  • Paying more for electricity?

    Updated May 4, 2023

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District Last week, California utility companies rolled out a new fixed-rate bill proposal. The basics of the proposal are the more you make, the more you pay for the flat rate. Then there will be a reduced usage charges, subsidized for all households by the flat rate. Here's the breakdown in pricing for San Diegans. · Household income $28,000 – $69,000 would pay $34 a month. · Household income from $69,000 – $180,000 would pay $73 a month. · Household income above $180,000 would pay $128 a month.... Full story

  • Chorale dinner show was a fun evening

    Updated Apr 27, 2023

The annual fundraising dinner show put on by the Fallbrook Chorale on April 15 did not disappoint. “The Brooktown Diner” is a cleverly written story which takes main characters Walter and Cynthia aka Wally and Cissy back in time to their meeting and subsequent romance at the diner in Fallbrook. Members of the chorale wrote the script and then incorporated the wonderful music of the fifties to complete the telling of the story. The amazing set design easily transforms from Walter and Cynthia’s Fallbrook living room, back... Full story

  • Sacramento politicians want to force a welfare housing project in your neighborhood – Here's how you stop them

    Updated Apr 26, 2023

Carl DeMaio Special to the Village News Consider this scenario: you open the newspaper and learn that a massive government-subsidized housing project for low-income and homeless individuals has been proposed for your neighborhood. Because you are concerned that the project is too dense for your local roads to handle – and you fear that these projects are highly associated with increased crime – you immediately contact your local city council representatives to urge them to vote against approving the project. Unf... Full story

  • Re: 'Yetis, unicorns, and Fauci's covid myths' [Village News, Maynard Letter, 4/13/23]

    Updated Apr 26, 2023

Maynard made a futile attempt to impugn Dr. Anthony Fauci’s character. Here’s what you need to know about Dr. Fauci. He was director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (1984–2023) chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (1980–1923). In his distinguished and unblemished career, he won the following “awards and honors: National Medal of Science, Presidential Medal of Freedom (2008), Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedica... Full story

  • Fighting back against Sexually Violent Predators

    Updated Apr 26, 2023

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District I’m pleased to say that at our last Board of Supervisors meeting, we unanimously passed a resolution to support Senate Bill, 832, which would prioritize public safety when placing Sexually Violent Predators. I want to thank Senator Brian Jones' for his leadership and authoring SB 832, which would demand transparency from the Department of State Hospitals and require them to consider their properties and state prison properties for placement. SB 832 would also prevent an SVP from being p... Full story

  • Re: 'Revisiting Reparations' [Village News, Terrell letter, 4/6/23]

    Updated Apr 26, 2023

Separating the wheat from the chaff. In his latest sanctimonious rant, "JT" asserts that the Democrat Party is not to blame for slavery or racism in America, when the preponderance of historical evidence suggests otherwise. I admire "JT's" hubris, even though his assumptions bear little resemblance to the historical record. In truth, Democrats obstructed blacks from voting, owning property, and exercising their inalienable rights for more than 100 years following the end of the Civil War. In 1964, President Johnson, a... Full story

  • Re: Re: 'Does Nikki Haley qualify as a natural born citizen?' [Village News, Willis letter, 4/13/23]

    Updated Apr 26, 2023

Hmmmmm, how did we get here? Ms Willis, in the 3/9/23 edition of the Fallbrook Village News, made a statement that Nikki Haley was not qualified to be the U.S. president, because she was not a “Natural Born Citizen.” This statement was probably based on the fact that Nikki Haley’s parents were not U.S. citizens at the time of her birth. However, the term “natural born citizen” is not defined anywhere in the written U.S. constitution. There is mention of a person not born in the U.S. but born of U.S. citizen parents as a U.S.... Full story

  • Scholarships for women

    Updated Apr 26, 2023

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District One of my passions in public service is encouraging young women to fulfill their life’s potential by taking full advantage of available educational opportunities. As a member of the Legislative Women’s Caucus, I am happy to spread the word about the Minerva Scholarship program. Now in its fourth year, the scholarship was established by the Women in California Leadership Foundation to educate, support and empower young women and girls. The foundation is committed to providing sel... Full story

  • Kicking It: A month in Paris, Day 5

    Updated Apr 20, 2023

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News Saturday October 6, 2012: We wake up to another drizzling gray sky. Oh, well. We are Parisians now, weather be damned. Our plan is to visit the White Basilica perched on the horizon across town. Setting off from the left bank, our bus bounces along tree lined streets over the Seine to the Arc de Triomphe circle where we will transfer to the bus that takes us out to Montmartre. We traipse across several busy streets at the cross walks to end up at the bus stop we believe... Full story

  • The Constitution

    Updated Apr 20, 2023

Douglas V. Gibbs Special to the Village News “What is the Constitution?” Most people struggle with the answer. The short answer is that it is the Supreme Law of the Land, and the document that established our current governmental system as a federal republic. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest written constitution in the world at 235 years old. The average age of other constitutions around the world is 17 years. Ours was written in 1787 and went into operation in 1789, which means the United States has been governed by a s... Full story

  • California's business climate – Better or worse?

