FALLBROOK — Mary Villegas, Wendy Salyers and Darcie Gibson have something in common: their passion for volleyball. That passion has driven them each to coach the sports they love; Villegas coaches St. Peter’s Catholic junior varsity girls volleyball team, Salyers coaches La Paloma’s girls volleyball team and Darcie Gibson coaches Zion Lutheran’s girls volleyball team.
Despite the fact that these schools compete in different leagues, the coaches decided it would be a good opportunity for the girls to practice their volleyball skills and gain playing experience in regular scrimmages together.
On October 11, the St. Peter’s team met with La Paloma’s team at lunchtime on the St. Peter’s volleyball court. The weather was perfect and both teams showed incredible spirit and sportsmanship. The teams played two strong games, the final scores giving wins to St. Peter’s: 25-19 and 25-20.
October 23 proved to be another great day for volleyball. St. Peter’s met in Zion Lutheran’s gym for an after-school scrimmage. Again, both schools showed great strength and sportsmanship. Zion’s gym truly rocked with spectator spirit. The final tally for the afternoon was three wins for St. Peter’s.
The teams coached by Villegas, Salyers and Gibson have all gained valuable playing experience through this opportunity of extra scrimmages. This will give them an extra edge as they play through their volleyball seasons, which are well underway. Good luck to all!
