  • Protecting public health

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron|Updated Feb 12, 2020

AD-75 (R) As a member of the Assembly Select Committee on Infectious Disease in High Risk Communities, I do all I can to ensure California remains at the forefront in combating serious threats to public health. Human-immunodeficiency virus, the hepatitis C virus and sexually transmitted diseases are among the most serious public health issues facing our state. That’s why I have joined Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, to co-author Senate Bill 859, requiring the d... Full story

  • FPUD and Rainbow make brave move to save ratepayers money

    Updated Feb 12, 2020

Over the holidays, I received a letter from the San Diego County Water Authority designed to make customers of Fallbrook Public Utility District and Rainbow Municipal Water District worry. The tone of the letter alluded that if the two districts de-annex from the Water Authority, the reliability of our water supply would be at risk and our water prices could go up. Since I have been to several community meetings where this change was discussed, I knew this insinuation was not true. FPUD and Rainbow have researched this option... Full story

  • Jones: Newsom and Democrat Legislative Leaders need to get serious about housing

    Updated Feb 12, 2020

SACRAMENTO – California Senate Caucus Chair Brian Jones, R-Santee, called on Gov. Gavin Newsom and his Democrat colleagues in the Senate and Assembly to abandon their “Sacramento knows best” approach to housing. “For the last year and half the Governor and Democrat legislative leaders have obsessed over SB 50 and its state mandate approach to housing,” Jones said. “In the end, the Democrat supermajority could barely convince even half of their rank and file members to support SB 50. “Right off the bat here’s three things to... Full story

  • AB 5 isn't working

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron|Updated Feb 6, 2020

AD-75 (R) This week I joined my colleagues to address a large crowd gathered on the Capitol steps to protest Assembly Bill 5, one of the most devastating pieces of legislation in California’s recent history. This ill-conceived attempt to deal with the problem of employee misclassification has jeopardized the livelihood and security of thousands. My office has received hundreds of phone calls, emails and letters opposing AB 5 from a broad cross section of workers, including U... Full story

  • Requiring public vote will likely increase backcountry development

Joe Naiman, Village News Reporter|Updated Feb 6, 2020

San Diego County voters will be considering a measure to require a public vote on general plan amendments which do not meet size, village location or housing need exemptions. The goal of the initiative is to preserve the backcountry from development. The requirement of a public vote is the worst way to achieve that. If developers are forced to undergo a public vote, they will likely go directly to the ballot through the initiative process and bypass the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and the county Planning... Full story

  • Re: "Real Estate Round-Up: SOS – Vote wisely [Village News, Kim Murphy column, 12/19/19]

    Updated Feb 6, 2020

While Ms. Murphy is entitled to her opinions, there are many factual ‘escapes’ in her article. Yes, I’m being polite. Ms. Murphy makes this statement early on: The current language approved by the county counsel stated: “Shall this initiative be adopted for the purpose of amending the county general plan to require voter approval through 2038 of any general plan amendments which increase residential density in all areas designated rural and semi-rural, subject to very limited exceptions, permanently prohibit density transfe...

  • Brian Jones leads Senate reps in defeating SB 50 again

    Updated Feb 6, 2020

SACRAMENTO – California Caucus Chair Brian Jones, R-Santee, rallied the majority of his caucus to withhold support for Senate Bill 50 on the Senate Floor, Jan. 31. It was the second vote in two days that the Senate took on SB 50. The measure failed by identical 18-15 votes on consecutive days, with 14 of the 29 Senate Democrats also unwilling to support SB 50. “Rather than the stale strategy of forcing state mandates onto local governments and California homeowners, perhaps the governor and legislative Democrat leaders wil... Full story

  • Human trafficking – Too close for comfort

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, Special to Village News|Updated Feb 2, 2020

