Gregory J. Smith, 55, announced Jan. 9 that he intends to seek re-election for County Assessor, Recorder, County Clerk in the June 6 election. Smith states that his extensive 30-year background and experience in local government, combined with his many accomplishments in office, will insure continued sound management and high professional standards for the office.
The Assessor/Recorder/Clerk’s office assesses all property in the county for tax purposes and maintains all property records, as well as birth, death, marriage and fictitious business names.
Greg Smith has been the County Assessor since 1983 and prior to that was the Assistant Assessor. In 1994 Greg was appointed the Recorder/Clerk for the County of San Diego and assumed these responsibilities in addition to his duties as County Assessor. He has been with the County of San Diego since 1977. Prior to that, he worked for the cities of Chula Vista and Sausalito.
“Customer service has always been and continues to be my number one priority,” Smith pledged in announcing his re-election bid. “I respectfully request the voters of San Diego County to re-elect me so that I can continue to improve and modernize the office and make it even more responsive to the public.”
Smith’s office has received over 30 Awards for Excellence from the National Association of Counties, and he continues this innovation. The Assessor’s office was the first county department to offer items for sale over the Internet using e-commerce at their extensive Web site, http://www.SDARCC.com. In addition, the office was the first in the state to offer Web broadcasts of marriage ceremonies called “Weddings on the Web.”
There are four branch offices to serve the public, including the Kearny Mesa office, which is now open six days a week including Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for marriage licenses, ceremonies and birth certificates. The centrally located Kearny Mesa office is also shared with the State Board of Equalization for the convenience of local business owners.
