In the 1970s when wine laws were so strict in Italy, there was a winemaking revolution and the traditional Italian Sangiovese grape used for Chianti was blended with French grapes Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot instead of traditional Italian white grapes. This created a rich, bold wine and, as one could imagine, caused quite a stir.
