    Four more bills pass Assembly

    Assemblymember Tasha Boerner Horvath, 76th district|Updated Jun 9, 2021

This week, four more of my bills passed the Assembly and are one big step closer to becoming law! These bills aim to make our state a fairer, safer, healthier, and more sustainable place to live. Here's what made it out this week: AB 66: Bluff Collapse Early Warning Notification System Creates the science around bluff collapses on our coast. Initiates the first phase in creating an early warning notification system to alert beach-goers of dangers. Keeps our beaches and...

  • San Diego County is being taken advantage of

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jun 9, 2021

The federal government is taking advantage of San Diego County and it shows no sign of stopping. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been briefed on the situation at our Southern Border. After seeing the heartbreaking pictures of kids in cramped quarters and the increased risk of being sexually trafficked, I’ve been deeply troubled by many aspects. After learning that the state and the federal government are also refusing to test those entering the United States for COVID-19, I’m wo...

  • Earth is not our trash can

    Updated Jun 9, 2021

What person on earth thinks it is okay to take their drive thru lunch and throw it out of the car in a parking lot? Every weekend I go to Lowe's in Temecula to pick up our home project materials and sadly see trash from Cane's chicken restaurant thrown on the parking lot from both sides of a car in many parking spaces. There are trash cans outside Cane's and Lowe's and the drivers have trash cans at home. The drivers can also put the trash back in the paper bag and store in the car trunk until they get home. Anything but...

  • Some good news

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th Assembly District|Updated Jun 2, 2021

The Appropriations Committee can be a place where good bills go to die. But despite its reputation, some important legislation made it through Appropriations before the May 21 deadline. That includes two of my bills, AB 653, which creates a grant for substance use treatments in county jails and for those on supervised parole, and AB 22, a bill I jointly authored to phase in Transitional Kindergarten eligibility for all four-year-olds. Another important education bill, AB 498...

  • Critical Race Theory – In light of Memorial Day – Part 3

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jun 2, 2021

As we celebrate Memorial Day and honor the memory of all our veterans who have given everything they have for this country, it’s important that we each continue to be diligent to protect our freedoms from within, not only for our children but also for those veterans and their children and grandchildren. In review, as we have been looking at Critical Race Theory (CRT, “Theory,” “Ethnic Studies,” “Woke” or “Identity Politics”) the last couple of weeks, we have learned it is cou...

  • Re: 'Where's the truth?' [Village News, Reardon letter, 5/27/21]

    Updated Jun 2, 2021

Letter writer Mike Reardon responded to my letter in response to his. Obviously, he is still in the dark to the truth, which is difficult to find while listening to the DNC propaganda news. I will try to enlighten you. The Keystone pipeline was finished under Trump, and it carried oil from Canada and South Dakota. Yes, the U.S. also had massive amounts of shale oil. It pipes oil to the gulf refineries and docks. If we didn’t open it, Canada would have built a pipeline to their west coast to sell oil to China, who d...

  • Real Estate Round-Up: N is for negotiating

Kim Murphy, Murphy and Murphy Southern Realty|Updated Jun 2, 2021

The real estate market is on fire! There are very few homes for sale, so negotiating the best terms for our clients is the single most important asset an experienced Realtor brings to the transaction. Negotiating exists at all levels of the transaction. The principals make all the final decisions, but truth be told, an effective Realtor negotiates not only with the other Realtor, but with the principal they are representing. If principals had the information available, and... Full story

  • Kicking It on Memory Lane

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal, Special to The Village News|Updated Jun 2, 2021

After a year of Covid isolation, I am in complete agreement with Michael Douglas who admits in his recent interview in AARP magazine that he now suffers from short-term memory loss due to his past year’s pandemic isolation. Well, me, too! As I see it, the consequence of my short-term memory loss is why my long-term memory has kicked in. I know because I keep recalling things from a long time ago that I never have before now. For instance, every time I zip up my jeans, I r...

