  • San Diego is the new epicenter

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated May 2, 2024

San Diego is the new epicenter for migrants and illegal immigration. Last week alone, Border Patrol apprehended 9,000 illegal border crossers within the San Diego sector, including 206 Chinese nationals. This surge in illegal crossings has propelled San Diego to the unfortunate position of leading all nine southern border sectors in April, a trend unseen since the 1990s. Since Oct. 1, the San Diego sector has witnessed a staggering 214,855 apprehensions, representing... Full story

  • Update: No more SVPs for rural San Diego County

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th District|Updated May 2, 2024

As you know, the placement of Sexually Violent Predators in rural areas of California, including San Diego County, has been an ongoing problem. SVPs have been placed in Jacumba Hot Springs, Campo, Boulevard, Borrego Springs and other locations, often near homes, parks and schools. Currently, the Department of State Hospitals oversees placement and contracts with Liberty Healthcare, which then seeks court approval. Courts sometimes intervene to deny inappropriate placements,... Full story

  • Exciting days are here

    Updated May 2, 2024

A pack of activities come for juniors and seniors now. For instance, Fallbrook High School will have Prom on May 4. I missed many teenage joys, like prom, because a drunk driver hit me when I was 16 in 1992. I graduated in 1993 in a wheelchair with hearing difficulties. After 32 years, my hearing is still damaged and I can walk as best as I can. I am used to my daily challenges but I am trying to prevent others from facing this. No one wants to live with these difficulties: I guarantee that. Believing you can drive like a... Full story

  • Re: Re: 'The climes they are a-changin'' [Village News, Lewis Letter, 4/18/24]

    Updated May 2, 2024

Only in America is Global Warming a political issue. That’s because only America has a political party that politicizes everything, with emphasis on anything that clashes with their anti-science and technology stance. And that is despite the fact that America rose to be a global power house largely because of its full embrace of science and technology. Former President Trump denounced Global Warming as a “Chinese hoax.” It’s obvious Mr. Lewis buys into that misinformation and is ignorant of the scientific method and the rol... Full story

  • Carlsbad boat drops

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Apr 24, 2024

Last week, I stood alongside the Mayors of Carlsbad, Vista, and San Marcos and the Deputy Mayor of Oceanside to address a pressing concern that affects us all: illegal immigration and maritime smuggling. Just this past Saturday, another incident unfolded as a boat raced into our shoreline, endangering surfers, swimmers, and our community. Ten individuals disembarked, fled into a Carlsbad neighborhood, and were whisked away in an SUV. What's deeply troubling is that we do not... Full story

  • Rebuilding California cities

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th District|Updated Apr 24, 2024

In 2011, the legislature worked in an effort to abolish California’s Redevelopment Districts. Although some RDAs were poorly managed, their abolition deprived cities of an important tool that had often been successfully used to stimulate business, create new housing and revitalize blighted areas, especially for older cities Last Week, the Assembly Local Government Committee, on which I serve as Vice Chair, passed Assembly bill 2945 (AB 2945) introduced by Assemblyman David A... Full story

  • Opinion: Murrieta School board votes to uphold Parental Rights

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Apr 24, 2024

In a recent defiant move against state directives, the Murrieta Valley Unified School Board in Southern California has stood firm in its decision to retain a policy requiring parental notification if a student wishes to identify as transgender, becomes suicidal or is involved in violence. This act of resistance, fueled by a commitment to parental involvement and local autonomy, is a reminder of the rightful authority school boards wield in shaping educational policies... Full story

  • Re: 'Higher wages bring layoff' [Village News, Letter, 4/11/24]

    Updated Apr 24, 2024

My lifetime friend Rod Smith who lives in Fallbrook shared the article "Higher wages brings layoffs," a very well written and factual article by the way. Rod asked for my thoughts and I sent the email below to him. Upon reading my email Rod asked me to submit my email to your paper. So here is what a small business owner and entrepreneur thinks. A new policy of any sort is spun with the idea of good intentions with politicians knowing full well or even denying what the actual results will be. Whoever proposes such ideas... Full story

  • Re: 'Get Out the Vote' [Village News, Letter, 4/18/24]

    Updated Apr 24, 2024

The country needs your vote. Only twice have I ever agreed with Mr. Terrell (I don't remember the first), but I do agree with "Get Out the Vote." This is the most important election of our lifetime. I am voting for President Trump for the following reasons. It is to support the First Amendment and free speech; however, I feel like the far left activists are taking great advantage of that amendment with their hate speech. "Death to America" is taking free speech too far. I'm voting for the Second Amendment and my right to defe... Full story

  • Re: 'Blanket Project helps the less fortunate' [Village News, 4/4/24]

    Updated Apr 24, 2024

Thank you so much for the wonderful front page picture and article! I am sorry to take so long in thanking you but the publicity has created more "business" for me and, along with preparing for a rare visit from our Vermont daughter and family, I have been overwhelmed. We have also responded to a request to teach crocheting at the high school as a new after school activity. Busy, busy. I was contacted to pick up a new yarn donation which has ended in helping a 77 year old combat veteran clear out his home of his wife's many... Full story

  • A question for voters

    Updated Apr 24, 2024

California’s population last year was 38.9 million, hardly changed from 38.3 million a decade earlier. Yet in those 10 years, our state budget more than tripled in size – growing from $91 billion to $301 billion. That unprecedented increase in spending has not only failed to achieve anything meaningful in our lives, but by most measures, we’re worse off. Compared to other states, we pay among the highest income tax, highest capital gains tax, highest gasoline tax, highest sales tax when local rates are included with the s... Full story

