How many people know what to do if they have a fire in their kitchen? The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection offers everyone these tips on kitchen fire safety. If a pot or pan catches fire, it should be covered with a lid, and the burner turned off. In case of an oven fire, the oven door should be closed and the heat turned off. For a microwave oven fire, the door should be kept closed and the stop button pushed. A fire extinguisher should be kept in or near the kitchen. A class “ABC” extinguisher that’s labeled by a testing laboratory is best. Everyone should be fire safe, not sorry!