    Updated Apr 20, 2023

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District California has long been recognized for its unfriendly business climate. During the pandemic, a bad situation got worse when the state forced thousands of mostly small businesses to shut down, driving many companies into bankruptcy and forcing layoffs for thousands of workers. The last thing we need now are more laws imposing greater burdens on the businesses that survived, and in many cases are still trying to recover. Unfortunately, some in Sacramento don’t get that, and apparently... Full story

  • A new chief administrative officer

    Updated Apr 20, 2023

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District While most of the attention at the County Board of Supervisors has been on finding a replacement for District 4, another vacancy is just as vital. The chief administrative officer (CAO) is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the county government and implementing the policies and directives of the County Board of Supervisors. The CAO is similar to the CEO of a business or a strong city manager. Here's the breakdown of how it works. The residents of San Diego County are... Full story

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District On March 28, the Native American Caucus held a hearing in Sacramento to discuss fentanyl’s impact on tribal communities and to raise awareness along with identifying solutions to the crisis. As a member of the Caucus, I was extremely honored to take part in this eye-opening discussion. Participants included representatives from reservations throughout California, including the Pala Band of Indians and the Manzanita Band, both from San Diego County. Healthcare providers, law e... Full story

  • A county update

    Updated Apr 12, 2023

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District It's been a crazy and unfortunate week at the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. I wanted to give you an update on the latest regarding Nathan Fletcher. On March 26, Mr. Fletcher claimed he was stepping away temporarily due to alcohol abuse and PTSD. However, it's clear that this was just a coverup for infidelity and alleged other crimes. The next day, two women accused Supervisor Nathan Fletcher of sexual harassment and assault. On March 29, Mr. Fletcher announced he would be... Full story

  • Homeless people live around Fallbrook

    Updated Apr 12, 2023

Our family has lived in Fallbrook since 1975. I’ve seen a lot of changes in our town; some were good and some were not. The current problem is a topic that seems to be growing larger every day, and that is the “homeless” situation. A few weeks ago the Village News printed a large story about the homeless in Fallbrook with pictures and details. The same week I wrote a letter to the Village News about the same, and it was printed the following week, as yet nothing has changed. I know others have called the Fallbrook Chamb... Full story

  • Newsom continues to cut press access while lecturing Red States on 'Campaign for Democracy'

    Updated Apr 12, 2023

Julie Reeder Publisher This week I am forfeiting much of my editorial space to CalMatters. They have done an excellent job of documenting the frustrations of journalists up and down the state in dealing with Gov. Newsom’s office and administration. These are left-leaning and right-leaning journalists with specific examples of how they are being stonewalled. This piece is only 30% of the entire story which can be read in its entirety online at MyValleyNews.com and VillageNews.com. This is important right now because as G... Full story

  • Re: Re: 'Does Nikki Haley qualify as a natural born citizen? [Village News, Tevebaugh letter, 3/23/23]

    Updated Apr 12, 2023

Mr. Tevebaugh refers to the 14th Amendment as a definition of natural born citizen. This Amendment does not mention anything about natural born citizens. The purpose of this Amendment is to clarify what constitutes a "citizen" which is not the same as "natural born" citizen. As I mentioned in my letter, the Founding Fathers were very specific as to the qualifications needed to run for President and Vice President – just being a "citizen" does not qualify. Please read Article I Sec 1 paragraph 5: "No Person except a natural b... Full story

  • Yetis, unicorns, and Fauci's covid myths

    Updated Apr 12, 2023

It was a balmy summer's night, and a group of mad scientists at the People's Liberation Army laboratory on the outskirts of Wuhan, China, were busy cooking up a super virus that would change the course of history – and not in a good way. Ignoring the Obama Administration's moratorium on "gain of function" research, Dr. Anthony Fauci awarded a DHS grant to Echo Health Alliance, elevating them to team leader status in the PLA's clandestine program. Despite the inherent risks, Fauci continued his collaborative effort with the P... Full story

  • An open letter to Assemblymember Marie Waldron regarding AB 659

    Updated Apr 6, 2023

Julie Reeder Publisher I understand that, thankfully, the Gardasil HPV vaccine mandate has been dropped for grades 8-12 in Assembly Bill 659, but the college mandate remains. Gardasil is yet another vaccine that is being pushed on healthy young people, despite hundreds of lawsuits presently being fought against it because of severe complications, including death, of young people who took the shot. Some video posts from parents show previously healthy young people laying in their beds, debilitated, trembling in constant pain... Full story

  • Kicking It: A month in Paris Day 4

    Updated Apr 6, 2023

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to the Village News Continued, Oct. 5, 2012: Finally, our biorhythms are aligning to our new time zone. Each of us are armed with a city map and bus pass, as we set out to discover Eiffel’s famous tower. Arriving at the bus stop, our number 69 just pulls away as we get there. Wouldn’t ya know? It’s a 30 minute wait until another one comes along. As it turns out, riding the Paris metro is a hoot. It’s an easy, cheap way to see the city. Which is why we gawk out the windows in wonder that we... Full story

    Updated Apr 6, 2023

After a mind numbing word salad, Maynard gets to his misinterpretation of the status of California’s state budget. Here’s the actuality: “Governor Gavin Newsom released his proposed 2023-24 California state budget on Jan. 10, projecting a $22.5 billion shortfall that the administration would solve through a series of trigger cuts, delays or deferrals of spending authorized in earlier years, and withdrawals or reductions of planned one-time spending. The $223.6 billion spending plan would protect many ongoing inves... Full story
