At the June 9 board meeting, the board of directors of the Fallbrook Healthcare District was faced with the difficult task of cutting the monetary amount of grants from the fiscal budget for the 2010-2011 year from $694,000 to $500,000.
The directors reviewed and discussed each grant application and deliberated to see how much each of the 14 applicants seeking grant money would receive from the district.
According to Vi Dupre, administrator for the Fallbrook Healthcare District, the board of directors determined at their May 10 general meeting that the amount allocated for the 2010-2011 year would be limited to $500,000.
“The Fallbrook Healthcare District has been hit with reduction in revenue, as has every special district in the state,” said Dupre. “The amount requested is beyond that limit. The task before the board is assuredly a difficult one.”
During the meeting, the board agreed to the following disbursements:
• Cal State San Marcos – School of Nursing: a modified grant of $5,000, a drop from the $10,000 requested
• Fallbrook Family Health Center – Behavioral health: a modified grant of $74,000, a drop from the $80,000 requested
• Fallbrook Family Health Center – Uncompensated care: a modified grant of $74,000, a drop from the $80,000 requested
• Fallbrook Food Pantry: a modified grant of $60,000, a drop from the $80,000 requested
• Fallbrook Smiles – Dental: a modified grant of $9,000, a drop from the $12,000 requested
• Fallbrook Smiles – Diabetes: a modified grant of $45,000, a drop from the $50,000 requested
• Foundation for Senior Care – Care Van: a modified grant of $20,000, a drop from $30,000
• Foundation for Senior Care – Senior Advocate program: a grant of $45,000, meeting the requested amount
• North County CERT: a modified grant of $7,500, a drop from the $15,000 requested
• North County Disabled Services: a modified grant of $5,000, a drop from the $10,000 requested
• NICPP – Youth Advocacy Program: a modified grant of $15,000, a drop from the $26,500 requested
• Palomar Family Counseling Services: a modified grant of $60,000, a drop from the $73,124 requested
• REINS – OTPT program: a modified grant of $35,000, a drop from the $130,750 requested
• Think First: a grant of $11,800, meeting the requested amount.
The grant disbursements totaled $466,300 after the modifications. It was decided that if additional funds were needed, board would distribute some of the Health Fair’s budget for the upcoming year.
“This is not fun to do,” said board president Milt Davies, in response to the cuts. “I feel like King Solomon with the baby and the sword. We just hope that [the nonprofits] will be able to perform to the same level of quality that we have expected from them with what they have been given.”
