On Dec. 7, the organizational session for the State Assembly’s 2021-2022 convened in Sacramento. But this year, things looked a lot different than normal. Though a few bills were introduced, the Speaker and other Assembly officers were sworn in, and resolutions related to operating the House were adopted, the event was not held at the State Capitol building as usual. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the new session began at Golden 1 Center, the first time since 1907 that t...
Mr. Speaker, I rise this morning in defense of Gov. Gavin Newsom who recently defied his own idiotic COVID-19 edicts as he partied at one of the few restaurants that he has not yet forced out of business. I defend him because he was doing what we all once did in a free society: make our own decisions over what risks we are willing to run and what precautions we are willing to take according to our own circumstances to protect our own health. Yes, COVID-19 is a nasty bug, and...
So much is going on from a national point of view that is not being reported in mainstream media, it can be hard to keep up. But here is a quick 1,000-foot overview. President Donald Trump’s team has been filing lawsuits in swing states where they have hundreds of affidavits of election workers, voters and expert testimony of voter and election fraud, or like in Pennsylvania, where the voting systems were changed without going through the legislature and a judge has already ru...
Nov. 28 was ‘Small Business Saturday,’ a day to patronize local small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Without them, our state and national economies will never recover. My husband and I have owned our own small business for over 25 years, I know how hard it is to keep a business going in California. Costly, overbearing regulations, high taxes and fees, high rents, energy bills, all make doing business in this state a challenge. Now the pan...
I personally would like to thank everyone in our village who helped Fallbrook Scarecrow Days survive and thrive Oct. 1-31, especially the chamber staff which went out of their way to support us. We must especially thank those businesses who enjoyed our rental crows, complimented us about the silent people, liked flagpole pumpkin heads, a crow skeleton and Village Square Jack Skellington as well as all the neighbors who jumped on board this year with personal spook- tacular displays. The chamber and the entire town deserves...
Those of you who voted for the Biden-Harris agenda, hold on to your heart, your guns and your money. Away goes our 2nd amendment; watch out for amnesty for illegals, defunding of the police, uptick in violence, acquiescence to China – even after the CCP virus was unleashed on the world. Biden is a "globalist." President Trump is pro-America. That is what "we the people" voted for in 2016. I voted for that then and am one of the 74 million people of America who have been praying to God for a Trump resolution to the 2020 c...
The earth keeps giving and we keep on receiving. The oranges, lemons, tomatoes are still bearing fruit. I am grateful for having grown up where my early life was walking barefoot, with the beauty of the land, the mountains and oceans adding to life and living. A few days ago, a news person asked persons in the food line what were their thoughts. One said, “I’m thankful for having a home I can return to.” Another: “I’m thankful I can walk.” Still another: “I’m thankful for my health.” A number of years ago our son was visit...
I don’t think there’s ever been a more important Thanksgiving than this year. Now more than ever is a time for reflection, for sitting down and thinking about all the things for which we are grateful. I was grateful to sit down with my family this year, have a wonderful meal and just spend time with each other. It’s been a hectic year and we haven’t had enough opportunity to all sit down, talk about our lives and be together. I was grateful to talk to my extended family...
https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/05-04-02-0091 [New York, 3 October 1789] By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation. Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor – and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by...
The state could owe you money. The holiday season is fast approaching and many are suffering from severe economic distress resulting from the COVID-19 shutdowns, so take a few minutes to see if you have some money coming to you. The state of California is sitting on almost $10 billion in unclaimed properties. Some of that money could be yours. Under California’s Unclaimed Property Law, banks, insurance companies and other businesses are required to transfer property to the c...
There have been enough Trump misdeeds to fill several tell-all books and I’m sure they will, eventually. But they pale in comparison to his epic failure to address the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m sickened every time I think of the thousands who have died of COVID-19, needlessly, because of Trump’s failure to act. And I am angered when I think of Trump actively working to thwart our efforts to slow the pandemic down. He has served as the virtual poster child for those who continue to flout the basic protocol. And as long as Trump...
This week as I watched a press conference from five high-powered attorneys argue that they have proof of widespread election tampering, I wasn’t very surprised. I did wonder if there was enough to really make a difference. Here are three questions or concerns people are discussing. Is there evidence of actual widespread voter fraud or tampering ? Why does Trump cause division by firing people, including his election cyber security chief? Trump should just concede like H...
It’s getting blurry, isn’t it? The most marketed to society in the history of the planet is getting a steady dose so murky and laced with spin and rhetoric that it’s hard to tell right from down, left from right and where we even started? Where is it that America stands and what do we stand for? I believe I know, in fact, I think most Americans know. The idea of America is clear as day – it’s right there in the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, esta...
