FALLBROOK – Trails & Rails will perform at Fallbrook Woman’s Club on Saturday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. sponsored by Fallbrook Americana Music Series. The group is one of San Diego’s leading western bands performing at many Local Events including a recent library series that focuses on songs of the ‘30s. They also have consistent gigs in the Tucson and Albuquerque areas. Lead members are Walt Richards and Paula Strong.
After multiple wins at the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle contest in the 60s, Richards did national tours with the Eddystone Singer and the Appalachians. Tiring of life on the road, he returned to San Diego and began teaching banjo and guitar, a career lasting 40 years. He teaches at Old Time Music in North Park.
Strong’s musical career might be said to have started when she was six and singing White Christmas in a program mounted by her dad, the band teacher. Her interest in music never waned. Her taste is eclectic covering the gamut of many styles but swing and western with a special affection for cowboy and train songs run front and center. Now she favors guitar but not long ago she could be seen backing a swing dance band on drums.
Trails and Rails also features Ken Wilcox on guitar and auto harp and Pete Varhola on bass. Tickets are sold at Major Market and the door. Call (760) 723-7255 or go to http://www.trailsandrails.net for more information.
