  • Disappointing vote

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Feb 9, 2024

A few weeks ago, I shared the unfortunate news that a judge deemed a Sexually Violent Predator, Alvin Quarles, for placement back into San Diego County. For over three years, Mr. Quarles terrorized our communities, committing heinous acts of rape against a dozen women. Last week, we had a Board meeting and I brought forward an item to support Congressman Darrell Issa's federal legislation, "Stopping Sexually Violent Predators Act." This bill would prevent Sexually Violent... Full story

  • The Compromised Plate: A call for real food over drugs

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Feb 9, 2024

As a person who has struggled for decades with my weight, I have been researching the latest wonder drug for weight loss: Ozempic (semaglutide). I have seen doctors support it and say it is the way of the future. I have seen endorsements explaining that excess weight is not “your fault.” Of course, that resonates with me, because I certainly don’t want it to be my fault. But somehow I don’t believe that, and I know that the healthier I eat and the more I walk and exercis... Full story

  • Re: 'The WHO wants to remove your rights and sovereignty [Village News, Reeder letter, 1/18/24]

    Updated Feb 1, 2024

After the end of a college semester on Nazism many decades ago, my professor concluded with this chilling statement: “And this is what the Nazis accomplished – without computers.” In today’s world of theatrical politics and troubled times, many of us are nervously scanning the horizon for the next flamboyant manifestation of a Hitler or Stalin, but our search will be in vain. Computers have now arrived, and so too has a new form of Authoritarianism, deceptively dressed in a dull techno-bureaucratic garb. This techno-... Full story

  • Re: "Writer ponders public transport…" [Village News, 1/18/24]

    Updated Feb 1, 2024

Thank you, Tim O’Leary, for your thought-provoking article in last week's Village News. As an English country girl born-and-bred, for the first 20 years of my life I took local bus transportation for granted. Very few of us had access to any motorized vehicle until we were well beyond puberty, and most women of my mother’s generation never learned to drive, so I always took public transportation (busses and trains) for granted. When my late husband and I emigrated to California, that changed rapidly – and I rather reluctantly... Full story

  • Mental health priorities

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th District|Updated Feb 1, 2024

In 1967, many state hospitals serving persons with mental illnesses were closed, but local programs to address their needs were inadequate. In 1991, oversight of mental healthcare was placed under county control, but by 2004 it was evident that this realignment hadn’t improved the situation. In 2004, voters approved Proposition 63, the California Mental Health Services Act (MHSA). The MHSA focuses on developing programs aimed at prevention and early intervention, housing, supp... Full story

  • Echos from the past: today's "Know Nothing Party"

    Updated Feb 1, 2024

The recent vitriolic editorials by Joe Schembri and David Felker clearly reflect the distorted views of today’s Trumpian Republican Party. Their diatribes remind me of the outcries of the fear mongering ideological nativist party of the mid-1850s, the “Know Nothings.” The Know Nothing Party was a nativist political movement which emerged in this country in the early 1850s. Officially it was first known as the Nativist American Party before 1855 and later became known as the “American Party” – echoes of the Trumpian sl... Full story

  • The rising tide of Marxism in America

    Updated Feb 1, 2024

It was a balmy morning, not unlike most summer days in the Windy City, with light winds blowing off Lake Michigan. The year was 1968; the Beatles had just released their White Album. The DNC was poised to select their presidential candidate at their national convention, and our nation was embroiled in an embittered war in the jungles of Indochina, nearly nine thousand miles away. Outside the convention doors were militant factions from the Students for a Democratic Society, the Chicago Seven, and other loosely affiliated... Full story

  • Jacarandas are not native

    Updated Feb 1, 2024

This is an open letter to Save our Forest. Please stop planting jacaranda trees in Fallbrook. They are not native to California. They are dirty trees. The leaf shed is astronomical. Who is going to clean that up? SOF has planted jacaranda trees by Fallbrook Cafe on Brandon which has a creek next to it. That leaf shed will clog the waterway. The new bus stop is located there. I cannot imagine the messy disaster of waiting at that bus stop. Now I'm reading that Save our Forest has planted jacaranda trees on Pico Promenade,... Full story

