Governor Schwarzenegger,
On behalf of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors and the mayors of 16 cities across the San Diego region who recently sent a letter to you requesting additional firefighting resources, I wish to extend our sincere appreciation for the Executive Order S-07-10, which mobilizes the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) to secure and deploy additional resources and personnel necessary to save lives and protect homes statewide from wildfires.
Increased fuel loads from this winter’s rains and the devastating effect of the Gold Spotted Oak Borer on San Diego County’s oak tree population will almost certainly increase the chances of catastrophic wildfire as we move into the hottest and driest part of the year. Adding an additional firefighter to each Cal Fire engine, and making additional aerial and ground resources available will greatly increase Cal Fire’s chances of knocking down fires before they burn out of control.
We believe you have made a wise investment in the safety of our region. We appreciate your dedication to protecting lives, property, and the environment in the San Diego County region and thank you again for issuing Executive Order S-07-10.
Sincerely,
Bill Horn
Vice Chairman
Supervisor, Fifth District
County of San Diego
