On Wednesday, March 28, the Fallbrook varsity baseball team had not solved the number-one team issue in San Diego County yet, but the Warriors were getting closer and had one more opportunity on Tuesday, April 3, to beat the Rancho Bernardo Broncos in the 57th Annual Lion’s Tournament.
On March 28, at Rancho Bernardo, the afternoon sun played havoc with the Warrior outfielders and the 16 hoppers found holes through the infielders. After throwing five innings on the mound, Shawn Sanford decided to take matters into his own hands and drilled a two-run homerun to right field to cut the lead in half. After Tim Coleman hurled a scoreless sixth inning, the Fallbrook faithful had reason to believe another late-inning rally would pull the Warriors through. But it was not to be.
With one out and runners on first and second, the Bronco shortstop dived to snare Kevin Vandivort’s line drive and doubled Monday’s hero Justin Hargrove off of second base to end the game.
The loss evened the Warriors’ record at 5-5 on the season.
