The Guac Girls indoor field hockey team consisting of Fallbrook High School sophomores and juniors reached the North County Indoor League finals before a loss in the championship game to an all-star team that included three Fallbrook High School seniors.
“The girls played a very hard game and matched up against an all-star senior team. They did great,” said Guac Girls coach Kathy Waite. “I can’t complain at all. They played fine. They played hard; they played to the end, and they did their best.”
The team cannot officially represent Fallbrook High School outside of the CIF field hockey season, and without the ability to call themselves the Warriors the team has adopted the name Guac Girls for tournaments and other play. Waite coaches both the Guac Girls and the Fallbrook High School varsity field hockey team.
Because the North County Indoor League is used as a tool to prepare players for the subsequent CIF field hockey season, school-based teams do not include seniors. This year an all-star team called “Past Their Prime” included Fallbrook seniors Kyle Little, Melissa Maultsby, and Christine Russell as well as players from San Pasqual, Scripps Ranch and Serra High Schools.
One of San Pasqual’s seniors on Past Their Prime was CIF player of the year Mallory Albini, whose next official scholastic team will be the University of Michigan. “She’s just awesome. She played great,” Waite said of Albini.
Including the championship loss, the Guac Girls finished the North County Indoor League with a 6-2 record. Their only other loss, in the final regular-season game, was also to Past Their Prime.
