Historic iron pour Nov. 5 at Foundry & Art Studios of Fallbrook

FALLBROOK — Since the dawn of the Iron Age, “cupola” casting of the metal has been used to render various utilitarian and artistically crafted forms in iron. From manhole covers to decorative panels, engine blocks to sculpture, the process of cupola iron casting rivets the attention of the casual observer as well as the artist/craftsperson. It is our privilege to host this remarkable process in a one-night pour, which may last for hours, at the Foundry & Art Studios of Fallbrook, headed by Master of Fine Arts Toby Flores, sculptor and instructor at San Diego State University.

Persons who have built sand molds in the October workshops will be welcome to participate in this spectacular event, which will include a number of artists from Southern California. Don’t miss an opportunity to see history come alive! (Molds by participants cast inexpensively on a “per mold” basis.)

The iron pour will be an exciting event where artists from across the west come together to watch the night ‘light up.’ People are invited to bring chairs, blankets, libations, favorite BBQ food (grills and charcoal provided) and a potluck item to share.

There will be no charge to watch, but for a small fee you can bring a mold of your own to fill with molten iron or join a mold-making workshop.

The Art Studios of Fallbrook will be hosting an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. on the same day showcasing programs like ceramics, printmaking and painting. We will be serving coffee and sweet treats.
