  • America is full of good people who mean well and want justice

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jun 18, 2020

Our country is not perfect, however when we as a culture or a society see something unjust, we work hard to fix it. We did it with slavery, child labor, civil rights and women’s rights to name a few. This is why the whole country was united in the belief that George Floyd’s death was criminal. Everyone who saw that video was horrified. Almost every police officer agreed according to published news reports. After that, people of all ages, races and backgrounds wanted to ris... Full story

  • White privilege under scrutiny

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jun 11, 2020

This is response to Mr. Lawrence Coonradt's nice letter below. A professor of women’s studies at Wellesley College by the name of Peggy McIntosh, a white woman, came up with the theory and term “white privilege” in the 80s. It is the opinion of Brandon Tatum, a black man, white privilege is something that “woke” people talk about to make themselves feel better than other people. He believes, “White privilege is an attempt by the left to divide Americans by race.” In a... Full story

  • Prepare for future emergencies

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, AD-75 R|Updated Jun 11, 2020

In March, the California legislature recessed due to the COVID-19 emergency. This recess was unprecedented in our history and underscored a critical problem. While California lawmakers continued to work from their districts, they cannot vote on legislation when they are unable to meet in Sacramento. When it comes to technology, our legislature is stuck in the past. The recent recess and current social unrest have shown that it can be unsafe for members, their staff and the... Full story

  • Re: 'National news in the Village News' [Village News, Letter, 5/28/20]

    Updated Jun 11, 2020

Dear Julie, Thank you for such an excellent response to those who wish to keep their heads in the sand or elsewhere. They really believe that “why can’t we all get along?” really means “why can’t you all agree with me?” They really believe they are middle of the road and have no bias. I’m glad you realized pictures of bake sales and 3-foot checks to the Girl Scouts do not make a vibrant, important paper. Anyone who disregards their government’s actions and world influences on those actions deserves what they get, but I don... Full story

  • Fit By Design is closing after 17 years

    Updated Jun 11, 2020

When COVID-19 first hit the United States, we had no idea how bad it would turn out. By mid-March, it became evident that we needed to shut down our gym until we learned more about the virus. I started Fit by Design with one mission in mind – to help people in their quest to improve their health and well-being. I would not for any amount of money risk anyone’s health, not my trainers and certainly not my clients. Now that we have entered the third month with no income and fixed overhead costs still rising, we have had to make... Full story

  • Re: 'National news in the Village News' [Village News, Letter, 5/28/20]

    Updated Jun 11, 2020

At this point, dear Village News publisher, just own up to your political views. There is not a reader of the Village News that is unaware of your point of view. I am saddened that you choose a divisive bias, then explain that you attempt fair and balanced reporting. Your words are disingenuous and dishonest. Fallbrook deserves better. How about reprinting the James Mattis opinion article published in The Atlantic? I know there is not a chance you would do that. You have my permission to publish this in the opinion section... Full story

  • Opening up businesses

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jun 11, 2020

Throughout our battle against COVID-19, my goal has always been to open more businesses and continue our momentum while keeping people safe, especially protecting those that are vulnerable. Over the last two weeks, we’ve seen our restaurants, retail businesses, hair salons and barbershops open safely, without any major spikes in coronavirus cases or capacity issues in hospitals. While our testing has increased, the percentages of positive tests have gone down and continues to... Full story

  • In response to editorial: Will rioters listen to George Floyd's brother? [Valley News, June 5, 2020]

    Updated Jun 11, 2020

Good day Ms. Reeder, I found your editorial to be well written and articulate on the topic of the ongoing global demonstrations and protests in response to the murder of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers. I think that you raise and note some very important points and shed light on some of the events good and bad that have so far occurred. Thank you for that. With that being said however, and I state the following as a 65-year-old white male, I do take exception to some of your words. My caution to... Full story

  • Peaceful demonstration coverage

    Updated Jun 11, 2020

Thank you, Julie Reeder, and those in the Village News who covered the peaceful demonstrations in Fallbrook and Temecula. Your coverage and the words of those participants who were interviewed showed compassion for George Floyd, a fellow human being, who suffered terrible injustice at the hands of another human being and solidarity with black Americans. One of the protester’s signs read, “Racism isn’t greater, it’s filmed.” This thought brought me back to my youth when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a large group of black... Full story

