Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District It’s no secret that opioids are killing Americans at an alarming rate, specifically fentanyl. In 2021, more than 900 San Deigans died from opioid-related accidental overdoses, a 54% increase from the previous year. Over 6,000 pounds of fentanyl was seized in San Diego County last year alone, which would be enough to kill 1.4 billion people. I have made fentanyl awareness and education a top priority. We’ve declared it a crisis, funded education efforts targeting young people, held an ele... Full story
From SANDAG’s website: “SANDAG is governed by a Board of Directors composed of mayors, council members, and county supervisors from each of the region's 19 local governments. Supplementing these voting members are advisory representatives from Imperial County, the U.S. Department of Defense, Caltrans, San Diego Unified Port District, Metropolitan Transit System, North County Transit District, San Diego County Water Authority, Southern California Tribal Chairmen's Association, Mexico, and the San Diego County Regional Air... Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District Redistricting has rearranged legislative boundaries throughout California, including the 75th Assembly District that I have represented for the past 10 years. The current district includes the cities of Escondido, San Marcos and Temecula, along with Bonsall, Fallbrook, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley and Valley Center. But that’s changing. Escondido and San Marcos will now be located in the 76th Assembly District, and Temecula will be in the 71st. The 75th has been expanded to the e... Full story
Just wanted to say I appreciate the Fallbrook Village News. We moved here almost two years ago because Fallbrook is a great little town and its people seem to have a lot more common sense residents than some other San Diego County areas. There’s always a few bad apples anywhere you go, but Fallbrook seems to have less of them. I really appreciate Julie Reeder’s articles and just wanted to reach out and let you all know. Her views fall in line with ours and it’s a breath of fresh air to read articles that have facts and truth... Full story
Julie Reeder Publisher Just because somebody accuses you of something doesn't mean it's true. Just because someone threatens to bring a lawsuit doesn't prove they actually have grounds. By the time everybody reads this, the election will have happened two days ago. We just found out Monday night that the Fallbrook Union Elementary Board is congratulating itself for avoiding a long drawn out expensive potential litigation initiated by the superintendent who has decided to leave voluntarily, although she's alleging a hostile... Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News It’s fair to say fall has arrived. It’s visible from my office window. Signs are everywhere. Across cloudless skies, the crows swoop in to the crown of the persimmon tree. They pluck the hearts from the just ripened fruit. Our orioles have left for another year. In their passing, they have vacated the hummingbird feeder leaving it to the bees. Lots of migrating birds pause to dunk in the backyard bird baths while resident doves line the telephone wires waiting for the... Full story
For as long as anyone can remember, the avocado has been synonymous with the Fallbrook, Bonsall, and Rainbow areas. The nearby stretch of Interstate 15 is named after the bumpy green fruit and, of course, Fallbrook hosts the popular Avocado Festival each spring, a tradition that dates back to the 1940s. But a new report released by the County of San Diego earlier this month concludes that our region’s once thriving avocado industry – much of it concentrated in Fallbrook and Rainbow – is shriveling, due in large measure to th... It is easy to fool millions, but difficult to convince just one they have been fooled. Around a century ago, people were just not buying alligator pears. Which was bad news for the growers of this fruit. Few would even try it. They changed the name to avocado. Problem solved. Close to six decades ago, few seemed to be donating to “Save the Jungles.” People were thinking snakes, Piranhas and mosquitoes. So to get them thinking toucans, butterflies, and short people with rings in their noses, they changed the name of where the... Full story
As the area coordinator for the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child North San Diego County Area Team, I wanted to thank all those who packed shoeboxes for the OCC Ministry during the 2021 collection season in the surrounding Fallbrook and Bonsall areas. Over 3,100 individual shoeboxes were packed by the generous donors in our local area and were processed through the Drop-Off Location at CrossWay Community Church on South Stage Coach Lane. The Samaritan’s Purse Project OCC collects shoebox gifts filled with fun toy... Full story
Julie Reeder Publisher In Sweden, health officials stopped recommending the COVID-19 vaccine for children under 12 because they saw “no clear benefit” and in Denmark, the government has suspended its national COVID-19 vaccination campaign. If, as an adult, someone makes a decision to take a risk from an experimental vaccine that has increased strokes, deaths, clots, neurological disease, etc in exchange for three months immunity, that's their right, but to mandate it for children who have no power and statistically no ris... Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District The current legislative session ended on Aug. 31. In normal times, no more business would be conducted by the Legislature in Sacramento until the next session officially begins on Dec. 5. But these are far from normal times. Violent crime is exploding and the homelessness crisis is worsening. Gas prices are approaching $7 a gallon, and families are being forced to choose between paying the rent, buying food or putting gas in the car. The Legislature needs to take immediate action. We... Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District You've probably heard me say it before, but I must repeat it, One Safe Place is transforming lives. One Safe Place is a center that serves human trafficking victims, seniors suffering from elder abuse and is a place someone that is being domestically abused can go to escape from their perpetrator. I wanted to share an incredible success story from One Safe Place. Last week, three San Diego Sheriff Deputies accompanied a woman to One Safe Place. The woman was trying to escape her abusive... Knowing the election is days away, turmoil has grown in my spirit over candidates misrepresenting their positions to voters. Regardless of what position you support, transparent truth is vital in making decisions, which ultimately affect the community we have chosen to call home. Years ago I learned, getting upset, frustrated and disappointed over a result where I didn’t try to support factual truths was a disservice. For those who know me, then you know how much Steph and I respect genuine transparency in our lives and t... Full story

