  • California law already allows abortion

    Updated Oct 13, 2022

Despite some hysterical negative public reaction to the recent Supreme Court decision regarding abortion, that court did not stop legal abortions in California. The court said that, according to the United States Constitution, the states are the proper place for this issue to be decided. California law still allows abortion for about the first six months of pregnancy. The current limit on abortions comes with the law that says if the child would be able to live on its own with medical help, being “viable,” that abortion wou... Full story

  • Planning group is being divided

    Updated Oct 13, 2022

I am writing today to express my concern over the invasion of division in our community representation. Like the rest of the nation, it appears to have become partisan which never occurred during my tenure of eight years as a planning group member. There was a hint of it with the newly elected on the planning group of 2020. I passed it off due to lack of knowledge of the purpose of the planning group. There are 15 elected members in this group. Often seats are filled with no contest, only 15 running. That has always been OK;... Full story

  • The rise of the deep state snakes

    Updated Oct 13, 2022

Jefferson warned us about the encroachment of our civil liberties by Federalist zealots who favored federal rights over individual and states' rights. This extraordinary American visionary and author of the Declaration of Independence predicted nearly 250 years ago that, left to their own devices, the Federalists would move heaven and earth to satisfy their factious inclinations, personal ambitions, and affinity for advancing the bureaucratic state. Jefferson believed self-governance emanates from the consent of the people,... Full story

Jones (R-Santee), and several other legislators held a bill signing ceremony in San Francisco on the morning of Sept. 28 to announce the enactment of several housing and homelessness-related measures. • Addressing fire safety

    Updated Oct 13, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District Living in San Diego County, the threat of fires is constant, that is why I have made fire safety one of my top priorities during my time on the Board of Supervisors. We’ve initiated efforts to come up with a pre-fire strategy and evacuation routes. I’ve led the effort to increase roadside vegetation management, especially along major evacuation corridors. Plus, earlier this year, we were able to acquire a twin-engine helicopter, which is able to fight fires at night. At last week’s Board... Full story

  • Re: 'At what point does an unborn child have civil rights?' [Village News, Letter, 9/29/22]

    Updated Oct 5, 2022

My wife and I wish to respond to the Julie Reeder Op Ed regarding the civil rights of unborn children. We have been pro-lifers all of our lives so our input is going to have that slant to it. We believe that human life begins at inception. We also believe that if a woman does not want a child, she should use any of the many contraceptive paths available to her or demand that the man perform the contraceptive task (either by device, vasectomy, or other). If we take these precautions, we will avoid the conception taking place a... Full story

  • Kicking It with household accidents

    Updated Oct 5, 2022

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News When hard facts are unavailable, all too often, “they say” becomes the fall back for unsubstantiated facts; like, “most accidents happen within a few miles of the home.” Truth be told, upon a closer look, it just may be the home that is causing the harm. And that is why staying uninjured can be a challenge. Need I point out, none of us want to look out the rear window of an ambulance on a mad dash to the ER? Here are spaces around the house which can cause serious... Full story

  • California passes bill to punish doctors who 'Disseminate Misinformation' on COVID

    Updated Oct 5, 2022

Julie Reeder Publisher I have a couple questions. “Do you trust your life and the life of your loved ones with Sacramento politicians or your doctor?” “Who gets to decide what is ‘Misinformation’ or not?” Science involves the debate and work of people with political, academic and scientific contrary ideas, and the freedom to work without government interference and censorship. Governor Newsom just signed into law AB 2098. Assemblyman Evan Low said this bill declares that disinformation and promotion of COVID-19 misinformat... Full story

  • How old men want to be remembered

    Updated Oct 5, 2022

Why do old men write their life stories? My happenings today may give a hint. Came home from the doctor with a prescription that I was told might be a help. Put my key in the front door deadlock – I couldn’t turn it! Went down to the garage phone but couldn’t reach my son. Went back upstairs, not knowing what else to do. I was thumbing through a magazine. I’d picked up yesterday’s mail on the way in. David, who delivers the meals from the Fallbrook Senior Center, arrived upon the scene. I told him my sad story. “Let me t... Full story

  • Costly Golden State

    Updated Oct 5, 2022

Assemblymember Marie Waldron 75th District As any Economics 101 student knows, when the federal government creates billions/trillions of dollars out of thin air, the result is massive inflation. That inflation has now reached a 40-year high, and those with low and moderate incomes are bearing the heaviest burden. Even so, Californians pay more. Compared to national averages, Californians pay a 46% premium for gasoline, (now approaching $7 a gallon), a 37.4% premium for diesel fuel, a 73% premium on residential electricity,... Full story

  • Re: 'Questions needing answers' [Village News, Stanley letter, 9/22/22 ]

