  • A Love Letter

    Tim O'Leary, Writer|Updated Dec 20, 2022

Hi Margaret, Thank you for your sweet call yesterday reminding me of our anniversary. I spent today bathed in memories of the beautiful years we spent together and all the joyous trips you took me on. I shared that today with our dear friend, Pat Roybal. She was touched and she misses you deeply. She told me to say: "Hello." She is sending you some greeting cards to wish you well. Sadly, however, I could not come to pick you up or bring you here. As you may recall, the... Full story

  • Re: 'Ahrens: Christian nationalism isn't Christianity' [Village News, Terrell Letter, 11-24/22]

    Updated Dec 7, 2022

You may have come across "Gaslighting," Merriam-Webster's word of 2022, and figured that it was just a hip way of saying someone lied, but it's more than that. It's been described as a manipulative tactic to gain power and control of others, plant seeds of uncertainty in another person's mind. The self-doubt and constant questioning slowly cause people to distort their reality. Thus, the actual improvements in national security, employment and business prospects for all citizens under the Trump administration are gradually... Full story

  • Biden's rise to political prominence

    Updated Dec 7, 2022

Joseph Biden is a curious fellow with few notable accomplishments over his tepid career. In many respects, his checkered past can best be described as a vast wasteland littered with an endless array of gaffes. Yet this profoundly flawed figure has emerged from a career of obscurity and mediocrity to the spiraling towers of political nobility. This lifelong grifter has been jettisoned into the stratosphere of the exalted by his Party's peers. But for what reason? It's clear to anyone with a pulse that Biden is incapable of man... Full story

  • San Luis Rey River Park coming soon

    Updated Dec 7, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District As your County Supervisor, I support opportunities that promote the health and wellbeing of residents in North County. Going back to my time as mayor, I’ve been a big supporter of creating parks and trails. Coming soon to North County is the fully connected San Luis Rey River Park that will run approximately nine miles along the San Luis Rey River, south of State Route 76, from Oceanside to Interstate 15. The San Luis Rey River Park will create a dynamic open space legacy balancing r... Full story

  • Homelessness: Real solutions needed

    Updated Dec 7, 2022

Assemblymember Marie Waldron District 75 California has 30% of the nation’s homeless and over half of its unsheltered homeless; $17 billion has been thrown at the problem, yet homeless numbers continue to grow. Between 2019 and 2022, the homeless population increased by over 22,000. We have become a national embarrassment. So what can be done? Last session, my caucus introduced a comprehensive bill package with real Homelessness Solutions. The package included 15 significant pieces of legislation designed to deal with the r... Full story

  • Questions about superintendent leaving FUESD

    Updated Dec 5, 2022

With regards to Candace Singh leaving FUESD as superintendent and her "settlement," I have two questions. First, Dr. Singh claims she is leaving because she is being harassed by a single school board member. If she were so devoted to FUESD and this were truly the only reason she felt she needed to leave, why not wait until after the election? As it turns out, that particular board member is losing her reelection bid. Come Dec. 12 when the new board members take over, her problem should end. Second, if Dr. Singh, an... Full story

  • Helping seniors

    Updated Dec 1, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District Seniors are the fastest growing population in North County and we must do all we can to help those living on fixed incomes. With the cost of basic necessities continuing to rise, we want to make sure our senior population has resources available to them. I’m pleased to say, this week we took a couple of major steps toward helping our senior citizens. Last week, we voted unanimously to establish a rental subsidy pilot program for seniors who are at risk of becoming homeless. The Pilot S... Full story

  • Appeals Court rules against SDUSD COVID-19 vaccine mandate for students

    Updated Dec 1, 2022

Julie Reeder Publisher The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals last week ruled against the San Diego Unified School District in a precedent-setting decision for the State of California regarding COVID-19 vaccine mandates to attend school in person. A lower state court found in December 2021 that school districts cannot impose vaccine mandates on their own, in addition to the vaccines required by the state as a precondition for in person attendance. No doubt the California legislature will be working feverishly to pass the Covid vacc... Full story

    Updated Dec 1, 2022

I would like to thank everyone that participated in the inaugural St. Peter Thrift Store sale held at the St. Peter the Apostle Church plaza last weekend. It was a huge success and we welcome everyone to visit our St. Peter Thrift Store on Main Street and see more of what we have. I would also like to inform anyone that purchased a village from the sale to please stop by our thrift store and pick up the lighted cord you left behind. • Kicking It with wisdom

    Updated Dec 1, 2022

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News They say, “wisdom comes with age” which should make me one of the wisest people around. As it turns out, life presents numerous lessons along the road to wisdom. Therefore, why not learn from others? For instance, when someone offers you help, take it. Drop your overblown worthless pride and say, “thank you.” What you will discover is your load gets lighter. The second thing I learned was to accept praise. Like thank you, it can be awkward in the beginning. It will start... Full story

