employees to take in an effort to convince people to take this vaccine? Back in 2020, our stupid government allowed emp...

  • Per-mile tax is a nonstarter

    Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jun 30, 2021

In 2004, SANDAG proposed a new sales tax to voters that would generate $14 billion dollars, which promised to relieve traffic congestion, improve safety, and match state/federal funds to improve the following freeways: I-5, I-8, I-15, SR 52, SR 54, SR 56, SR 67, SR 76, SR 78, SR 94, SR 125, I-805. And the measure promised improvements to public transit routes. Voters passed this under the impression their commute home would be made faster and easier. This has not happened. Instead, SANDAG staff front-loaded public transit...

  • California bans travel to 5 more dangerous red states

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jun 30, 2021

California has decided to restrict state-funded travel to five more red states, bringing the total to 17. This is partisan politics cloaked in non-discrimination. This action is consistent with this whole new culture of anti-bias and social justice. California Attorney General Rob Bonta made the announcement partly because the red states are “working to prevent transgender women and girls from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity.” It was als...