  • Issa testifies on lasting damage of Biden's open border policies

    Updated Jun 2, 2021

WASHINGTON – Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-50) testified May 27 before a House Natural Resources Committee-led forum on the impacts of the Biden Administration’s reckless open border policies. Committee Republicans held the session to call attention to the serious consequences of record-high levels of migrant traffic into the United States. “The chaos that is enveloping our southern border is the direct result of reckless actions and stunning indifference from the Biden Administration,” said Issa. "This was a forum that ne...

  • COVID-19 relief

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jun 2, 2021

The federal government has allocated over $300 million to San Diego County for COVID-19 recovery efforts. Each Supervisor has submitted their plans to the Chief administrative officer for how they would like the money to be used. The CAO will then take all the requests and the board will vote on the allocation of dollars on Tuesday, June 8. Some of my requests include helping our restaurants, assisting our first responders and military families, and mental health services for...

  • Re: 'Critical Race Theory: What's the big deal?' [Village News, 5/20/21]

    Updated Jun 2, 2021

Thank you, Julie Reeder, for your coverage of Critical Race Theory. Like many (or most) of us, I had never heard the term, but I’m seeing it come up more and more. Recently Hillsdale College featured a publication based upon a lecture by Christopher Rufo on “Critical Race Theory: What it is and How to Fight it.” He reveals its roots in Marxism, just as you have, Julie. He goes on to say that it was relegated for many years to universities and obscure academic journals, but it has become the default ideology in Ameri...

  • Senate approves 'Brandon's Law' to ban deceptive marketing in rehab industry

    Updated Jun 2, 2021

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate unanimously approved “Brandon’s Law” (Senate Bill 434) by Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) to prohibit an operator of rehabilitation treatment facilities from providing any form of false advertising or marketing services. SB 434 will head next to the Assembly for its consideration. “I’m pleased that my Senate colleagues approved my bill to help stop the exploitation of vulnerable people seeking addiction treatment,” said Senator Bates, a former social worker whose beat en...

  • Drowning prevention

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated May 26, 2021

We are blessed to live in a County that is home to many beaches and pools, which we can enjoy all year long. Unfortunately, along with the beauty and fun of swimming, tragedy can strike. Drowning is among the leading causes of deaths for children under the age of 5. My family has experienced the tragedy of a loved one drowning and I want to do all I can to make sure no family has to experience that same pain. In 2020, data showed that in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, mo...

  • Woke foundations use dollars acquired through capitalism to undermine free market principles

    Richard Graber|Updated May 26, 2021

Recently, the Ford Foundation announced plans to provide $1 billion in funding toward social justice programs, an extension of the $1 billion it handed out in 2015. The resulting press coverage, including a profile of its president on “60 Minutes,” was effusive. Ford is not alone in its philanthropic wokeism. Many other large foundations have followed suit. The Mellon Foundation, one of the largest funders of the arts and humanities, is now prioritizing social justice in all its grant-making. The Rockefeller Foundation too...

  • Memorial Day

Robert Graves, Disabled American Veterans California Director of Operations|Updated May 26, 2021

I know you don't have too much time to learn the whole history of DAV, but here's a quick synopsis. Our Nationwide 100-year-old DAV family continues to serve both our veterans, their families, survivors, orphans, and our communities. We do this, not by ourselves... but with a village of individuals who care enough to seek out another way to give back to the country we promised to defend. We are dedicated to a single purpose: empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensurin...

  • Issa announces recognition program for Vietnam veterans

    Updated May 26, 2021

SAN MARCOS – Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-50) has announced an effort to thank and honor the service and sacrifice of Vietnam War veterans through the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration program. Issa released the following statement: “All of our veterans past and present deserve our gratitude. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, it is past time to uniquely recognize the service and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans. If you – a family member, friend, or neighbor – served during...

  • Re: 'Where's the truth?' [Village News, Schembri letter, 5/2021]

    Updated May 26, 2021

Letter writer Joe Schembri took exception to my previously published letter. He mentioned the “pipeline” that President Trump opened. Is he talking about the Keystone Pipeline? If he is, that pipeline was never completed. Also, he may not understand that the Keystone Pipeline was being constructed to transport shale oil that was created in Alberta, Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast. It is well known that the oil was going to be shipped abroad. How does that help our consumers? Why did the Canadians not construct a pipeline acr...