  • Lopez, Phillips place at Jim Londos Memorial

Joe Naiman, Village News Reporter|Updated Jan 25, 2024

The Jim Londos Memorial wrestling tournament was held Jan. 13 at Orange Glen High School, and two Fallbrook High School wrestlers placed. Ricardo Lopez earned fifth place in the 108-pound bracket. Fisher Phillips took sixth among 140-pound wrestlers. Fallbrook coach Tom Brockson entered three wrestlers in the Temecula Valley Battle for the Belt tournament Jan. 12-13 at Temecula Valley High School and three grapplers in the Jim Londos Memorial. Fallbrook also had a dual meet... Full story

  • A letter to Phyllis and Jack,

    Updated Jan 25, 2024

In 2022, as the world started waking up from the covid shutdown, I reached out to my friend Phyllis from Fallbrook. We had not spoken for a few months. I had been busy getting my daughter into college, navigating a military move during a pandemic, and still nursing my youngest. Phyllis was just as busy. She and Jack had a special network of friends, and she was deeply involved in her grandchildren’s lives. Phyllis was a fairy godmother, breezing through her days spreading love and kindness to all the children and animals in h... Full story

  • Another sexually violent predator

    Superviser Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jan 25, 2024

It is with profound disappointment and deep concern that I express my opposition to the decision allowing the placement of Sexually Violent Predator Alvin Quarles, also known as the "Bolder than Most" rapist, back into San Diego County. The judge's decision is devastating for our community, and I strongly believe there is no place for such a monstrous individual in our midst. For over three years, Mr. Quarles terrorized our communities, committing heinous acts of rape against a dozen women. His behavior's consistent and... Full story

  • Re: 'Regarding a coordinated attack by the left' [Village News, Schembri letter, 1/18/24]

    Updated Jan 25, 2024

Another word salad from this writer seething with anger and vitriol, no surprises on that front, but the worrisome threat to “Remember these names for future reference” certainly gives one pause. To what “future reference” is the writer referring? Are these folks to be targeted for their views upon a (God help us) return of Trump and a dictatorial right-wing regime in Washington, turned in by their neighbors to the thought police by people like this letter writer? The not-so-veiled threats implied with this letter are of... Full story

  • Kicking It without high heels

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal, Special to The Village News|Updated Jan 25, 2024

It has finally happened. Alas, it’s time to pay the Piper and just live with the consequence of my actions. After 30 years in sales, my legs and feet are racked with pain. In my defense, Sales is all about having a leg up (no pun intended) on the consumer. It starts with first impressions. What I call the “10-second rule.” It’s simple. Everyone is judged by the people we meet. And when selling a product, one needs to have an advantage, real or imagined, to write-t... Full story

  • Re: 'Looking Back at 2023' [Village News, Maynard letter, 01/11/24]

    Updated Jan 25, 2024

Here I am wasting my precious time responding to your rant in the opinion section of the Jan 11 newspaper. Why? Because it left me completely gobsmacked. You might seek help for addiction to MAGgot Kool-aid. I hear psychedelics are promising in treating addiction, too bad they don’t help with hate. How is it I can claim you are off the rails? Your first paragraph blaming President Joe Biden “for global hostility.” Really? Last time I checked he was only responsible for this country, but like all brainwashed MAGgots, you l... Full story

  • How pervasive is voter fraud?

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jan 25, 2024

I’m not sure. It’s taking a bit of research to find out. I want to give one website that I found which had a surprising number of lawsuits, etc. proving that there is definitely a problem and it’s across the country. Here is the link in case you want to get a headstart on the piece for next week: https://www.heritage.org/voterfraud It’s the Heritage Foundation website and in a sampling of cases across the country, there are 1500 proven instances of Voter Fraud, 1276 Crimina... Full story

  • Opposition to Bonsall Community Park

    Updated Jan 25, 2024

Dear Friends – Jim Desmond and Mark Kieser continue to ignore the Bonsall Community Sponsor Group (BCSG) and Bonsall residents. The BCSG requested in several, separate meetings that Desmond and Kieser move all the high activities to the Del Prado Park and Mark Kieser said no! There are two parks in Bonsall, (1) Bonsall Community Park (BCG) on Camino Del Rey and (2) Del Prado Park (DPP) off the 76. The DPP is the better location for a highly active park for high activities like soccer, skate boarding and baseball. Located j... Full story

