A fatal vehicle accident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, August 16, on Gird Road and Via Loma. The victim, 38-year-old Vista resident Senobio Aguirre, was driving his 1993 Ford Explorer eastbound on Via Loma and was west of Gird. The CalTrans county investigator revealed that Aguirre was driving 25 to 30 miles per hour at the time of the accident.
UPS employee Jesus Nunez, a 36-year-old resident of San Marcos, was driving a 2003 company truck, heading south on Gird just north of Via Loma at approximately 45 miles per hour right before the collision.
“For unknown reasons, Aguirre was coming down Via Loma and failed to stop at the stop sign. [He] took the turn without slowing down onto Gird heading northbound,” said Eric Newbury, Public Affairs Officer.
When Aguirre drove onto Gird Road, he collided with Nunez.
“The truck driver said he never saw <Aguirre> and never had a chance to react,” said Newbury. Nunez broadsided the Explorer and flipped it on its right side.
Aguirre, the sole occupant of his vehicle, sustained fatal injuries due to the collision and died at the scene. “It took a while to extricate him. There was major damage,” said Newbury.
The intersection of Gird and Via Loma was closed for four hours to execute a county investigation.
Nunez sustained minor injuries.