  • Critical Race Theory -- What's the big deal? Part 2

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated May 26, 2021

Last week we focused on the Marxist/neo-Marxist roots of Critical Race Theory (CRT) which are strong, but where neo-Marxism left off, postmodernism took over, making the way for CRT today. Postmodernism has its roots in Marxism and concepts written about by French theorists in the last century, including Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida and Jean-Francois Lyotard who were Marxist sympathizers. Postmodernism is a hard concept to describe, but it represents a set of ideas and...

  • Finding common ground

    Updated May 26, 2021

I hear the most about the 'liberal agenda' from conservatives. I hear the most about conservative beliefs from liberals. Both sides spend more time denouncing what they think the other side believes rather than learn what those beliefs really are. Funny thing: conservatives are technically liberals. Did you know that? The term “'Conservative” is short for “Conservative Liberalism” while the term “liberal” is short for “Liberal Socialism.” They are both variants of the more general political ideology of Liberalism: the...

  • There are still acts of kindness

    Updated May 26, 2021

Last week, I tripped in a local grocery parking lot and went down on my right knee and elbow. Before I knew it, a young woman named MaryAnn jumped out of her car to help me up. Not only that but she gave me first aid since my knee was bleeding and swelling. I looked for her name in the local phone book to say thank you in a more tangible way but, sadly, she is not listed. This letter is to say thank you to this lovely woman who put aside her plans to stay and help me. Due to my age she kept asking if I was okay. I assured...

  • A couple of rebuttals [Village News, Letters, 5/20/21]

    Updated May 26, 2021

The rebuttal to my “Biden’s job plans” letter was going great until the last sentence, which reads: “What many people seem to miss is that money not spent on taxes is in fact going into the economy….” That is absolutely not a fact. One way or another, the wealthy elite take about 80% of America’s revenue. A substantial percentage of that money goes into the banks (foreign and domestic), overseas tax havens, and foreign investments of the wealthy elite, never to be seen here again. Critical Race Theory and Systemic Raci...

  • Expand broadband now

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th Assembly District|Updated May 26, 2021

Access to broadband service is vital in today’s world and our rural north county area has a great need to improve access to the internet. Having a high-speed internet connection can make the difference when it comes to getting an education, a job, seeing a doctor or simply staying connected with family and friends. That’s why my caucus and I have long supported efforts to close the digital divide throughout California. A study commissioned by the California Public Uti...

  • Critical Race Theory: What's the big deal?

    Julie Reeder|Updated May 19, 2021

Why are parents battling school boards across the country over Critical Race Theory? Why did President Trump ban it from government agencies, only to have President Biden reverse the decision? Biden’s administration is pushing full steam ahead with what many see as divisive and damaging curricula on race in the classroom through a proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Education. The rule’s consequences would be more than academic. It would infuse critical race theory int...

  • Re: 'Where's the truth?' [Village News, Reardon letter, 5/6/21]

    Updated May 19, 2021

Writer Mike Reardon tries to criticize Orolie Gubser’s excellent letter with Democrat (Marxist) logic of 2+2=5. The writer evidently doesn’t understand how politics work. You take money from those who won’t vote for you, and give it to those who will. Warren Buffet owns a railroad that delivers oil to the refineries. Being a major buddy of Obama, Barack kept the pipeline closed for eight years to Warren’s benefit. Magically, gas prices stayed sky high for years. President Trump opened the pipeline making the U.S. independent...

  • Equity in healthcare

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th Assembly District|Updated May 19, 2021

COVID-19 has had a disproportionately severe impact on California’s low income, African American, Latino and Pacific Islander communities, as well as on essential workers such as those in the healthcare, grocery and cleaning service industries. That’s why I am proud to support Assembly Bill 1038 introduced by Assemblyman Mike Gipson (D – Carson). The bill establishes the California Health Equity Program within the Department of Public Health to provide grants supporting local...