Did you happen to catch Biden's speech in Philadelphia? It was delivered in a dimly lit venue full of military props and soviet-style accents meticulously staged around an otherwise Spartan room. But instead of a conciliatory tone, we were treated to a vicious tongue-lashing, calling MAGA supporters extremists and enemies of the state. I know what you are thinking, this is not the first time, and it won't be the last time for Biden to lampoon MAGA supporters. It's true Democrats bounce around the term "extremists" like a... The upcoming election is more than just voting for a Democrat or a Republican. The upcoming election is a decision that we, citizens of this country, will show where their alliance is, good or evil, lies or truth. The freedom that we have is a privilege worth fighting for. The privilege to vote is the right of the citizens of this nation, not to be taken by those who have not embraced the foundation of this nation, who by the way are the ones trying to destroy it from within. Enough! The choices are beyond clear: To continue... Full story
Our country had not been noticeably affected by the eroding educational system until the pandemic ushered in restrictive lock-down of public schools. Virtual learning via Zoom allowed parents to see just how far many non-educational curriculums had progressed and they were appalled by what they saw being taught to their children. Our unique Bonsall Unified School District fell into the restrictions put forth by our State, even when other states were allowing students back to school and allowing mask choice. Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District Last week, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved my effort to require fentanyl education in our schools and increase Narcan distribution. This is a major step for the Safety of San Diego County as accidental deaths caused by fentanyl is the number one killer of people between the ages of 18 and 45. This action will do three things: 1. Work with education officials and the California State Legislature to require fentanyl awareness education in San Diego County classrooms. 2.... Full story

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News According to ancient lore, Moses trudged up Mount Sinai and returned with the Lord’s word chiseled in stone. Recognized the world over, the Ten Commandments is the first recorded letter and it came from God. Egyptian ruler Ptolemy V had his message chiseled into stone around 196 BC. Although that slab of hieroglyphics wasn’t unearthed until 1799, when troops were building a fort in Rashid (Rosetta) during Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. Known as the Rosetta Stone, it is... My sister and I disagreed on abortion. After several lengthy conversations over the years, sans yelling, screaming, and personal attacks I reversed my stance. My brother and I disagreed on the shape of the left/right political diagram. I felt it was an infinite line leading ever further apart leftward and rightward. He felt it was a circle bending up from the bottom (good) toward the top (evil). Over the decades I came to agree with him, the extreme left and extreme right each approaching the disgusting. Fortunately for... Full story
Maynard. His letter presents the worst case of projection I have ever seen, the product of a vivid imagination. While Democratic legislators have been busy enacting major bills to help all Americans, like the Infrastructure bill and, most recently, the Inflation Reduction bill. What are Republican legislators doing? At the federal level, as always, they are just saying no: at the state level, they are busy restricting voting by non-Republicans. So, I will ask this: “what legislation have Republican leaders produced that a... Full story

Whenever I leave my Sycamore Ranch neighborhood, turn left onto Gird Road and drive past the lush vineyards of Monserate Winery, several people to whom I’m very grateful come to mind. The first is Teresa Platt who was a leader back in 2015 through 2018, informing Gird Valley residents about two key issues that would forever change this quiet community. The first was the proposed high school at the south end of Gird Road. The second was the vacant land for sale, previously the Fallbrook Golf course, and whether it would be s... Full story
Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District Fentanyl is taking its deadly toll on our state and nation. According to a recent press release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 5,091 pounds of fentanyl in Imperial and San Diego counties during the first nine months of fiscal year 2022. That’s 60% of the 8,425 pounds seized in the entire country. Drug precursors are typically manufactured in China, then processed in Mexico and smuggled into the U.S. by cartels across our increasingly wide-open southern border. A... Full story