Earlier this session I spoke on the Assembly Floor on House Resolution 7 that I jointly wrote with Assembly member Eloise Gómez Reyes, D-San Bernardino. HR 7 declares January Human Trafficking Awareness Month in California, part of a nationwide effort to combat this growing menace. A form of modern slavery, human trafficking has grown 842% in the United States since 2007. Worldwide, there are over 40 million victims of human trafficking, 75% of the victims are women and... Full story

  • Re: 'Real Estate Round-Up: SOS – Vote wisely' [Village News, Voges Letter, 1/9/20]

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

Dear Ms. Voges, Since you do not know me, your accusations of my motives are based on absolutely nothing other than the fact that I am a licensed real estate broker. That would be akin to accusing a dentist of opposing a new law that prevented thousands of patients from receiving adequate dental care, as self-serving. The facts of Measure A were accurately spelled out in my article, so I will not reiterate them, except to restate that the people who will suffer the most if Measure A were to pass are middle class workforce... Full story

  • Re: 'California, the new age of Enlightenment?' [Village News, Letter, 1/23/20]

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

As I read Mr. Maynard’s letter “California, the new age of Enlightenment,” I am cutting it out and mailing it to my cousin to prove that I am not the last conservative left in California; that has been an ongoing joke for so many years. What a refreshing newsworthy letter to read. The sad thing is every word is true and such a shame we have come to where we are now with the overwhelming results of what happens when liberals take over with what was once the American dream in California. Over the last 30-plus years I have... Full story

  • Groups endorse Measure A

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

Fallbrook Climate Action Team joins the Sierra Club San Diego Chapter and Climate Action Campaign in endorsing Measure A. Living in unincorporated San Diego County, we know firsthand the danger of building sprawl developments in the back country. Some people lost their homes in the Lilac Fire. Others had to evacuate. This time we all made it, but in Paradise people died on the narrow roads. We know too well the congestion on Highways 15, 76, 78 and 5. We are aware that San Diego County has not decreased greenhouse gas... Full story

  • Re: In split vote, Fallbrook Union Elementary board approves raises for superintendent, other administrators [Village News website, 1/24/20]

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

I am disappointed by the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District’s 4-1 decision Jan. 21, to not separate agenda item V.2. Action: Salary Increase for Management, Confidential and Unrepresented Employees into separate items for voting. Having done so would have provided the transparency and accountability required to make the fiscally and ethically responsible decisions these items deserve. The manner in which this decision was made is very concerning. As a result, our superintendent was given yet another salary increase o... Full story

  • Programs for homeless need to be effective

    Jim Desmond, Fifth District|Updated Feb 2, 2020

Homelessness in California is at extremely high levels and San Diego, while better than San Francisco and Los Angeles, has a steadily rising homeless population. Last week, I partnered with Supervisor Jacob on addressing the homeless population in San Diego’s unincorporated area. In our Board Letter, I’ve asked county staff to take a look at existing buildings, which could be used for transitional housing. Also, the county will be adding four additional deputies to the HART program. The value of human life must always be a f... Full story

  • A thank you for donors of shoebox gifts

    Updated Feb 2, 2020

I am writing to thank Fallbrook residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season. Because of the generosity of donors in Fallbrook and across the United States, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more than 8.9 million shoebox gifts in 2019. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2019, the ministry is now sending 10,569,405 shoebox gifts to children worldwide. Through shoeboxes – packed with fun toys, school supplies and... Full story

  • Reduce backcountry fire hazards

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, Special to Valley News|Updated Jan 25, 2020

It’s easier to prevent wildfires than to control them once they’ve started. That’s why I introduced Assembly Bill 19, which will provide $25 million for vegetation management along county-maintained roads. Auto-related wildfires are a major problem in California. In 2016 and 2017, almost 25% of local wildfires were vehicle-related. The Carr Fire, the state’s seventh largest, began when sparks from a flat tire ignited brush along a highway in Northern California. The fire ki... Full story

  • Re: 'Pro-Life is a killer' [Village News, Miller Letter, 1/16/20]