  • Resident loves Village News for being local

    Updated Jun 11, 2020

I subscribe to the Fallbrook/Bonsall Village News because the newspaper brings specific information about my community to my home and for no other reason. Nowhere else can I find gardening tips for the Fallbrook general area and event announcements for schools, art galleries and musical performances. I like reading about a new local business opening, a food drive and honors achieved by neighborhood children and adults. Last week I drove down Main Avenue to see which businesses were open. Even that information enhances the... Full story

  • Re: The Coronavirus: who's really at fault? [Village News, S. Jones Letter, 5/28/20]

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

You want to play the blame game, Sue? The federal medical supply was under stocked when former President Barack Obama left office, so that’s Obama’s fault. Two and half years into President Donald Trump’s presidency, the stockpile was still under stocked. Whose fault might that be? Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico hard, Sept. 16, 2017, less than a year into Trump’s presidency. From the “under stocked” stockpile, the U.S. was able to provide Puerto Rico “213,634 N95 respirators, 299,706 gloves, 143,723 face shields and 3... Full story

  • Pick up your dog's poop

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

It’s a disgusting habit to leave those little green gift bags behind; they have littered Los Jilgueros Preserve, Dinwiddie Park, Santa Margarita River trails. Picking up your dog’s poop is part of ownership. I and many others, do not appreciate having to walk around those little green baggies. Be responsible, throw them in the trash. To the guy jogging with the large white German shepherd in Los Jilgueros Preserve, thank you for leaving the fresh pile of dog poop on the trail. You and I were the only ones there, and your dog... Full story

  • Re: 'National news in the Village News' [Village News Letters, 5/28/20]

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

My reaction to Maggie Rogan’s criticism of The Village News and Julie Reeder’s response is simply this. We could not have a more honest, objective, creative, resourceful and enlightened publisher and journalist than Julie Reeder. I have lived in Fallbrook for 53 years, and the quality of our local newspaper could not be more professional. It strives to include every aspect of village life, and now strives to include important aspects of regional, state, national and international news, particularly for those who read no oth... Full story

  • A call for Americans to get a backbone and stand up

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

This is the time to stand up and say enough with the constant attacks on our American way of life and our president. It is time the left stops with their hateful attacks on our president and support everything he has done for this country. We have taken their bold lies, their crap, fake news, their corruption, their belligerence, their bullying, their insane political correctness and everything A to Z for years now. We are now watching President Donald Trump being bullied hourly. I was told I was racist because I didn’t a... Full story

  • What we know about the Chinese government

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

In December 2019, while most of the world was unaware of the impending virus that was about to sweep across seven continents, Beijing was busy trying to expand China’s national powers in Hong Kong. For years, the Chinese Communist government has been encroaching on the rights of the Hong Kong people with the full intent of abandoning the one nation two systems treaty mutually signed in 1997. Outraged by these authoritarian actions, hundreds of thousands of “Freedom Seeking Hong Kongers” took to the streets to resist the overr... Full story

  • Will rioters listen to George Floyd's brother?

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jun 4, 2020

This week has been horrific and unforgettable for everyone, starting with George Floyd’s family. With the nation in upheaval over the wrongful and murderous death of Floyd by a Minneapolis policeman, tensions and emotions are high. Very sadly, people have used this man’s death as an excuse to murder, loot, destroy and set their cities on fire, hurt local business owners and beat up senior citizens. Nine people have died so far. Those being hurt are not to blame, even if the... Full story

  • Questions on placing a childrens' park near seniors

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

Why? Why put an active park, with ballfields for children, with the drive thru-in a senior citizen community? Rancho Monserate has about 230 active elders driving their golf carts across Dulin Road to get to their golf course, tennis courts, pool (pre-COVID-19), clubhouse and other amenities. Why? Why not put an active park where the children are? Rancho Monserate is on the east side of I-15. The kids are on the west side. How many children are in Lake Rancho Viejo? How many in the new construction in Horse Creek? Why?... Full story

