Why doesn't Horn oppose the landfill?

In reading your Village News 10/13 edition article entitled “Judge dumps on landfill developer” by Ron Jonason, I would like to express my thanks for your printing this informative article.

Judge Anello identified serious flaws in the final environmental impact report (FEIR) that had been certified by the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health. As a result of this ruling, the landfill approval process may have been halted and we may be able to avoid having a landfill near the San Luis Rey aquifer.

Most notable in this same article is a quote from County Board of Supervisors Pam Slater (District #3) in which she said that she was “surprised that the county found that EIR adequate because I don’t… I cannot imagine the Board of Supervisors on any other project being willing to buy off on that kind of document.”

If a County Supervisor from District #3 (not our own 5th District) feels such opposition to the Gregory Canyon landfill on environmental issues, why doesn’t our own 5th District Supervisor, Bill Horn, demonstrate similar concern for the public good and oppose this landfill? Mr. Horn (through his staff) declined to comment at this time. This is not the attitude we need in our District Supervisor — we need assistance, not keeping out of the issue!

In contrast, 5th District Supervisor candidate Bruce Thompson has termed the Judge Anello decision a step in the right direction and commented that “the dump would be located near an earthquake fault, which could rupture the lining and allow seepage into the underground aquifer… it’s something we’ve been saying for years; that the dump is dangerous for the environment…”

A lack of strong defense of the environment and water supply on this issue by Supervisor Horn is likely to lose voters in the upcoming election, and I will be one of those who will be switching my support and voting for Bruce Thompson for 5th District Supervisor.
