  • San Diego is a military town

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District San Diego County is home to one of the nation’s largest populations of veterans. As of 2021, more than 200,000 veterans call San Diego County their home. Although San Diego County is historically known as a military town, our veteran unemployment numbers are higher compared to other counties. As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, I’ve made it a priority to do all we can for those who protect our country. Last month, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed an effort to increase rec... Full story

  • Nonprofits are a crucial part of Fallbrook and Village News editorial

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

There are almost 200 local nonprofit organizations and we are so thankful for the work they do. Local organizations are helping the hungry, the seniors, the veterans, the homeless, youth, the physically challenged, the emotionally challenged, the animals, artists, our parks and open spaces and even businesses. There’s literally something for everyone and much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Season. If you are new to town, please reference your 2022 Sourcebook Magazine and find the nonprofit organization listings and e... Full story

  • Re: 'Singh settlement amount nearly $400,000' [Village News, 11/10/22]

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Let me be clear about one thing – What happened with Dr. Candace Singh is not a good thing for FUESD, but it is of her making and has been in the making for years, with the support of the former board, of which Caron Lieber was also a member albeit in the minority. And it should be known that Dr. Singh’s negotiated exit package is a complete lack of respect and regard for the children and their families she claimed to be so “passionate” about serving and a super middle-finger to the community of Fallbrook, not to mention... Full story

  • Writer returns to fold after journey through the Valley

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Tim O’Leary Special to the Village News Hello, dear reader. It is wonderful, yet a bit daunting, to walk again in your midst. The good Lord has carried me through the Valley of the Shadow, and now I am back, either to your pleasure or your chagrin. A few of you may remember me from Temecula’s glory days. That was when a growth-choked and traffic-snarled burg in southwest Riverside County was anchored by a cadre of volunteers who latched onto a huge parcel of developer-donated land. Those hearty souls – with just their tract... Full story

  • Ahrens: Christian nationalism isn't Christianity

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

The headline above is part of the title of an article by Tim Ahrens that appeared in the Columbus Dispatch (8 Nov 2022). This is the gist of the article: "Christian nationalists falsely teach that there is no separation of church and state – and that conservative Christians should seize complete power by any means necessary." Tim Ahrens is the senior minister at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Downtown Columbus. And why is this relevant? Because this mix of faux religion and power politics is precisely what T... Full story

Assemblymember Marie Waldron District 75 Thanks to support from voters like you, I have been re-elected to serve the people of San Diego County's 75th Assembly District. The boundary lines have changed and I have many new constituents along with many continuing constituents. I am honored by your support and... Full story

  • Re: 'Indeed a sad chapter for FUESD' [Village News, Letter, 12/10/22]

    Updated Nov 17, 2022

Thank you, Julie Reeder, for your balanced and honest assessment regarding the settlement given by FUESD to the departing superintendent, Candace Singh. You have reported on these events over time and definitely are aware of related past concerns. Even you received negativity from FUESD administration for questioning decisions. Caron Lieber got hit with a lawsuit and threats of another one just for upholding her duties as an elected trustee! Although I have previously taken exception to some of your editorials about national... Full story

  • Senator Jones earns perfect score on legislation affecting small businesses and their employees

    Updated Nov 17, 2022

El CAJON – In its recent “CalChamber Vote Record,” the California Chamber of Commerce announced that Senator Brian W. Jones (R-Santee) was the only State Senator to receive a perfect score, concurring with the Chamber’s position on 15 major jobs, business, and economy related measures during the 2021-22 legislative session. “Senator Brian Jones has always been a solid vote for creating and saving jobs, fighting against burdensome regulations, and strengthening California businesses,” stated Marty Wilson, executive v... Full story

  • Kicking It with my stuff

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal, Special to The Village News|Updated Nov 17, 2022

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News George Carlin said it best in his bit about “Stuff.” Paraphrasing him, we’d all agree that my stuff is good, while your stuff isn’t. Which is why I wondered when driving past a neighbor’s house, if they were having a party? I mean, the drive was lined with newish cars while the open- garage door revealed it to be overflowing with a lot of stuff. I cannot help but wonder why anyone can justify parking a $40,000, $50,000,... Full story

  • Dear U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

    Updated Nov 17, 2022

Last week, your agency announced planned “public engagement and input opportunities” for EPA programs funded by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. As you may already know, America's national debt is well above $31 trillion and counting and so much of this profligate government spending has fueled U.S. inflation. As such, the best way that the EPA can spend taxpayer funds from the 2022 IRA is to simply transfer these IRA funds directly to the U.S. Treasury as a payment to reduce the public debt. Here is the website: htt... Full story

  • Four more years, thanks to you!