  • Re: 'National news in the Village News' [Village News, Letters, 5/28/20]

    Updated Jun 4, 2020

Dear Julie, I have also been a Fallbrook resident for over 20 years and have supported your newspaper, recognizing it as part of our responsibility to local community and events. I also enjoy reading the letters in the opinion section and both letters from Maggie Rogan and yourself found resonance with me for different reasons. As you mentioned, there is a need for national news but I find it increasingly difficult to form an opinion due to the many-sided perspectives that it can evoke. Is that necessarily bad? Probably not b... Full story

  • Protecting our most vulnerable

    Supervisor Jim Desmond|Updated Jun 4, 2020

5th District During the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been led by facts and data. While I’m pleased to see more businesses open, like hair salons and restaurants, there are many more that need to open. During this opening process we need to continue to be safe and smart about protecting our most vulnerable. As of May 27, 2020, 43% of the COVID-19 deaths in the United States occurred at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. In Minnesota, for example, a staggering 81% of all... Full story

  • Reply to National News in the Village News

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated May 28, 2020

Thanks Maggie, I really appreciate you taking the time to write, and I also appreciate the tone of your letter. I know you care about our community as much as I do. I also agree with you about dehumanizing. I hate to see that as well, which is why I personally chose early on to cover what was going on in Hong Kong and lately what has been happening with Lt. Gen. Flynn. I have to say, it is the first time I’ve been called a spokesperson for Fallbrook, though, I think I know w... Full story

  • I would like to address the "plan" you have given us as to how you would handle our current COVID-19 crisis.

    Updated May 28, 2020

It is interesting that you noted former President Barack Obama’s 2014 warning that there will be an airborne disease that we may have to deal with. That notice was also about the same time that Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health requested $3.7 million of taxpayer money to give to the Chinese virology lab in Wuhan, China, so they could continue their study of viruses. Then in 2016, the Obama administration gave us a 69-page “how to” book, plus a 2017 warning to President Donald Trump on handling a pande... Full story

  • Re: 'Do we permit a virus to destroy our economy?' [Village News, Walker Letter, 5/14/20]

    Updated May 28, 2020

Again with the personal attacks Mr. Walker. You do not know me or my nationality and your “white privilege” is nothing more than you white people feeling guilty about the atrocities that took place hundreds of years ago. Let it go. Maybe you had “white privilege” – that doesn’t really exist – but I grew up poor and on the wrong side of town so don’t dare disparage me. I never said anything about attending college. Again with the extreme. A basic high school graduation plus common sense will go a long way. Heck, there are... Full story

  • National news in the Village News

    Updated May 28, 2020

As a 20-year resident of our dear Fallbrook, I am so drawn to the sense of community that exists here. Things are not perfect, but when I meet a neighbor or someone at the grocery, I do not stop to think “are they a Republican or Democrat?” I value that feeling of camaraderie and acceptance. I believe that so many problems are accentuated right now because of the division in our country. We have lost the ability to communicate about our differences, and instead simply label people, groups, news outlets as either “for us” o... Full story

Our momentum is building, San Diego County! Thanks to your support, restaurants are open for dine-in and retail shops for in store shopping. Also, we’ve sent a proposed pilot program telling the governor we are ready to open personal salons, fitness facilities, outdoor religious services, homeowner association pools, therapeutic and peer support groups and modified youth sports. I want to keep pushing to open more, but it’s a start and our voices are being heard. I would love to see churches, amusement parks and many other bu... Full story

  • RMCC and the Rio Prado Park access

    Updated May 28, 2020

I feel that San Diego County Parks Department missed the mark when they planned access to the Rio Prado Park. Yes, of course, they took advantage of the existing Dulin Road from Old Highway 395 to the proposed park. Dulin Road has had a locked gate and has been virtually a dead end street for more than 40 years. It was designed for access to a rural senior community. Also, Rancho Monserate Country Club has taken on the responsibility of maintaining Dulin Road for all these years. Senior residents count on being able to cross... Full story