Thank you Lucette, Julie and Team for the nice article in the paper. Our kids loved it! Their parents were so surprised and the office manager at La Paloma texted me. Updated Apr 17, 2024

SACRAMENTO – The Senate Public Safety Committee unanimously approved Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones’s (R-San Diego) bipartisan Senate Bill 1074, called the “Sexually Violent Predator Accountability, Fairness, and Enforcement Act” (SAFE Act), April 9. “The SAFE Act is designed to protect our neighborhoods and families from dangerous sexually violent predators, perpetrators of some of the most horrendous and violent sex crimes,” said Jones. “We are thankful that the Senate Public Safety Committee understands the need to... Full story

  • We stopped the fixed-rate electricity proposal

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Apr 17, 2024

I wanted to share some good news regarding our ongoing battle for fair electricity rates. You may recall the recent uproar surrounding the proposed changes to the fixed rate portion of our SDG&E electric bills. Many of you joined me in expressing concern about the unfairness of tying this fee to household income rather than actual electricity usage. Your voices were heard loud and clear, and I am thrilled to report that our pressure has made a difference. Thanks to the... Full story

  • Kids and social media

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th District|Updated Apr 17, 2024

Millions of children and young adults throughout the nation are active social media users. Last week two bills dealing with social media’s impact on child and adolescent mental health passed the Assembly Health Committee. Worldwide, there are 34 social media platforms, with at least 100 million users. According to a U.S. Surgeon General’s report last year, 95% of teens aged 13 to 17 use social media, and more than one in three report they use it “almost constantly.” Most so... Full story

  • Re: 'State works to better adapt to extreme dry, wet conditions' [Village News, 4/4/24]

    Updated Apr 17, 2024

I've just read "State works to better adapt to extreme dry/wet conditions." Wet indeed. Lots of talk about "pulling the agencies together is lots of work" and other double talk about fees and property taxes. Water, like air, should be free. That's why I hyperventilate at water board meetings. It's free. You and I and anyone can have all the water one needs for personal use and even for larger farms and groves, you're breathing it now! The water is derived from the atmosphere by machines called "Atmospheric Water Generators."... Full story

  • Let's get out the vote

    Updated Apr 17, 2024

You’re reading the Village News; odds are that means you’re a voter. Unfortunately a large percentage of vote-eligible citizens regularly decline to exercise that right (and responsibility). But the 2024 Presidential Election will put our future as a democracy on the line. No one should sit this one out. So, let’s all work to get a super turnout to defend our democracy in no uncertain terms. The Republican Party has chosen Donald Trump as their candidate. I’m surprised that the party’s billionaire supporters allowed t... Full story

  • Protecting Our Children: From Hollywood to the local school board

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Apr 17, 2024

In the midst of celebrity glamor, there is a sinister underbelly that threatens the innocence of our children. Recent events involving high-profile figures like P. Diddy Combs have brought to light disturbing truths – a world where exploitation of the vulnerable and abuse of power are all too real, not only with underage young women and men, but with adult men and women as well. Party goers were given drugs without their knowledge and consent and when they didn’t have any pre... Full story

In a press release from the Fallbrook Fire Safe Council, “Chipping Day helps make Fallbrook fire safe,” published in the April 4 issue of the Village News, it misquoted John Duling as saying he lost his home in the 2002 Gavilan fire. His home did not burn but many of his neighbors lost their homes then.... Full story

Health disparities impacting American Indian and Alaska Native communities include opioid overdose death rates, which are higher among the AIAN population than any other group. • Higher wages bring layoffs

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Apr 12, 2024

Pizza Hut announced it would lay off over 1000 workers after the $20 an hour minimum wage increase. Foster’s Freeze shut down several stores. Other chains are either raising prices or cutting staff. Those consequences couldn’t have been unintended, right? More layoffs are likely imminent. It seems like a nice thing to do for the fast food workers, but the outcome may actually be that they may lose their jobs altogether. It just seems that the more the government int... Full story

    Updated Apr 12, 2024

John Terrell's letters typically involve pushing the Left's talking points. His latest one is about man-made global warming, an emergency according to much of the mainstream media. This was promoted 20 years ago by Al Gore (a major fossil-fuel hypocrite who famously claimed to have created the internet) who told everyone to quit debating a problem that is "settled science." The unfortunate reality for Democrats is that the man-made global warming hysteria has been fizzling out. It may still upset teenagers or college... Full story

  • Implementing a pilot program to enhance support for people with serious mental illness at affordable housing developments

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Apr 12, 2024

The issue of homelessness is not just about lacking shelter; it's about individuals grappling with mental illness. In our pursuit of solutions, it is crucial to recognize that a significant portion of the homeless population is affected by Serious Mental Illness (SMI), with estimates suggesting that 21% fall into this category. Placing individuals with SMI in environments ill-equipped to meet their needs not only undermines their potential for success but also poses risks to... Full story

First of all, I am a lazy person. And let me assure you, retirement hasn’t made me any less lazy. As it turns out, I have actually developed it into a skill set. And it seems, I am very good at it! This doing nothing. Which has given me way too much time to watch TV. Which leads me to the second most glaring truth. Why does every person from news anchors to game show contestants sport Dudley-Do-Right-Dazzling-Hollywood-White smiles? It seems sparkly-white choppers are the n... Full story