  • Re: 'Looking Back at 2023' Part 1, [Village News. Maynard Letter, 1/11 /24]

    Updated Jan 25, 2024

Maynard’s latest screed is 789 words long! They are all actual words, and the sentences are grammatically correct. But the end result is simply and totally claptrap. One of his two main themes is: President Biden is not only seditious; he is head of a mafia-type family engaged in every conceivable type of criminality. Many words later, He gives kudos to Rep. James Comer for “exposing Biden’s seditious behavior.” Whoa! Comer has done nothing of the kind. He initiated impeachment proceedings against President Biden on Sept. 12,... Full story

  • Preparing for Wildfires

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th District|Updated Jan 25, 2024

I recently joined several legislators to tour the site of the Camp Fire, the deadliest wildfire disaster in 100 years, which struck much of Butte County in 2018. The fire resulted in 85 deaths, covered almost 240 square miles, and almost totally destroyed the towns of Paradise, Concow and other communities. Sadly, this tragic death toll was surpassed in 2023 by fires that engulfed Maui, with almost 100 dead and many still missing. Our region is no stranger to wildfires. Most... Full story

  • Free healthcare

    Supervisor Jim Desmond, 5th District|Updated Jan 18, 2024

With the chaos continuing, I'm highly displeased to see the State roll out a program incentivizing more people to enter the country illegally. Beginning Jan. 1, the State of California is giving free healthcare to undocumented immigrants. Against numerous challenges in California with a staggering homeless population, the highest gas prices in the country, exorbitant utility costs, crumbling infrastructure, and while facing a $68 billion budget deficit, the decision for free... Full story

  • Supporting California's native wildlife

    Updated Jan 18, 2024

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District I introduced AB 1031 in 2017 to establish the Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. The legislation allows taxpayers filing their returns to voluntarily ‘check off’ a specified amount to fund wildlife rescue organizations throughout the state. However, since the program expires this year, last week I introduced AB 1828 so that the voluntary wildlife rehab fund can continue until 2032. Since 2018, taxpayers have contributed $2 million through the... Full story

  • Fallbrook gasoline prices

    Updated Jan 18, 2024

Okay, I understand that the local Fallbrook retailers want you to shop in Fallbrook to support them and being a long time Fallbrook resident, I am all for that. The one exception to that is that I don't like getting gouged when I shop at certain Fallbrook retailers, in this case the gas stations. About five days ago, I purchased regular gasoline in Fallbrook at a price of $5.18 per gallon but a couple of days later when I drove eight miles to Oceanside, I found two gas stations that had regular gasoline priced at $3.99 and... Full story

  • The World Health Organization wants to remove your rights and sovereignty

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Jan 18, 2024

While people argue and divide themselves into “groups” here in the U.S., over elections and other important issues, there is a larger issue going on with the World Health Organization (WHO), which we have covered before. It may not make much difference who is in the White House, or maybe it will be the life or death of our Constitutional rights and our sovereignty. The WHO would like to take away our American God-given rights of free speech and bodily autonomy and bring the... Full story

  • Re: 'The world is changing. The GOP isn't [Village News, Letter, 1/4/24]

    Updated Jan 18, 2024

John Terrell's effort to define Republican beliefs is like Harvey Weinstein defining workplace dating etiquette. He would be better served working to remove the plank from the Democratic party's eyes before accusing Republicans of shortcomings. Democrats believe that society is responsible for crime, rather than holding criminals responsible for their own behavior. Defunding the police, no cash bail and $950 free stealing were always bad ideas, despite enthusiastic support from numerous prominent Democrats. Democrats are for... Full story

  • Regarding a coordinated attack by the left

    Updated Jan 18, 2024

I am using one letter to address the obviously coordinated attacks by far left radicals whose hate for Trump is surpassed only by their hatred for America. To include Mr. Terrell, L. Kendall, J. Lucore and G. Mitchell (Remember these names for future reference). First, let’s clarify the term Jan. 6th. It should be called the Reichstag II (or 2.0). It was a copy of what the Nazis did as Hitler sought power. They burned the German capital (Reichstag) and blamed it on the Communists. The gullible German people believed them, a... Full story
