At times we ask ourselves what we truly believe. Does God truly hear our prayers? Does he send comfort in our time of need? I was questioning all of the above as my life irreversibly changed becoming a widow and sole support of my little seven-year-old son who looked up to me for security when my safety net was also abruptly taken away.
At the time we lived on nearly two acres butted up against a ravine. The entire westerly vista of our house was glass which made it a haven for sunsets but left me feeling vulnerable and sleepless. I’d lie awake imagining every noise was a perpetrator. It was then my practice, as is today, to ask God to send his angels to protect us.
One such night I had dozed off for a short period and awoke at 2am to wrestle another sleepless night to the ground. As I wandered down the hall to retrieve a glass of milk, the epitome of my fears dropped me to my knees when I saw a stranger on my well-lit back porch. I had no phone extension in my side of the house and would have to run through the glassed living room to the kitchen to call the police. Composing myself on my knees in the hallway, I peeked around the corner. The sight was more curious than my first reality. The stranger was huge, towering around seven feet and transparent like a huge ice sculpture. I stared at the sight which appeared to be staring back at me. Eventually, I got to my feet and walked slowly to the window. It was then that I saw his enormous sword drawn, his Roman soldier garb and huge wing span. As I walked back and forth in front of the window his head followed me. My intuition was to let him do his job and I could sleep safely from now on. I also knew God answered my prayer, and I had nothing to fear.
There are over 300 references about angels in the Bible. Here’s what Billy Graham has to say about these heavenly messengers: “I believe in angels because the Bible says there are angels; and I believe the Bible to be the true Word of God. I also believe in angels because I have sensed their presence in my life on special occasions. Millions of angels are at God’s command and at our service. The hosts of heaven stand at attention as we make our way from earth to glory. And Satan’s BB guns are no match for God’s heavy artillery. Don’t be afraid. God is for you. He has committed His angles to wage war in the conflict of the ages – and they will win the victory.”
“He will give his angels charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11)
