An excellent letter by Mike Thielk of Fallbrook (March 6, 2008) spelled out in great clarity the little known fact that the vast US population is unknowingly serving as surrogates to the State of Israel!
We all felt great sorrow for the European Jews for their treatment by Nazi Germany in the ’30s and ’40s. So much so that the goodhearted US took the lead in pushing through the UN the measures leading to the establishment of a Jewish homeland in the area populated by Palestinians, Jews and a few other minorities.
One can question if this was a wise decision, given the problems which have ensued since. Nevertheless, it was done – and the world must learn to live with it.
What wasn’t anticipated, however, was the establishment of Jewish settlements in lands taken by force from the Palestinians as a result of the Arabs’ ill-conceived series of wars against Israel.
There has never been a good-faith effort by Israel to acknowledge the rights of the misplaced Palestinians to return to Israel and to the settlements to lay claim to the lands and property which is rightfully theirs.
I can understand the Jewish Americans being in favor of US favoritism toward Israel, but what of the rest of us who blissfully stand by while it happens? Shame on us!
