Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District As the Assembly representative for the 75th District, which includes the eastern and northern two-thirds of San Diego County, I’m reaching out to let you know about the services available through my District Office (DO). My staff and I are honored and excited to represent you, and to provide any assistance you may need when dealing with state agencies. Navigating the state’s bureaucracy can be a challenge, and helping people bypass the busy signals and long wait times is an imp... Full story
Julie clearly does not understand the difference between gender expression and drag queens. Drag queens are not inherently trans women, nor is every trans woman a drag queen. We won’t even get into Drag Kings or Bio Queens - I don’t think Julie has the strength to clutch that many pearls at once. Drag queen story hours do not involve suggestive or inappropriate dancing. If Ms. Reeder is able to provide a video of inappropriate dancing specifically at Drag Queen Story Hour in a public library, I will be happy to revisit her... Full story
My fellow Americans, the time has come to make a decision. Do we want “we the people” or do we want what the government dictates? The takeover is imminent if we close our eyes and let it happen. Consider your innermost feelings and desires for your family. Do you want to be governed by a bunch of bureaucrats or by you as an individual with God given rights for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? It has come to me through thoughtful prayer that President Trump with the help of God is our only hope to restore our cou... Full story
Julie Reeder Publisher In a narrow ruling last Friday, June 30, the Supreme Court majority ruled to protect artists and content creators’ free speech. Will compelled speech be challenged next? While free speech advocates hailed the decision, LGBTQ advocates are afraid it is part of a larger agenda. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg claimed Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”that the Supreme Court had an “agenda” other than keeping to the Constitution after it ruled in favor of a Christian web designer. Lorie Smith... Full story
What a wonderful gift it is for us to have the Village News. This newspaper has been very courageously opened for freedom of expression and supports our local community. We read the opinion letters of so many residents, who stand on different sides of the issues at hand, whether we agree or not, that is the freedom that we still have when you embrace that each one of us was created uniquely, with free will to choose. Thank you, Julie Reeder and Village News staff. In the past two and a half years, we have seen an explosion... Full story
“Laws are like sausages,” said Otto Von Bismark, the former Chancellor of Germany. “It’s better not to see them being made.” This famous quote – made more than 100 years ago – certainly applies to what we’re seeing today from the City of San Diego as Fallbrook and Rainbow seek to change water suppliers. As you are probably aware, we have filed detachment applications, as they are called, with the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) to part ways with the San Diego County Water Authority, which has raised wate... Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District The importance of removing spent nuclear fuel cannot be overstated. The safe and responsible management of this hazardous material is paramount for protecting public health, the environment, and future generations. Spent nuclear fuel is safely being stored at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), but that is not a permanent solution. Over the past four and a half years, I have served as the County of San Diego representative on the SONGS Community Engagement Panel. This quarterly... Full story
Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District As vice chair of the Assembly Emergency Management Committee, I participated in a Joint Informational Hearing with the Assembly Insurance Committee on June 14. Discussions involved the current crisis facing the state’s insurance industry, specifically related to wildfires and the usefulness of Catastrophe Modeling to assess risks for homeowners. Catastrophe modeling is a combination of modeling catastrophe footprint on exposures and linking them to insurance and reinsurance business... Full story
Julie Reeder Publisher On July 10, LAFCO directors will meet and vote on whether FPUD and RMWD can detach from the San Diego Water Authority (SDWA) to join Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD). They have been mulling it over for three years. It’s an amount of business that is very small, compared to SDWA’s entire budget. FPUD only accounts for 1.3% of SDWA’s total budget and their budget margin of error is + or - 6%. So what is the big deal? The deal is power and control. This is a great example of why local control is so... Full story
Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News Well into our fourth week in Paris, we are running out of things to do that we haven’t done before. Even so, I’m guessing we’ve seen more of Paris than the people living here. Isn’t that always the way? Of all of the museums we’ve visited, and some multiple times, we are going today to the home of modern (they pronounce it “moe-dern”) art in Paris – Le Pompidou. It isn’t particularly attractive compared to the many old beautiful buildings around the city because this... Full story
This is simple. Seiders believes it is her right to decide what is published and where it is published. Well, people in the United States are blessed with the right to make their own choices. Newspapers can publish what they choose and print it where they choose. Seiders is blessed with the right to choose to read it or not. She thinks it would be better on every level if it were in the religious section, as in, “Warning, this a religious article.” She, as everyone, has the right to read what they want, watch what they wan... Julie Reeder Publisher June is Pride Month, and efforts continue to normalize transgender and non-binary culture. But obviously, not everyone is on board. Boycotts on businesses like Anheuser-Busch and Target have caused billions of dollars in losses. For decades, most people I know treated all people respectfully and just said, "It's not my business or concern what people do behind closed doors as long as they don't try to push it on me or my kids." Well, we are long past... Full story
Publisher Julie Reeder recently penned an editorial about our supposed two-tier system of justice. Ms. Reeder puts a great deal of emphasis on the FBI 1023 document that supposedly links the Biden family to taking a bribe. Here are some facts: This document was created during the Trump administration when supposedly some unknown person reported on the alleged bribe. At the time, the FBI (Chris Wray, Director) and the DOJ (Bill Barr AG) decided that the report had no credibility and was not followed up on. Fast forward to a... Full story
Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District Housing First prioritizes immediate, "low barrier" access to housing for those living on the streets. While this may sound like an admirable mission, the requirements for living in housing is… nothing! There aren't any requirements, conditions, or milestones such as sobriety or compliance with treatment, or self-improvement. All state-funded homeless programs must align with the core principles of Housing First, which include providing housing to tenants irrespective of their substance u... Full story
By now, we’ve all heard the news that former President Donald Trump has been indicted on federal felony criminal charges. Among other crimes, Trump is charged with violating the Espionage Act after he knowingly took approximately 300 highly classified documents from the CIA, Pentagon and National Security Agency, endangering our national security. The indictment reveals that Trump showed the classified national security material to individuals without a security clearance and stored them in locations where he regularly e... Full story
Steven Schindler Special to the Village News There’s a growing menace sweeping the nation. It’s everywhere. It’s on our highways and byways. In big cities and small towns. On our streets, alleys, strands, boardwalks, and sometimes our sidewalks. They usually come in pairs, but often they travel in groups of five, 10, even a dozen or more. They’re on two wheels and your safety and well-being are the last thing on their mind. Hells Angels? The Pagans or the Outlaws motorcycle gangs? Nope. Who is this new generation of two-wheel... Today commemorates the 79th anniversary of D-Day. One hundred and fifty-six thousand Americans and Allied forces launched the largest amphibious attack in history to liberate the continent of Europe from the iron grip of Hitler’s Third Reich. But instead of showering tributes on the men of the U.S. Army Rangers who scaled the cliffs at Normandy or the 1st and 29th US Army divisions who stormed the beaches while torrents of Nazi bombs and bullets were raining down on them, Democrats chose to celebrate Gay Pride Month i... Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones California's 40th Senate District Great news! My bill to help fix California’s teacher shortage was approved by the State Senate with strong bipartisan support. Senate Bill 811 will make it easier for teachers to move throughout the country and bring more teachers to the state. This measure is especially critical for teachers in military families who are frequently called to relocate on short notice. California is facing a serious teacher shortage. We need swift and unwavering action t... Full story
So everyone walked out of Thursday’s meeting on the homeless problem in Fallbrook, wondering what possible purpose it served other than political theater. Our law enforcement on the left side of the room answered my question of “Can you force street people to do anything?” with an unequivocal “no.” On the right side, we heard from about five people how many services and benefits they offer street people with your taxes funding them and their salaries. Got it? No, go home and shut up. Please note here, I fully support San Dieg... Full story
Maynard’s reportage may be improving. His latest fantasy actually includes two verifiable statements (a first, I believe): to wit, Lia Thomas, who had transitioned from male to female, won the 2022 women’s 500 freestyle race. The expected winner, Emma Weyant, took second place. But the real news is in what Maynard didn’t say. Thomas’s time was 4:33:24, Weyant’s time was 4:34:99. So Thomas won by a margin of 1.75 seconds. Hardly a smashing victory. Now let’s look at what it would take to start breaking records. In the women’s... Full story
Shocked and disappointed in Fallbrook Republican Women’s Club I am sorely disappointed in the Fallbrook Republican Women’s Club for allowing their invited and discredited speaker Douglas Frank to continue speaking after he advised the crowd “if there is ANTIFA or left wing radicals in your town of Fallbrook, don’t go to the police to stop them. Get your rifles and use them to rid your town of these radicals.” I was in the audience Friday, June 9, at Frank’s talk at the Mission Theater and was shocked to hear him advocate th... Full story
The Pride flag flown at the White House was not in violation of the flag code. I’m sorry you were misled by a doctored image where the U.S. flag that always flies atop the White House, high above the Pride flag, has been photoshopped out. Your ire might be better directed at the man who set up shop at the 76 and Old 395 that had a variety of flags which actually violated flag code. Fun fact: the Pride Flag was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, an Army Veteran. The outdated tradition of June weddings has often been a... Full story
Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District The 75th Assembly District, which I am honored to represent in Sacramento, covers the largely rural eastern two-thirds of San Diego County, and is home to much of our agricultural areas and tribal governments. Unfortunately, much of that area lies within a Very High Fire Risk Severity zone and needs reliable, sustainable water infrastructure. Given our region’s vulnerability to recurring droughts, diminishing groundwater resources and wildfires, I am very pleased to support AB 1567 (... Full story
I debated writing a response to Rick Reiss’s opinion letter, “Dear Senator Jones…” I thought to myself, “what would a Sister do?” A Sister would pay it no mind and focus on the next charity Bingo or Pictionary night. But I’m not a sister. And classifying an organization that has helped so many, that exists to spread joy and stand up for marginalized people as a bigoted hate group is something I object to. Comparing The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to a minstrel show is a false equivalency; the Catholic Church is not... Full story
Tim O’Leary Special to the Village News A recent public hearing over the fate of our future water costs and services turned out to be a bust. But the foreboding remarks by a Fallbrook community leader caused me to explore my own observations. But before I can peer into our region’s prospects, I should set the stage. On June 5, a dozen of us concerned citizens boarded a bus chartered by the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce. The bright yellow school bus seemed strangely empty, almost cavernous. Many of our thoughts drifted int... Full story