    Updated Oct 5, 2022

I will refer to the author of the subject letter as “author.” The author requested me to sit this one out, but alas, duty calls. I’m pleased to announce, though, that no unicorns were harmed in the production of this letter. And I promise not to mention men who get pregnant. To the author, apparently you were unaware of the following: 1. The majority of abortions now are chemical (or medical) abortions, not surgical. 2. “According to a 2018 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, abortio... Full story

  • Per-mile tax removed

    Updated Oct 5, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District On Friday, Sept. 23, the SANDAG Board of Directors (after feeling pressure from the public) decided to remove the per-mile tax from the Regional Transportation Plan. In case you missed it, last year, SANDAG’s Board of Directors voted to approve a $165 billion transportation plan, making it the most expensive transportation plan ever. One of the ways they planned to fund the whole project was by charging San Diegans for every mile they drive. I want to thank everyone who spoke out against S... Full story

  • OPINION: At what point do unborn babies have civil rights?

    Julie Reeder, Publisher|Updated Sep 29, 2022

The abortion debate is so emotionally heated on both sides, and for good reason, because what is at the center of it is the intrinsic value and ownership of a human life. How does it affect the debate if you remove the woman from the equation? Because it is no longer only a woman who can create life. Now human life can be created in a lab. I was told last week that some scientists were recently reprimanded for growing human fetuses in their garage. My first reaction, of course... Full story

  • Reminders about political signs

  • MAGA Movement or Marxist Makeover, which shall it be?

    Updated Sep 29, 2022

On Sept. 17, 1787, after months of debate and consternation, our Constitution was signed by delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies, giving birth to a new nation. In attendance were lawyers, farmers, merchants, and soldiers, the men who forged the way with blood and treasure to bring us to this momentous occasion. Among them was the senior statesman Benjamin Franklin, the Elon Musk of his time, also known affectionately by his friends and adoring fans as Dr. Franklin. As Franklin left the grand chamber of Independence Hall, he... Full story

    Updated Sep 29, 2022

Supervisor Jim Desmond 5th District A lot has happened during my first three years on the Board of Supervisors, but there is nothing that I’m prouder to be a part of than One Safe Place. A few months ago, I got to tour and cut the ribbon for this new building, which will be a lifesaver for North County. Located in San Marcos, One Safe Place provides free support services to anyone who has experienced family violence, child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, hate crimes, elder abuse, human trafficking, violent loss, o... Full story

  • Preventing suicide

    Assemblymember Marie Waldron, 75th District|Updated Sep 29, 2022

In 2020, there were just under 46,000 suicides in the United States, making it the nation’s 12th-leading cause of death. California’s suicide rate is 10.7 per 100,000, compared to 13.4 nationally. Suicide rates across the United States have been increasing and are now double homicide rates. Obviously, more can be done to end this ongoing tragedy. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and this session I co-authored Assembly Concurrent Resolution 37, declaring Sep... Full story

  • Veterans need help to get to the VA

    Updated Sep 29, 2022

There are 2,111 veterans that live in Fallbrook. There is an issue with lack of transportation to the VA in Oceanside or Escondido. The only transportation is through the Breeze 306. The Fallbrook community needs volunteer drivers to assist our vets in getting to appointments. If the vets get to either Oceanside or Escondido, a driver will take them to La Jolla. The DAV pays for gas and maintenance. A person must sign up through the DAV to get this assistance. How does our community come together to help? Are there any... Full story

Assemblymember Marie Waldron District 75 Legislation in Sacramento often flies under the radar. Updated Sep 23, 2022

Elizabeth Youngman-Westphal Special to The Village News The day after I retired, I started reading. Now my habit is to read at least four books a week or more but given the right title, I’ve been known to inhale a book in 24 hours. Mostly I read pure fluff, British historical romance novels. Thanks to the San Diego library system, I can download (or is it upload) up to 25 books every 21 days which means I always have something to read. While some of you may scoff at me for going digital, there are many advantages. For i... Full story

  • Questions needing answers

    Updated Sep 23, 2022
    1

I have questions concerning current events that perhaps your readers can answer for me (John Terrell, please sit this one out, as I am concerned that your responses may involve unicorns and men who get pregnant): On abortion: Most women know if they are likely to engage in sex and certainly can take precautions: the “pill,” intrauterine device, foam, prophylactics, etc. If it happens without premeditation, there is such a thing as reaching over to your beside table and taking the morning after pill. So, I have to ask, how... Full story

  • It's a citizen's right to question the government.

    Updated Sep 23, 2022

Julie Reeder Publisher Recently there have been dozens of whistleblowers who have come forward and provided information about what the FBI has been up to, and it’s not good. It’s not honorable. It’s not what they got into the agency to do. And that was in addition to what we already knew they were up to! Most recently, one whistleblower described how the agency was deprioritizing child trafficking cases so they could focus more on “domestic violent extremism.” He reported that the FBI was inflating numbers and working t... Full story
