FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Village Rotary awarded a $1,000 grant last month to Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green (KFCG) for the continuing operation of its household battery recycling program. The donation will enable KFCG to recycle almost one ton of batteries. That translates into one less ton of materials in local landfills and, even more importantly, one less ton of hazardous chemicals that can seep into the soil and groundwater supplies.
The Fallbrook Village Rotary has also recently established a partnership with KFCG for the transportation of the batteries from the downtown collection locations at Major Market and Albertson’s to the storage drums at the Fallbrook Public Utility District.
State law prohibits the disposal of household batteries into landfills and trash collection operations, but no public funding has been established to recycle the batteries. KFCG operates the only community program in San Diego County for such recycling and relies on grants and charitable donations to fund the process. To date, KFCG has recycled over 10 tons of household batteries.
