Youngrens have the gold

FALLBROOK — Beverly and Bob Youngren just returned from St. George, UT, where they competed in the 19th Annual Huntsman World Senior Games. The Games started in 1987 with around 500 athletes. This year it featured over 9,000 participants from 52 countries. This is the fourth year the Youngrens have competed and are so impressed with how this community welcomes all athletes. The oldest competitor was 105 years old — track and field was his venue. There were 10 athletes in their 90s. One 92-year-young lady broke her age record for the javelin throw plus she also competed in the shotput. Bev and Bob said there’s nothing more inspirational to them than participating in these Games. They relish their wins in Pickleball! They were undefeated in Mixed Doubles and won a gold medal. Bob won silver for Men’s Doubles. Bev won silver for singles and bronze for Women’s Doubles.

What is Pickleball? It’s the fastest growing sport in the Senior Olympics (but not only for seniors) played with a solid paddle and special Whiffle ball. The creator’s dog was called Pickle. It is very similar to tennis except underhand serving. It’s a fast-paced game on a smaller-size court — less impact on you if you have had knee/rotator cups injuries or arthritis issues. They now have courts marked at San Luis Rey Tennis Club. Come join them!

If you would like additional info or want to learn the game, contact the Youngrens at [email protected]. It’s a dilly of a game!
