Attacking our children: ACLU urges the rejection of abstinence only programs

One of the apocryphal lines from the Vietnam War was: “We must destroy the village in order to save it.” This seems to be the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) approach to helping our nation’s children.

The ACLU recently began urging officials across America to reject abstinence-only sex education programs.

Abstinence education is vital to reducing out-of-wedlock childbearing, preventing sexually transmitted diseases, and improving the emotional and physical wellbeing of young people. In fact, these programs help youth develop an understanding of personal commitment, relationship fidelity and emotional intimacy - the foundations of any healthy marriage.

The ACLU claims that abstinence-only sex education has not proven effective in reducing sexual activity among the nation’s youth.

But, the ACLU forgot to do its homework.

There are ten recent scientific evaluations, outlined by the Heritage Foundation, that demonstrate the effectiveness of abstinence-only programs in positively modifying sexual behavior.

Question: Why would the ACLU ignore such facts? Answer: The ACLU has an agenda other than the one it purports.

As parents, we cannot allow the ACLU’s deliberate distortions to influence public policy-making. Policy should be made within a context of truth and honesty.

I encourage you to check out the Heritage Foundation’s website at http://www.heritage.org for more information about the effectiveness of abstinence-only sex education programs and what you can do to protect them.
