Peters appointed to MRCD board

Michael Peters was appointed to the board of the Mission Resource Conservation District.

A 5-0 San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote December 13 placed Peters, who lives on Marianne Lane in Fallbrook, on the Mission RCD board. Peters replaces Shogo Yamaguchi on the board.

“I’m happy to serve and do my part and help conservation in the Fallbrook area,” Peters said.

Peters was born in San Diego and grew up in the Allied Gardens area of San Diego. He moved from Vista to Fallbrook 17 years ago. He currently works as the preserve manager for the Fallbrook Land Conservancy.

“I work pretty closely with the conservationists at Mission Resource, and we come up with a lot of projects that will help restore habitat,” Peters said.

Resource conservation districts, which are formed to control water runoff and prevent soil erosion, were originally created to focus on agricultural use of land but now involve themselves in watershed management, recreational area management, urban and agricultural irrigation and water use, water quality, forest land productivity and public education.

Peters’ work for the Fallbrook Land Conservancy includes erosion control, trail work, removal of invasive plant species, baseline reports, working with the state’s Department of Fish and Game and working on applications for Federal grants. “I get a little bit of everything,” he said.

His most recent project for the conservancy focuses on diverting water off the Monserate Mountain trails.

Judy Mitchell, the executive director of the Mission RCD, asked Peters if he would be interested in serving on the board. Peters accepted the offer. He notes that his goals include keeping good conservation practices, implementing new conservation practices, teaching growers and homeowners about the difference between native and invasive plants and water quality issues. “Just doing good conservation work and getting people involved in it and to do it the right way,” he said.
