Girls Lacrosse hand out awards

FALLBROOK — The Fallbrook High School girls lacrosse team recently held their banquet at the Fallbrook Public Utility District and handed out season awards.

The lacrosse team had a very successful season with two players earning All North County Conference Team selections. Junior Nicole Cook took home a First Team All North County Conference award followed by sophomore teammate Lauren Woods, who picked up Second Team All North County Conference.

Nicole Cook, captain for the lacrosse team, said, “I was very surprised and happy about making first team. The competition in San Diego is so tough that I am extremely honored to be in the same company as the other girls who made first team.”

Cook also walked away with the Most Valuable Player award, as did senior co-captain Courtney Freaney. Freaney, a midfielder for the Warriors, also earned the Gatorade Player of the Year Award. Coach Linda Cook said, “Courtney was the heart and soul of our midfield and she will be very hard to replace. She is a very fast and extremely smart. She knows exactly where to be on the field at all times.”

Other awards were given to junior first year player Alex Zeringue, who was selected as the team’s Most Improved Player; junior Rebecca Jordan, who received Most Inspirational; and junior Angie Scoma, who took home the Best Offensive Player award. Lauren Woods captured her second award of the evening, earning Best Defensive Player.

Woods, who led the defensive for the Lady Warriors, took home her third award of the evening, garnering the coveted Coach’s award. Coach Cook said, “This is one of the most important awards that can be given to an athlete, in my opinion. It represents the player who is the most dedicated, inspiring to other teammates, respectful and helpful to the coach and has a wonderful attitude.” Cook went on to say that Woods was a tremendous help with giving direction to the team and assisting her with many of the teams duties.

Freshman Brittany Hull captured the Gatorade Rookie of the Year award and junior Ashten Cisneros went home with the Will to Win award. Cook said that Hull was very instrumental in the success of the team this year. “Brittany didn’t know what a goalie stick looked like in January and now she is one of the top goalies in San Diego and she has three years left to do nothing but improve her game. When it’s all said and done, this young lady is going to really turn some heads,” commented Cook. Cook added that she is only losing two seniors and next year is going to be a very strong year in terms of having very experienced players on her team.
