FALLBROOK — Mrs. Cynthia Oshiro, who has played chess since she was in high school, loves the game and is the sponsor of the Potter Junior High Chess Club, whose 40 members meet in her classroom each day during lunch period. The club is open to all students. The members, from different classes, grades and backgrounds, eat as they play the game that develops thinking, planning, strategy, logic and problem-solving skills. Mrs. Oshiro, who has been teaching for 20 years, says, “The Potter kids are more enthusiastic, polite and fun than at any place I’ve been.” She also said, “The Fallbrook community is fabulous, the people are friendly and the scenery gorgeous. I really enjoy teaching here.”
The Potter Chess Club has been active for many years. A single elimination tournament is held in November and in February they hold a friendship tournament (everyone plays everyone) and no one is eliminated. The student with the most wins receives a prize.
The Fallbrook Vintage Car Club members are proud to support the Potter Chess Club and numerous other youth activities in our community.
The car club meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club. They invite anyone with an interest in vintage automobiles to join them.