    Updated Jan 24, 2020

As I said before, America’s abysmal infant and maternal mortality rates are the direct result of reduction in reproductive health care caused by the “slash and burn” tactics used by pro-life activists. As usual, the brunt of the damage is taken by lower- and middle-income women. The statistics are normalized: all countries are evaluated by the same standard. The bottom line is mother’s-to-be and infants are “collateral damage” in the war on abortion. Why did Margaret Sanger’s son lie about her converting to Christianity?... Full story

  • A sincere thank you

    Updated Jan 24, 2020

The “Grinch” made a good try at stealing our Christmas by way of killing our furnace, Dec. 20. A panicked call to Luke of Quality Heating and Cooling brought him right over, and yes, it was indeed dead as the proverbial door nail. But all was not lost because, like the best Santa’s Helper Ever, but taller and without the silly hat and shoes, Luke reappeared at 8 a.m. on Christmas Eve and by noon we had a new furnace, and glorious, wonderful heat. And, he even built a new wood furnace floor to replace the one that had seen... Full story

  • California, the new age of Enlightenment?

    Updated Jan 24, 2020

Coming of age for me in the mid-60s in California was a little bit like, "Happy Days," with a whole lot of "American Graffiti" and "Big Wednesday" mixed in. Back then we were the envy of the country and the epicenter of the "American Dream." Tens of thousands of Americans came to California drawn by their collective belief that they could overcome their humble beginnings. We had little crime, mathematically insignificant homeless population, and a small undocumented population as well. Life for all Californians was safe,... Full story

  • Drug use has consequences

    Updated Jan 24, 2020

For the last decade artists in the music industry have glorified drug use without making a mention of the consequences that they really cause. It went from glorifying drug dealing to glorifying the use of codeine, molly, weed, OxyContin, cocaine, you name it, and it’s referenced in at least one of your favorite artists songs. In the past 10 years, there have been a number of drug overdose deaths in the industry. From Mac Miller to Lil Peep, Whitney Houston, Prince, Tom Petty, Juice World, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson and R... Full story

  • What county supervisors do

    Supervisor Jim Desmond|Updated Jan 24, 2020

5th District As we are now fully in 2020, I thought this would be a great time to talk about the current status of San Diego County. One of the questions I get asked most when I’m out is, what does a supervisor supervise? Well, there are five San Diego County supervisors, and we are in charge of a variety of things from public health, food stamps, Registrar of Voters and many other items. We also manage state and federal money for local programs. I have the privilege of not o...

  • The biggest mistake parents make when it comes to education

    Updated Jan 24, 2020

This National School Choice Week, Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, I want to share with you one of the most common short-circuits that parents run into when choosing the right school for their child. That way, if you see it coming, you can run the other way. It starts with a thought like this: “Do I as a parent really know best about my child’s education? After all, I don’t have a graduate degree in education. There’s a lot of school jargon I’m not sure about. Should I let more equipped people make the calls about where and how my child...

  • Re: 'Pro-Life is a killer'[Village News, Terrell Letter, 1/9/20]

    Updated Jan 20, 2020

This is my last rebuttal to this issue as it has become tired now and it's time to move on to more important issues like the Dog & Pony show over a fake impeachment proceeding. 1. While the CDC website is an interesting read on the subject it is not a good case for abortion. Read for yourself. They also factor in SID babies who are born just fine, so the numbers are skewed. 2. & 3. I witnessed the interview with Margaret Sanger's son and believe what he states...why would he lie? So calling it false doesn't make it so. Eugeni...

  • $90 Million for bike lanes!?

    Supervisor Jim Desmond|Updated Jan 20, 2020

Fifth District This past Friday, common sense went out the window. At a meeting to determine the future of transportation dollars, the SANDAG Board of Directors voted to allocate $90 million for bike lanes in San Diego County. While I like bikes, most people use them recreationally. Despite less than 1% of San Diegans using bikes as their primary transportation, bike lanes are being built around San Diego County at $5.5 million per mile! Meanwhile, we’ve been told by S...