  • Artemis leads the way back to the moon

    Updated Dec 1, 2022

With all the arguing and bickering constantly being stirred up by political partisans and the reporting of such by all media including even the war of words being perpetrated by a couple of regular Village News Opinion writers, we can forget that our country and those willing to work with us can do great things. If you have even an inkling of curiosity about what sort of team building, scientific innovation, and overwhelming technological achievement our country is capable of, then you need to get familiar with NASA’s A... Full story

  • San Diego is a military town

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District San Diego County is home to one of the nation’s largest populations of veterans. As of 2021, more than 200,000 veterans call San Diego County their home. Although San Diego County is historically known as a military town, our veteran unemployment numbers are higher compared to other counties. As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, I’ve made it a priority to do all we can for those who protect our country. Last month, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed an effort to increase rec... Full story

  • Re: 'Singh settlement amount nearly $400,000' [Village News, 11/10/22]

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Let me be clear about one thing – What happened with Dr. Candace Singh is not a good thing for FUESD, but it is of her making and has been in the making for years, with the support of the former board, of which Caron Lieber was also a member albeit in the minority. And it should be known that Dr. Singh’s negotiated exit package is a complete lack of respect and regard for the children and their families she claimed to be so “passionate” about serving and a super middle-finger to the community of Fallbrook, not to mention... Full story

  • Writer returns to fold after journey through the Valley

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Tim O’Leary Special to the Village News Hello, dear reader. It is wonderful, yet a bit daunting, to walk again in your midst. The good Lord has carried me through the Valley of the Shadow, and now I am back, either to your pleasure or your chagrin. A few of you may remember me from Temecula’s glory days. That was when a growth-choked and traffic-snarled burg in southwest Riverside County was anchored by a cadre of volunteers who latched onto a huge parcel of developer-donated land. Those hearty souls – with just their tract... Full story

  • Ahrens: Christian nationalism isn't Christianity

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

The headline above is part of the title of an article by Tim Ahrens that appeared in the Columbus Dispatch (8 Nov 2022). This is the gist of the article: "Christian nationalists falsely teach that there is no separation of church and state – and that conservative Christians should seize complete power by any means necessary." Tim Ahrens is the senior minister at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Downtown Columbus. And why is this relevant? Because this mix of faux religion and power politics is precisely what T... Full story

  • Native American Heritage Month

    Updated Nov 25, 2022

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District November is Native American Heritage Month, a national celebration recognizing Tribal history and sovereignty. San Diego County is home to more Indian reservations than any other county in the United States. These sovereign tribal governments all lie within the 75th Assembly District, and as their representative in Sacramento, the commemoration has special significance for me. Self-government is essential so that tribes can protect their unique cultures and identities to enrich the... Full story

  • Re: 'Indeed a sad chapter for FUESD' [Village News, Letter, 12/10/22]

    Updated Nov 17, 2022

Thank you, Julie Reeder, for your balanced and honest assessment regarding the settlement given by FUESD to the departing superintendent, Candace Singh. You have reported on these events over time and definitely are aware of related past concerns. Even you received negativity from FUESD administration for questioning decisions. Caron Lieber got hit with a lawsuit and threats of another one just for upholding her duties as an elected trustee! Although I have previously taken exception to some of your editorials about national... Full story

El CAJON – In its recent “CalChamber Vote Record,” the California Chamber of Commerce announced that Senator Brian W. • Kicking It with my stuff

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal, Special to The Village News|Updated Nov 17, 2022

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News George Carlin said it best in his bit about “Stuff.” Paraphrasing him, we’d all agree that my stuff is good, while your stuff isn’t. Which is why I wondered when driving past a neighbor’s house, if they were having a party? I mean, the drive was lined with newish cars while the open- garage door revealed it to be overflowing with a lot of stuff. I cannot help but wonder why anyone can justify parking a $40,000, $50,000,... Full story

  • Dear U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

    Updated Nov 17, 2022

Last week, your agency announced planned “public engagement and input opportunities” for EPA programs funded by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. As you may already know, America's national debt is well above $31 trillion and counting and so much of this profligate government spending has fueled U.S. inflation. As such, the best way that the EPA can spend taxpayer funds from the 2022 IRA is to simply transfer these IRA funds directly to the U.S. Treasury as a payment to reduce the public debt. Here is the website: htt... Full story

  • Honoring our Veterans through better mental health understanding

    Updated Nov 10, 2022

Daniel Ryer Special to the Village News Veterans Day, Nov 11, is a day for understanding. It’s an important day for honoring all those who have served and sacrificed, and all those who are currently doing so. There are many efforts underway to honor them further by understanding their struggles, including mental health struggles, so that we may support them and help them in their journey to find the peace they deserve after returning home.
