Guac Girls go 3-0-3 at Field Hockey Festival

The Guac Girls, Fallbrook’s field hockey team that played in the National Field Hockey Festival in Florida during Thanksgiving Weekend, finished the tournament with three wins, no losses and three ties.

“[The] girls played well and we were very competitive,” said coach Kathy Waite.

The Guac Girls consist of 16 players from the Fallbrook High School varsity team. Because the tournament takes place after the end of the CIF field hockey season, the team did not officially represent Fallbrook High School. Without the ability to call themselves the Warriors, the team has adopted the name Guac Girls. Although past Guac Girls teams have included Fallbrook junior varsity players and a handful of players from other schools, this year’s team consisted only of 2005 Fallbrook varsity players.

“I carried such a large squad,” Waite noted.

That eliminated the need to include junior varsity players on the Guac Girls team. “It’s such a jump for JV players unless they’re mentally prepared,” Waite said.

The high school pools were divided into Pools A through T, with A being the toughest competition and T being the lowest level of competition. Fallbrook was placed in Pool L.

The tournament was played November 24-26 in various Florida cities. “Thankfully the weather was good in Florida, but we did see a lot of hurricane damage where we were,” Waite noted.

The Guac Girls played teams from Connecticut and Kentucky on November 24, from Pennsylvania and Delaware on November 25 and from New York and Colorado on November 26.

Unlike CIF play, where a “strokes” series of penalty shots determines a winner if the score is tied, the National Field Hockey Festival has no tiebreakers after regulation. The Guac Girls finished second in their pool and missed winning their pool by one goal.