Throughout the past seven months, I’ve tried to follow the facts and the science. I’ve listened to our public health officials and the great work they’ve done. I’ve tried to get as much information as possible when it comes to this virus and I must say, I am concerned about the increase in positive cases. As the cases increase, it’s vital we have the available hospital capacity. People need to observe the safety protocols – distancing, masking and sanitization. I do hope eve...
As 2020 moves into the holiday season and the COVID-19 pandemic continues, let us take a moment to honor and support the millions of family caregivers who are taking on extraordinary responsibilities. Family caregivers include all of us, whether we provide services to our elders, our spouses/partners, friends or whether we are part of our children’s distance education. They care for those they love 24/7 and help keep us safe. To all family caregivers, you are appreciated for the love and caring you give others. Please r...
Here’s the problem I have with conspiracists. First, it’s a lazy grasp at intelligence. Second, personal accountability doesn’t exist for the conspiracist. Accountability. There’s that word again. I keep using it in my description of what ails our society in many ways – from student accountability to parental accountability, and now to societal accountability. Remember that wild-talking community member who always had something to say about someone being out to get them? The FBI, the CIA or the government. There were joke...
Hello Karen, I have labored over this reply for days since reading your letter to the editor, Nov. 5. To our mutual community of bridge players, anticipating my reply to your response to my Alaska column, let me offer this up, no comment. While I am always pleased to learn my column is being read, I will not bother to point out the abyss between our political differences. Hence, I’m gonna bite my tongue. The response that matters will come in a year, two years, four years max, long after China has refilled the empty s...
The Legislature will open Dec. 7 with the swearing in of all members and start the 2021-2022 session. Though a few bills are likely to be introduced, the day is largely ceremonial, and the new session will begin in earnest Jan. 6. Next year my priorities will continue to be on the needs of this region. We must ensure that we have sufficient resources and response to disasters like COVID-19 and prevention of wildfires, that we have a secure, reliable water supply for people...
It is a confusing time politically. I think it is compounded by being in the middle of pandemic restrictions. It’s a good thing we have the Constitution and rule of law to guide us. It’s hard to discern what is true and what isn’t. Most national media outlets called the election for Vice President Biden, although they hold no authority, and while he may very well be our next president, the current president’s team heard enough stories of fraud that they believed the election w...
As regional leaders, we face unprecedented challenges. The decisions we make today to address those challenges will be felt by those we serve long after we leave office. This moment of crisis presents us with a choice: what kind of region, state and country do we want to be? The choice begins with our state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an April commentary, I encouraged readers to remember it is up to "We the People" to ensure the governor's unilateral infringements...
As the President (who has a perfect right) continues to question the integrity of our election process, we wait in anticipation to determine what this country will be, a capitalist or socialist entity. The Biden agenda would destroy the middle class and promote illegal entrants into our country. We have already heard some of this. It's the other parts of the agenda which are in question. Biden has not laid out his total plan for America and I fear it will be quite radical. The far left is at his heels and he is too weak to...
Seven months ago, San Diegans were asked to flatten the curve, protect our most vulnerable and make sure we had enough personal protection equipment available. Seven months later, our curve has flattened, we are protecting our most vulnerable and we have more than enough personal protection equipment. While the people and business owners of San Diego have done everything that’s been asked of them, they’re being punished. With the state putting us back into the most restrictive...
Thank you for publishing the photo of me when I delivered candy bars to the seniors at the Regency Retirement Community on Oct. 17. Our troop has given a total of 760 candy bars altogether to our Fallbrook seniors. We learned that the seniors and staff members really enjoyed getting them. We are really happy that they did. Many of the seniors are veterans and are very important to us. Our Boy Scout Troop 731 is still very active even during the pandemic. Our Scoutmaster, David Creamer, has led our troop with many online...
Are we missing the boat by watching the vote counts? We are in the midst of COVID-19. A major pandemic. Do we really believe Trump actually had this disease? Or did he fake us all out by hiring actor 'doctors' to show how easy it was for him to get well? How could anyone possibly trust this man? Ann Harter...
No more TV commercials, no more opening up your mailbox to 20 different mailers from candidates, no more political signs, the 2020 election has come to a close, sort of. At the time of writing this, 64.4% of the votes have been counted in San Diego County and over 95% of the votes have been counted at the state. While some races are too close to call, it looks like there will be three new members on the Board of Supervisors. I look forward to working with Nora Vargas, Terra...
