BONSALL — To recognize the Bonsall and Fallbrook Sheriff’s deputies, reserves, office staff and senior volunteers for their excellent service and dedication to the community, the Bonsall Chamber of Commerce sponsored the seventh annual Sheriff’s Appreciation Day at the September 14 Sundowner. Held in the River Village Shopping Center, the event included a barbeque dinner and presentation of awards. A free Jack-in-the-Box gift card was presented to all Sheriff’s personnel and their families in attendance courtesy of the Bonsall Chamber and David Beshay, owner of the Bonsall and Fallbrook Jack-in-the-Box restaurants.
This Sundowner was hosted by ABS Copy Center (owners Jim and Rebecca Eastom) and Countrywide Home Loans (Tony Flores), who barbequed hamburgers and hot dogs and served chili beans, salad and dessert for over 100 guests.
Ten individuals were honored for their service:
Detective Theresa Adams-Hydar: A Deputy Sheriff for 12 years, assigned as a detective at the Sheriff’s Fallbrook Substation for the last two years. Adams-Hydar has distinguished herself during the past year for her tenacious investigative resolve to identify and then put those persons involved in criminal activity into jail. During the past year, Theresa was commended by the District Attorney for solving over 50 residential burglaries, which resulted in the recovery of over $750,000 in stolen property.
Deputy Sheriff Gary “Mick” Crowley: A team player who readily assists his beat partners — a hard worker and self-starter. Recently Deputy Crowley saw “gang” graffiti spray painted on several businesses in downtown Fallbrook. He promptly photographed and documented the incidents and subsequently followed up with the victims. Deputy Crowley photographed, documented and cross-referenced eight incidents of this spray paint graffiti type vandalism. His dedication and initiative resulted in the identification and subsequent arrest of these subjects for vandalism by the gang investigators.
Deputy Sheriff Jeff Schmidt: Has consistently performed his duties with a level of dedication and tenacity that has been exemplary, earning him the respect and admiration of his partners and supervisors. Last year, Deputy Schmidt volunteered to become part of the Sheriff’s K-9 program, and he has combined his superior patrol skills with his new role as a dog handler to become a real “difference maker” for the Fallbrook and Bonsall communities. Since he started working with his K-9 partner, Alto, Deputy Schmidt has been directly responsible for the apprehension of numerous felony suspects involved in crimes such as auto theft, burglary, domestic violence and felony assault. This has resulted in a noted reduction of such crimes throughout the Fallbrook/Bonsall area.
Deputy Sheriff Ron Brown: A 19-year veteran of the department, Deputy Brown has worked the Fallbrook/Bonsall area for over five years. He demonstrates his maturity and dedication to his duties to the citizens of the community on a daily basis in the way he conducts business. Most recently, his efforts were instrumental in assisting in the investigation of a residential burglary ring that culminated in the arrest of several suspects, which has had a dramatic effect on property crimes in the community.
Reserve Deputy Sheriff Ronald J. Ceyba: Has been the mainstay of the Reserve Unit for five years. He is an Honorably Retired Pennsylvania State Trooper whose prior law enforcement background and experience has greatly contributed to the ability of the unit to respond to a wide range of assigned missions. He has worked in excess of 200 uncompensated, uniformed patrol hours in the Bonsall/Fallbrook area. Reserve Deputy Ceyba is a most worthy recipient of this Distinguished Law Enforcement Service Award.
Marlena Vick, Sheriff’s Professional Office Staff: Marlena Vick has been with the County of San Diego for a total of 28 years. Mrs. Vick worked 13 of those years with the Sheriff’s Department as a member of the Professional Staff. Other work assignments have been with the District Attorney’s Office and Planning and Land Use. Mrs. Vick demonstrates exceptional job skills in her required duties. Her position requires that she retain an overwhelming amount of in-depth knowledge to operate in her capacity.
Bob Cebulski, Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol: Joined the Senior Volunteer Patrol one year ago and has accumulated about 400 hours of volunteer service. Bob is the “go to” guy anytime there is a computer problem that needs resolution. He quickly and expertly devised a process for the downloading of digital photographs, depicting either graffiti or illegal parkers in handicap spaces. This enabled all volunteers to have quick access. He also designed and implemented the process for data-gathering for the compilation of monthly and yearly reports. And finally, he volunteered to compile the monthly volunteer work schedule.
Mary Gallina, Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol: Joined the Senior Volunteer Patrol two years ago and has quickly accumulated over 700 hours of volunteer service. In addition to patrol duties she has volunteered to become the Office Manager. She gathers and compiles all the patrol data required for the generation of monthly and yearly reports. Her foresight and willingness to do this extra work has created a welcome efficiency in the entire process. She provides feedback to those citizens who use the vacation check program. She also volunteers for numerous extra community events.
Leslie Sinagub, Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol: Joined the Senior Volunteer Patrol two years ago and has accumulated over 500 hours of volunteer service. Leslie works fulltime but still makes time every week for a scheduled patrol and for the extra community events. Leslie is a highly motivated, focused, self-starting individual. She can be relied upon for the superb completion of any task regardless of its complexity and is a true leader.
George Waibel, Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer: Has been a volunteer for over ten years and has accumulated a staggering 3,400 hours of volunteer service. He initially started out with the Senior Patrol and as maturity caught up with him, he elected to become the resident expert at the Fallbrook Sheriff’s Station front counter. George is an invaluable resource who cheerfully meets and greets the public, is able to quickly arrive at the basis for the citizen’s concerns and present a suitable solution. His presence at the front counter has relieved the professional staff of this workload.