    Updated Nov 17, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District With the initial votes in, I can confidently say, I will be the Supervisor of District 5 for another four years. I have always said I will do this job if the residents of North County want me to continue and I am looking forward to building on the progress we have made over the past four years. While we’ve accomplished a lot in the past four years, including opening three crisis stabilization units, building One Safe Place, a center for those suffering from violence and keeping the m... Full story

  • Funding fentanyl education

    Updated Nov 10, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District It’s no secret that opioids are killing Americans at an alarming rate, specifically fentanyl. In 2021, more than 900 San Deigans died from opioid-related accidental overdoses, a 54% increase from the previous year. Over 6,000 pounds of fentanyl was seized in San Diego County last year alone, which would be enough to kill 1.4 billion people. I have made fentanyl awareness and education a top priority. We’ve declared it a crisis, funded education efforts targeting young people, held an ele... Full story

  • Changes are coming

    Updated Nov 10, 2022

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District Redistricting has rearranged legislative boundaries throughout California, including the 75th Assembly District that I have represented for the past 10 years. The current district includes the cities of Escondido, San Marcos and Temecula, along with Bonsall, Fallbrook, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley and Valley Center. But that’s changing. Escondido and San Marcos will now be located in the 76th Assembly District, and Temecula will be in the 71st. The 75th has been expanded to the e... Full story

  • Thank you for news

    Updated Nov 10, 2022

Just wanted to say I appreciate the Fallbrook Village News. We moved here almost two years ago because Fallbrook is a great little town and its people seem to have a lot more common sense residents than some other San Diego County areas. There’s always a few bad apples anywhere you go, but Fallbrook seems to have less of them. I really appreciate Julie Reeder’s articles and just wanted to reach out and let you all know. Her views fall in line with ours and it’s a breath of fresh air to read articles that have facts and truth... Full story

  • Indeed a sad chapter for FUESD

    Updated Nov 10, 2022

Julie Reeder Publisher Just because somebody accuses you of something doesn't mean it's true. Just because someone threatens to bring a lawsuit doesn't prove they actually have grounds. By the time everybody reads this, the election will have happened two days ago. We just found out Monday night that the Fallbrook Union Elementary Board is congratulating itself for avoiding a long drawn out expensive potential litigation initiated by the superintendent who has decided to leave voluntarily, although she's alleging a hostile... Full story

  • Honoring our Veterans through better mental health understanding

    Updated Nov 10, 2022

Daniel Ryer Special to the Village News Veterans Day, Nov 11, is a day for understanding. It’s an important day for honoring all those who have served and sacrificed, and all those who are currently doing so. There are many efforts underway to honor them further by understanding their struggles, including mental health struggles, so that we may support them and help them in their journey to find the peace they deserve after returning home. When asked what they believe the most effective means of mental health support for v... Full story

  • My multi-pronged approach to removing homeless encampments

    Updated Nov 10, 2022

Senator Brian Jones District 38 California’s approach to homelessness is a failure. Tent cities are everywhere; no community is immune. The problem is huge, but there are things we can do that will make a difference in the short-term while we work to solve the long-term. On Dec. 5, the first day of the new legislative session, I will introduce a proposal to help communities clean up encampments from sensitive areas in a compassionate manner. We must protect public safety and public health, particularly where our children a... Full story

  • Kicking It through the end of the year

    Updated Nov 3, 2022

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News It’s fair to say fall has arrived. It’s visible from my office window. Signs are everywhere. Across cloudless skies, the crows swoop in to the crown of the persimmon tree. They pluck the hearts from the just ripened fruit. Our orioles have left for another year. In their passing, they have vacated the hummingbird feeder leaving it to the bees. Lots of migrating birds pause to dunk in the backyard bird baths while resident doves line the telephone wires waiting for the... Full story

  • As water costs rise, avocado production falls

    Updated Nov 3, 2022

For as long as anyone can remember, the avocado has been synonymous with the Fallbrook, Bonsall, and Rainbow areas. The nearby stretch of Interstate 15 is named after the bumpy green fruit and, of course, Fallbrook hosts the popular Avocado Festival each spring, a tradition that dates back to the 1940s. But a new report released by the County of San Diego earlier this month concludes that our region’s once thriving avocado industry – much of it concentrated in Fallbrook and Rainbow – is shriveling, due in large measure to th... Full story

  • I was wrong

    Updated Nov 3, 2022

It is easy to fool millions, but difficult to convince just one they have been fooled. Around a century ago, people were just not buying alligator pears. Which was bad news for the growers of this fruit. Few would even try it. They changed the name to avocado. Problem solved. Close to six decades ago, few seemed to be donating to “Save the Jungles.” People were thinking snakes, Piranhas and mosquitoes. So to get them thinking toucans, butterflies, and short people with rings in their noses, they changed the name of where the... Full story

As the area coordinator for the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child North San Diego County Area Team, I wanted to thank all those who packed shoeboxes for the OCC Ministry during the 2021 collection season in the surrounding Fallbrook and Bonsall areas. Over 3,100 individual shoeboxes were packed by the generous donors in our local area and were processed through the Drop-Off Location at CrossWay Community Church on South Stage Coach Lane. The Samaritan’s Purse Project OCC collects shoebox gifts filled with fun toy... Full story

  • CDC adds COVID vaccines to childhood schedule despite thousands of reported serious side effects and no risk

    Updated Nov 3, 2022

Julie Reeder Publisher In Sweden, health officials stopped recommending the COVID-19 vaccine for children under 12 because they saw “no clear benefit” and in Denmark, the government has suspended its national COVID-19 vaccination campaign. If, as an adult, someone makes a decision to take a risk from an experimental vaccine that has increased strokes, deaths, clots, neurological disease, etc in exchange for three months immunity, that's their right, but to mandate it for children who have no power and statistically no ris... Full story

  • More work to do

    Updated Oct 28, 2022

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District The current legislative session ended on Aug. 31. In normal times, no more business would be conducted by the Legislature in Sacramento until the next session officially begins on Dec. 5. But these are far from normal times. Violent crime is exploding and the homelessness crisis is worsening. Gas prices are approaching $7 a gallon, and families are being forced to choose between paying the rent, buying food or putting gas in the car. The Legislature needs to take immediate action. We... Full story
