Learn how to evacuate large animals

Pet owners who remember October 2003 might wonder if they prepared for the next wildfire. Do they know who will assist their horses and other animals during an emergency? What if their area is being evacuated and they’re not home but their animals are? What if there are roadblocks and they can’t get through? Who can?

San Diego Animal Services and San Diego Humane Society will discuss these and other issues at a seminar for large animal owners on Wednesday, October 3, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hidden Meadows Pavilion.

Large animal owners will learn about the Humane Society’s Animal Rescue Reserve (ARR). ARR is a team of highly trained volunteers dedicated to assisting people during disasters by safely evacuating horses, livestock and household pets. They can learn how to prepare their animals, themselves and their property for the next wildfire.

To reserve a space at the seminar and a free 30-page booklet, “What to Do with My Horse During a Fire,” call Georgia Herman at (760) 855-1641.

This is a program of the Deer Springs Fire Safe Council. For more information visit http://www.deerspringsfiresafecouncil.com.

The county’s 24-Hour Animal Rescue Hotline is (619) 299-0871.
