FALLBROOK — Advance planning for the annual 2007 Friends of the Fallbrook Library (FOFL) Community Read is underway, announces Jerri Patchett, president of the organization. The Community Read, held in April, features a variety of coordinated events using the central theme of the book selected for reading during the period. This year it culminates on April 27 to coincide with the FOFL annual meeting of its membership.
“First up is choosing a book,” says Marlo Miller, FOFL board member chair of the program committee. This year the three that made the cut so far are nonfiction, but notable in their wide appeal and readability.
Under consideration are: “The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century,” an in-depth look at the world today through the eyes of author Thomas L. Friedman; “My Life in France” by Julia Child with Alex Prud’homme, which recounts the career of the famous chef; and “A Year in the World” by Frances Mayes, who tells of her European travel adventures.
“We would like to hear from the community if there are any other books we should consider,” Miller says. Committee members include Pat Rogondino, Joann Chartier, Anne Burdick and Peggy Kesterson. Four more members will be added.
The book chosen for the community read must have components that lend themselves to promotion in other areas. For example, this year’s fiction choice, “California Girl” by T. Jefferson Parker, resulted in an art exhibit at The Art Center, book displays in local booksellers and at retailers, etc. The final decision will be made by September.
