In the first week of Avocado League play, Fallbrook High School’s boys’ water polo team won all three of its league matches.
“We’re off to a good start,” said Fallbrook coach Bob Lamont.
Fallbrook’s league opener took place October 6 at home against San Pasqual. The Warriors earned a 17-6 victory against the Golden Eagles.
Fallbrook led San Pasqual 5-0 at the end of the first period which saw Jacob Pril score two goals and Kevin Reichel, Alec Carpenter, and Kort Heyneman each put one ball into the net.
“The balanced attack was good to see from the coach’s perspective,” Lamont said.
Pril ended the game with eight goals. Pril, Heyneman, and Zack Meyer each had six steals. “Good defense across the board,” Lamont said.
The Avocado League openers also included Escondido taking a 10-9 victory over 2008 league champion Torrey Pines at the Falcons’ home pool. Escondido was Fallbrook’s next opponent.
“We were pretty psyched for that game,” Lamont said. “We knew that was going to be a good team, and we’d better take them seriously.”
The October 8 match in Fallbrook saw the Warriors take a 6-4 lead at the end of the first period. Pril and Carpenter each scored two goals while Reichel and Luke Jones had one goal apiece.
“We had a balanced attack and they were getting good production from their two big guns, [Cooper] Ness and [Kevin] Dunn,” Lamont said.
Ness and Dunn each scored twice in the first period. The Warriors had a 9-6 halftime lead before taking a 14-8 lead by the end of the third period.
“We opened it up,” Lamont said.
Fallbrook’s five third-period goals were scored by four different players. Pril scored twice while Reichel, Heyneman, and Mike Maryn added single goals.
“That was a good result for us. We’ve had trouble in the third,” Lamont said of the Warriors’ performance during the quarter.
The game concluded with a 16-9 Fallbrook victory.
San Pasqual plays its home games at Jim Stone Pool in Escondido, and Fallbrook’s first league road game was against the Golden Eagles on October 9.
The Warriors led 16-3 at halftime and returned home with another 17-6 victory over San Pasqual.
“The team played with intensity throughout the week,” Lamont said.
The three wins to start the league season gave Fallbrook a 12-5 overall record.
